not fast for me

Sonnet products have always been a bit expensive, but usually reliable. I've trusted them for over a decade. This product may be better than the competition but it doesn't perform as I expected.

It is a tight fit in the MacBook Pro, as some have noticed, but I've had no difficulty inserting/removing it or the card inside it. Gentle pressure with a fingernail in the right spot is all that's necessary on my unit. Of course the card (64GB SDXC in mine) has to be ejected from the Mac Finder before physically removing it- that may be the cause for some people having problems with crashes.

Speed has not lived up to the hype or the vague comments from reviewers. My Mac has a very fast processor and internal SSD as well as the latest OS software, so reading/writing to this unit should be extremely fast. I did extensive testing and found these actual facts:

Read speed averaged 44.45MB/s. Write speed 13.55MB/s. This was using a single file of 5GB. The same test on an old iMac with only USB2 got faster speeds. Has anyone else actually tested the speed?

From reading the reviews and frustrations of this and other products of this type, I'm happy that it works and is trouble free. The speed is disappointing. Perhaps I will find better driver software to make it faster. What do you suggest?

One Speedy Card!

Works great and I love that it stays recessed entirely inside the Express Card Slot. Yea, a little tricky to get out - but not bad. Express Cards tend to not stay in as well as the old PCMCIA cards did - so if they protrude out - it's easy to knock them loose. If you happen to be reading/writing at that time it can create all kinds of problems. I leave this inserted 24/7/365 now and never have a problem.

In addition, I find that It's very fast - much better than other readers I've tried with high speed SD cards. Amazing how much more quickly you can copy off the images stored on a 64GB card with this product!

This does not work on a Mac out of the box. You need to go to their website and install the drivers. Probably ditto PC but didn't try. The website is easily navigable and finding the drivers is straightforward. Post-install and reboot it worked just fine, very quick. Ejection mechanism for the SD cards could be better, but it's no biggie. If you are buying this, I'd guess that you need to move a lot of data, and this card will do that quickly.

An Ad Hoc SSD

I bought this unit to utilize the unused slot in my Lenovo laptop. it is really made for the mac but it fits almost flush in my Expresscard slot. With its ability to read high capacity SDs and Micro SDs, it makes a handy removable ad hoc SSD. Works great with the Portable Apps Suite though I don't boot off it.

Apple certified tech on a 2011 17" Macbook Pro, running 10.9.4.

Performance: 5 times slower than my 5 year old CF/FW800 reader (Using a Class 10 Sony SD card)

Ergonomics: HORRIBLE, you can't insert/remove an SD card without long fingernails or tweezers

Drivers: MASSIVELY UNSTABLE. If you so much as jostle the adapter, it will KERNEL PANIC your machine. I'm not talking about accidentally ejecting the ExpessCard, I mean just touching the edge trying to get your SD card out (which, as mentioned above is hard to do without tweezers or long fingernails.) To say nothing of oddly failing file transfers and other erratic behavior.

Save your money, don't touch this thing with a 10 foot pole.
