The Sonos software, the extra components (boost, connect amp...etc.) and the necessity to have a suuuuper strong wifi signal to use all of it are only going to be worth your time if you are taking advantage of a full system. Anyone who owns just one or two play1s and is frustrated with the app and all the software updates is absolutely right, its not worth it. When, however, you are using the app to group multiple rooms and taking advantage of updates that allow you to play different media in different rooms using Alexa (just examples) the updates suddenly become less burdensome.
I also touched on this a second ago, but it is important to understand that these are not intended to be Bluetooth speakers. You HAVE to use the Sonos app to play almost everything (Spotify Connect does let you play music from the Spotify app with a paid Spotify subscription - Some other services do this as well.) This, again, is because the intended use is to be able to connect multiple rooms in your home to the system and play music throughout. It makes sense that Sonos would not be able to ensure that there would be no sync delays or lag between rooms/speakers unless the Sonos system is controlling all output. An added benefit to this is that you can compile Sonos playlists that pull songs from multiple sources - have an album saved on Spotify, but can only find that live version of your favorite song on Google play? You can build a Sonos playlist that combines it all into 1 killer tracklist.
Additionally, these are not computer speakers. <Notice the period at the end of that sentence. Just about any review, you find on Amazon from someone saying that they were hoping to use them as really nice sounding computer speakers will be a 1-star review. I think that says more about folks' lack of research than it does about the quality of the play1.
Lastly, It should be understood that within the past few years Sonos has added Alexa integration (as well as other virtual assistants) to their service. Yes, it is true that because of this update their privacy policy has changed. It amazes me to see so many reviews by people who are so worked up about "Sonos invading privacy." I mean if you have truly been living off the grid... like 0% technology in your life, then I could see how there would be some concerns that your new Hifi system is spying on you for the government. Most people, however, have a smartphone with them at all times that knows where they go, what they buy, whom they talk to and what kind of media they enjoy. These folks almost certainly had no problem agreeing to what is most likely the same type of privacy policy, just so that they can use those devices to ask siri, alexa or google assistant about the weather every day. I'm just saying, the only difference between Sonos and Apple or Google, is that Sonos makes sure that you know exactly what you are agreeing to by making it impossible to use their product without agreeing, instead of hiding the ugly parts of the policy in a 55 page update doc that they know no one is going to read. Just trying to keep things in perspective here... Anyway...
If you spent any time recently standing on a ladder running speaker wire across drop ceiling, or poking holes in walls or buying area rugs to hide your wired system's shame... or worse yet, just have bundles and strands of cords and wires all over your home, and you are finally ready to shell out for that HIFI system to end the misery and sound amazing, no-brainer... Sonos is the way to go.
If you are sitting at your computer fooling around online and your favorite song just doesn't sound quite as crisp as you would like it to, or if you have a $200 budget to fill 1 room in your house with sound, keep looking, your speaker is out there somewhere ;-)
I hope this helps, Cheers!
Their new user agreement also says they can track all my activity or if I don't accept the agreement, I don't have access to use my own speakers! I'm not sure they need that and frankly I am tired of companies saying they need to track my online activities. If there is a clear reason and they tell me before purchase, that is one thing. However, after the fact, don't change the agreement to force this kind of monitoring.
I started buying pieces of my Sonos system a while back, when there was not anything like Sonos on the market. Now I have options and will likely be buying and recommending other speakers in the future.
Pro's:
1. The streaming is flawless
2. The mobile app is amazing, the ability to combine playlists across multiple services is something I really leverage
3. Setup could not be easier, it just works
4. Multiple rooms, stereo pairing, and flexibility are highlights
5. Integration with 3rd party automation apps/smartthings
Con's
1. It's expensive
2. Sound quality is o.k. I have tried corner loading it, using it in different spaces and overall I like the sound it produces, but it's not amazing. You can get better sound quality for $200 and many other companies are catching up to Sonos in terms of connectivity and mobile.
3. No 5Ghz for connectivity to my wireless setup. (Yes they may use 5Ghz for surround functionality, but I want it on my network as I have sooo many 2.4Ghz devices already.
So it's ok, I invested already, so I'll probably pickup a play 5 and check it out. Too many negatives on the playbar and sub until the next model comes out and addresses community concerns.

But it doesn't support Amazon Music in Canada, which I didn't know and it never mentions this in the description.
And with it being compatible with Alexa, Amazon's virtual assistant, one would assume it can play Amazon Music. So now I have a good speaker that I can't use with the only paid music service I have.

The speaker sounded good, but perhaps a bit muffled, with a room entirely curtained. Ran the TRUEPLAY software, and the speaker's sound is now absolutely gorgeous! The system works well, and is very intuitive. Love it.

Wish it could integrate with my echo devices as part of an audio “group” but I understand that is more amazon than sonos.
My complaint: this thing needs a high-pass filter setting. It has terrible bass on some songs, like distorted almost unlistenable level of blah. This isn’t some dub step or something I listen to, it’s hard rock, like Korn, Faith no more, smashing pumpkins. At moderate volume it can be awful. I’ve tried the room adjustment, messed with the EQ, loudness etc etc, to get rid of the buzzy frap it ends up thin and weak sounding. Not what I expected. Don’t know if it’s a bad one, or what, but seriously considering sending it back, or relegating it to the garage or something.
-update: have no idea if it needed to be run in a bit or if it continually adapts its sound, but I gave it a while, and the frappy distorted bass has gone away, the sound is rich and full, clear, crisp. Exceptional. It was really not very good initially, but whatever happened, after a few weeks it is really good. I was a bit dismayed initially, but I’ll get more sonos products for sure.

Your phone can ring without disrupting the music at all. You can listen to a video, again without disrupting music.
Cons:
It’s not portable which I didn’t realize when purchased and is a huge downside for me.
the app is annoying. I move it around a lot and each time you have to reload the app etc and lose where you were. And then if you want to get the best sound it’s best to calibrate it but it’s a step that is not worth while for me. So I wouldn’t recommend it if you aren’t planning to keep it in one place mostly.
It’s very heavy in bass which can be good for some, but I feel bad in an apartment and wish I could adjust.
I use Apple Music and some of the functionality of it is different or is lost when using the app
It looks like the speaker wraps around for 360 sound but that’s not the case just comes out of one side.
Bottom line I see the benefits. If you are in a big house and you are keeping them in one place it’s a great machine. I use it every day without too much complaint. But to be honest I wish I bought the portable Bose, the sound is a wee bit better, more clear. I have non-portable bose hooked up to my record player and they are a great combo.
