Love The XQD Cards!

XQD cards are highly controversial, but I love them! I own multiple XQD cards to include the S series, H series, and the newer G series 128GB. They are expensive and used for specific needs to include Sony FS7 4K video camcorders and high-end Nikon pro DSLRs like the D4 and the D4S. My advice is to purchase the newer G series if you are in the market for an XQD card. Sony locks in the prices so it's hard to get these discounted, so use your Amazon points. The newer G series are outstanding and read at 400MB/s and write at 350MB/s and come with a G-series USB 3.0 card reader that some people are complaining about because it won't read their older XQD cards, which seems silly to me b/c they have a reader for their older cards. The G-series reader is designed specifically for the G-series card to optimize data transfer rates with the G series newer controller. If you don't want to spend the $ for the G series I would at least get the 180MB/s XQD card (H series). These cards are great and I love them. I use them along with CF cards, but I love the XQD speed over the Compact Flash cards. It will be interesting moving forward to see if CFast 2.0 becomes accepted into newer camera systems along with the UHS-II spec in newer SD cards. I will say that I do not like the SD card format, it is simply too consumer-ish for my tastes, it's too small, and too plastic'y. I need quality and speed.

Fastest memory you can buy for the Nikon D4...

The D4 can shoot at 11fps for over 100 exposures in it's highest resolution RAW mode before you fill up the internal camera buffer with this memory- it's the only type of memory that can do it. Unfortunately it's not used in a lot of cameras ATM. The only 2 manufacturers who make this kind of memory are Sony (the people who designed the standard) and Lexar... the Lexar is WAY more expensive, so it's Sony for me, even though I generally like Lexar a lot, I'm not going to spend a 25%-30% premium for it. I'm sure it's great memory too, but I'd rather spend the difference on more memory cards.

Much has been written on the fact that the Nikon D4 has one Compact Flash card, and one XQD card. Yes, it is a bit inconvenient to have two different formats... but the XQD will rapidly convince you it's worth it in terms of the speed and convenience in actual USE. Especially when DOWNLOADING data from the cards... I wish I had TWO XQD slots in the D4! And it's much less likely you'll insert the card wrong accidentally... and damage pins in the camera.
Now if we could only get MORE CAMERAS than the D4 to USE them... so the prices for cards would go down!

I can capture long sequences of full-speed shots with this memory card. This is great for things like an Osprey diving and catching fish, where you really want to get the full sequence. Slower memory will stop the sequence because of a full buffer right at the most inopportune time.

But... It's expensive and needs that annoying XQD-only reader. I like the speed. I dislike the proprietary card that isn't commonly available, the reader that goes with it and the resultant price.

Works perfectly off the bat, writes the photos in a snap and I bought the Sony XQD Memory Card Reader (MRWE80/BC1) along with it. Taken only a few dozen with the card since usually the CF card is the main card for pictures, but having this card for high-speed photography with fast-moving subjects doesn't seem to make me nervous at all. I recommend this card. Will purchase one day the 3rd party cards to compare them, until then, you can't really go wrong with the original Sony.

I'm shocked more camera's don't use this card - as I write this only the Nikon D4 uses it. It smokes Lexar 1000x CF cards and has headroom to soot Raw file after RAW file at 10fps. It litterally delivers the 168MB/sec if you write to an SSD drive fast enough to receive those speeds, and there is a noticeable difference in performance on the D4 between it and the fastest CF card on the market.

For those D4 users that are wanking about the XQD cards they are the best technology that is currently available, They write faster than any card, way faster. The green recording light on the back of Nikon bodies that show the buffer in process will never register with this card and the D4. I would recommend buying a few of these cards because you can easily fill one up when shooting action.

I use a Nikon D4 and needed this card. It was really expensive and I was apprehensive about spending over £150 for a 32gb card, however, once i loaded it in the camera it changed everything, It was like using a different camera, raw images downloaded in nano seconds and high speed shooting was effortless, also downloading images from camera to Mac was really fast.
No regrets here, if you own a D4 or D4s, just buy it, you'll never look back. I'd recommend getting the 32gb over the 16 as you'll simply fill the 16 too quick!!
