Sonos Play:1. Mini speaker. Mighty sound.
The most compact Sonos speaker. A perfect fit for bookshelves, counters, and other snug places. Play:1 lets you enjoy great-sounding music wherever you want to listen.
Surprisingly Powerful: Play:1 sounds a lot bigger than it looks, thanks to two Class-D amplifiers and custom-built drivers, all meticulously tuned to the speaker’s unique acoustic architecture.
Trueplay Speaker Tuning: This exclusive Sonos feature fine-tunes your Play:1 to make sure you get the very best sound in any room, no matter where you place it.
Humidity Resistant: Enjoy your favorite songs in music-starved places like bathrooms and outdoor patios.
Stereo Pair With Another Play:1: Turn each speaker into separate left and right channels for wider, bigger and deeper stereo sound.
Home Theater Rears: Add a pair or Play:1 speakers to PLAYBAR and SUB for an epic surround sound experience.
Simple setup. Better over time.
Put your speaker wherever you want. Plug it in. Tap the free Sonos app – it connects to your home WiFi and you’re ready to rock.
Regular, ongoing software updates bring new features and services to your Play:1. So the longer you own it, the better it gets.
WiFi, not Bluetooth
With Sonos, the songs stream from your WiFi network (not your phone), so there's never any of the dropouts, delays or interruptions associated with Bluetooth.
One room of streaming music is great. But a house full is even better. Fill more rooms with music by simply adding more Sonos speakers. They all work together seamlessly so you can play different songs in different rooms or the same song everywhere.
'Alexa turn it up'
With an Amazon Echo and Dot, you can use your voice to play and control songs, playlists, radio stations, podcasts and more. On any Sonos speaker in any room or your home.
All the music on earth
Sonos plays everything - the most popular streaming services, on-demand Internet radio, your favorite podcasts and audiobooks, your go-to collection of downloads - whatever you love to listen to.
Access all the music on earth through the Sonos app, or control Sonos directly from the Spotify app.
One app. Complete music control.
Choose what to play, where to play it, and how loud. In one room or all over your home. Track down songs across all your music services with a single search. Create playlists in an instant. The Sonos app does it all.

So, I install the system on a newer LED tv that has a 5.1 pass through on the optical port and bam! I fall in love with THE SOUND. I get it. I'm not trying to compete with an audiophilic, perfect system nor do I care about specs as much as I do about liking what I hear. And the bottom line is that I really like what I hear. I get the full 5.1 out of the system and the Play 1s sound fantastic as the rear pair of the surround sound set up. They really do sound good. The playbar is a great anchor for the TV when it comes to dialogue and as it acts as a front pair and center speaker for the whole system during movies and music. I apologize to all of the purists out there, but I love the Sonos system.
Setup is just too stinking easy. Wow.
And the streaming piece that meant nothing to me.........well, I played around with Spotify Premiere and what can I tell you? I can watch a boring football game while hoping for something spectacular to occur and instantly switch to listening to any of my 35 kabillion songs while keeping the game on. If something groovy happens on the tube, I just switch the sound back to the TV. There is zero lag between the TV and the system or between any of the separate speakers. outstanding synch. And with version 7.0 of the Sonos app I can stream from the Spotify app instead of having to use the Sonos app. Sweet.
Why only four stars then? As mentioned at the start of this diatribe, Sonos needs to get off their elitist butts and add HDMI connectivity and support for DTS. It is a tough decision to spring this kind of scratch for a system that could be phenomenal "if only....". After reading through countless forum threads about the issue, it almost seems as if the Sonos team takes a certain pride in telling their paying faithful to shut up and colors they decide are in our best interest. Not cool.
All in all it's hard to criticize the Sonos Play 1 as I have it set up in conjunction with the playbar and the sub. But it's expensive and technologically crippled for no apparent reason. I would recommend it if you can afford it, you aren't looking for audiophile ego strokes, you want to scrap the wires, and if you have a TV that passes the full 5.1 through the optical port.
IN SUMMARY: Bottom line: very happy with this purchase - good look, great sound, very versatile, easy to use. Definitely recommend, I will be adding to my system.

Background: My wife and I are very invested in our audio experiences, a bit of a hobby, but I would not say we are dedicated audiophiles. We have owned a number of receiver (can't say which is our favorite, but it rhymes with shma-ma-ha) and amp systems over the years to pound out the beats and bring to life our movies in surround. We have also invested in Bose, Polk and other speaker sets. Most recently, out of the need for portability and ease of use we have been buying and using bluetooth speakers (Big Jambox is our favorite). However, we decided we wanted a speaker system we could deploy in every room and be able to vary the music played in each. We wanted good to great sound without having to run a bunch of wires all through the house (very old school...and no more spools of Monster Cable).
Solution: Sonos PLAY 1, we bought 3 of these
Setup: Quite literally could not have been easier. Had them out of box and playing music in minutes. Adding speakers was a breeze as well. Once the app was loaded and recognizing the first speaker, adding the next two was even faster than the first. Keep in mind these need dedicated power outlets and are NOT battery operated (and they are not bluetooth either...point is people, be sure to read the specs before you buy so you understand what you are buying and the setup required)
Form Factor: These are fairly handsome, have good heft (not likely to knock over if you bump into it dancing) and an efficient footprint. Big enough for good sound (more on that later) but small enough that I could get them into tight spots on shelves in different rooms without being space hogs.
Operation: Sonos app was easy enough to get setup. Is fairly intuitive, is easy to select and play music, adjust volume, group and ungroup speakers. The only complaint is that I have to operate the speakers through the app when I prefer the interface from the source like Pandora or iTunes etc. Also occasionally Sonos does not recognize that my phone is connected to the wifi...so I have to go into settings, disconnect and then reconnect then re-launch Sonos (minor annoyance that delays me a few seconds from getting into room filling sound)
Sound (most important): The sounds is very very good. Head to head a single Play 1 pushes out better sound then our Big Jambox - louder, more crisp, more range, notably better base. We have the Play 1's deployed in fairly large rooms and they fill the rooms (one room is 15x20 with a cathedral ceiling, definitely enough for a party and sounds great for everyday listening. As far as top end sound goes, I have played them on full volume, did not hear much distortion and while my family did not like it, it does not bother my ears, not standing next to the speaker, but I wanted to know how both Guaraldi and AC/DC sound...important depending on what kind of party I am hosting. Point is, plenty loud but won't wake the neighbors (my closest neighbors are 40 yards away), will not break the windows and good sound throughout the entire range of volume. I am told the Play 3 and Play 5 might offer window breaking performance...(sounds awesome) but for now, my wife says we don't really need that :-)...and she tells me she is always right :-)
Price: Not cheap...but worth it.
Bottom line: very happy with this purchase - good look, great sound, very versatile, easy to use. Definitely recommend, I will be adding to my system.
