The hardware modules seem fine. It's trivial to wire into a non-grounded extension cord. It's the application and integration setup where things fall apart.
I've been working with 'home automation' devices since the late 1980s, including old X-10 modules. I have deep, extensive experience with PCs and networks, and used to design and install instruments used in underground nuclear test environments. Home automation is not a big deal with me.
I bought into the Amazon Alexa ecosystem some time ago and was very happy to see controller modules take price plunges, becoming readily affordable. I thought these Sonoff modules were priced about where they needed to be to bring smarthome benefits more mainstream.
A very, very big part of that includes workable controllers for the non-hobbyist. A typical homeowner doesn't want to deal with technical details--things just need to work.
So what doesn't work here? Registration with eWelink, the app, didn't work; I had to contact their tech supports just to get recognized. Response was ok, and it was essentially corrected by someone on their end authorizing my information. Ok. Now I had an app that would toggle the module. The app touts itself as being a 'universal' controller for smarthome devices. Were I making a claim like that, my app would be more polished than silver tea services in Buckingham. Certainly it wouldn't have language incongruities, drill-down menu issues and the like.
A couple of days later I returned to the setup, and my primary objective--Alexa integration with the appropriate skill. Oops. It didn't connect. Alexa complained over and over that it refused to link the account. I tried resetting my password; that failed.
I went researching, and found the vast majority of reviews were of similar issues. Enough time spent; I elected to return my modules.
There are other means to control what I wish. Although those tools are more expensive they are also far more developed, more polished. Would I purchase something like this again? Probably...but not soon, and only if I have lots of time, patience, and my expectations are minimal.
Pairing these can be a challenge though, usually requiring multiple tries, so I found some helpful hints:
HOMES WITH MORE THAN ONE WiFi ROUTER -
Switch off ALL routers except the one you wish the Sonoff module to connect to; even if you have adequate signal from your desired router, interference from others can make pairing impossible. I learned this the hard way.
IF YOU HAVE 802.11 A, 802.11 AC, or 802.11 ACS ROUTERS -
Be sure your mobile device is connected to your 2.4 GHz link, not your 5 GHz link; this device uses the 2.4 GHz band with 802.11 b, 802.11 g, or 802.11 n wireless protocols and cannot communicate over a 5-GHz connection. I learned this the hard way also.
These devices are hackable, using the ESP 8266 SOC, they can be re-flashed to use MQTT which "internalizes" the devices, meaning you don't need cloud services to operate them, but you will have to set up an MQTT "broker" (Raspberry Pi does this very well) to use it.
Obviously, since the output of the module is a simple SPST relay contact point, it is not readily suitable for two-way switches, and bridging the contacts of a common wall switch will allow the device to connect and disconnect power as long as the wall switch is in the "off" position, but it cannot turn a light off if the wall switch is in the "on" position. This also presents a real danger, since a light socket may become "hot" without warning if the module is activated, during a bulb change, for example, even if the wall switch is in the "off" position. I have some yellow stickers that read "CAUTION: This socket is driven by an automated system and may become energized at any time", which I place near the bulbs inside the fixtures as a safety warning.
