From the manufacturer

Ultra-compact fast prime w/ G series lens quality and performance

Ultra-compact fast prime w/ G series lens quality and performance

The high-quality G Lens optical design incorporates three aspherical lens elements for sharp detail and outstanding corner-to-corner resolution. In addition, the state-of-the-art optical design takes maximum advantage of the short flange back, unique to mirrorless cameras, to realize stunning compactness at 68mm diameter x 45mm and a weight of only 173g. Mobility is a key feature, preserving the compactness of the overall E-mount system whether shooting with a full-frame or APS-C body or shooting either still images or movie.

Beautiful natural bokeh

The F2.5 max aperture is ideal for low-light situations for maximum light gathering capability while also providing a shallow depth of field. Beautiful natural bokeh expected from a G Lens is delivered with minimal spherical aberration and provision of a 7-blade circular aperture for round defocused light sources.

Corner-to-corner sharpness

High image quality is realized by the inclusion of three aspherical lens elements compensate for various aberrations, delivering high resolution performance from corner to corner of the image, even from the widest aperture with shallow depth of field.

7-blade circular aperture

While conventional aperture blades have flat sides that create unappealing, polygonal-shaped defocused points of light, the FE 40mm F2.5 G incorporates a 7-blade circular aperture mechanism to maximizes the beauty of this large-aperture prime-lens. The wide f2.5 aperture and circular aperture blades contribute to impressive images in which the subject stands out against a smoothly defocused foreground and background, as well as perfectly round points of defocused light.

Two Linear motors for fast, precise autofocus tracking

Taking full advantage of the continuing rapid advances in the speed and performance of newer camera bodies, two linear motors are used in the FE 40mm F2.5 G lens to deliver fast, precise AF (autofocus) with excellent tracking performance. Tracking is maintained despite instantaneous changes in subject motion, making the lens ideal for situations require tracking a moving subject.

Natural, linear manual focus response

Linear Response MF (manual focus) ensures that the focus ring responds directly and linearly to subtle control when focusing manually. Focus ring rotation translates directly to a corresponding change in focus, so control feels immediate and precise in both still and movie modes.

Close-ups in a standard field of view

Get a unique perspective through close-up, wide angle shooting. The standard 40mm angle of view is useful in applications from snap shots to movie shooting. The FE 40mm F2.5 G features an impressive minimum focus distance of 11.02” (0.28m) (AF) / 9.84” (0.25m) (MF) and maximum magnification of 0.2x (AF) / 0.24x (MF). With the wide F2.5 max. aperture, you can also shoot close-ups with beautiful blurred background bokeh.

Built for both worlds: Ideal for still and video creators

The FE 40mm F2.5 G lens has clear advantages for moviemaking. With an wide 40mm angle of view on full frame bodies and 60mm on APS-C bodies or Super 35mm cameras, dual linear motors for fast, precise autofocus and tracking, a bright F2.5 maximum aperture for beautifully defocused background bokeh, excellent close-up performance and a class leading ultra-compact and lightweight design, this lens is ideal for all types of content creators. In addition to the super small size and light weight, its internal focus design makes it convenient for use on compact gimbals or grips for vlogging and other applications.

I really wanted this lens, mainly because I went with mirrorless for size, among other things. And this pairs so nicely with my a7c. I’ve owned a Samyang 35mm f2.8 for a few months now. It’s small and compact, but probably a tad too small and for some reason I can’t quite explain, I haven’t really loved the pictures. Maybe just not as much as I had hoped. So I decided to upgrade and naturally spend 3 times the money for something .23 times better. Let’s be honest for just a sec. isn’t that what photography is usually all about? Oh well. I just took it out the box, slapped it on my a7c and it looks beautiful. Yes the hood is a bit awkward but that’s expected, they wanted it to be compact so I’m ok with it. The aperture ring is solid. It’s not gonna move around accidentally. I was quite worried about that. It feels a lot like my 20mm f1.8 but half the size. And it’s not as small as I was imagining, but it’s still great. Prob the perfect size. I’ve taken just a few pictures so far and it’s stunning. I can def notice the difference from my samyang. Auto focus is superb. Man I love Sony mirrorless.I struggled for a month decided if I should move forward with this lens. I really wanted a 35mm (trying to sell my Samyang right now). But I do also own a 28mmf2 so I think between that lens and this one (40mm) I’m good.Im not a pro. Just a major hobby I’ve invested way too much money in. So take it with a grain a salt but I felt there should be a review on Amazon just in case you can’t find any of the 16 reviews online or 16 YouTube reviews on this lens.Overall it’s tough to justify if you have a 35mm you love. Like a sigma f2 (ugh. I ended up picking this one over that one and I hope I don’t regret it) or the Sony 1.8 or 1.4. I guess if you really want something slightly more compact than those. Or if you just don’t own a 35mm maybe this one is a good alternative for you. (Again if you truly like the idea of a solid compact lens). For reference I’m able to fit it with my camera in my 5L peak design bag along with my 28mmF2 and my tamron 70-180. I always appreciate people providing that type of info so I hope someone else can appreciate this. I’d also easily be able to include my 55mm zeiss and 20mm f1.8 if I remove the tamron. Just FYI. It’s quite convenient to have a compact package. Not saying all my packages are compact. But not denying it either.

I recently purchased the Sony FE 40mm F2.5 G lens and it has exceeded all my expectations. Its ultra-compact design, weighing just 173g, makes it incredibly convenient for both professional and recreational photography. The high-quality G Lens optical design with three aspherical elements ensures impeccable sharpness and corner-to-corner resolution, a true testament to Sony's craftsmanship.

The F2.5 aperture is perfect for low-light conditions, providing excellent light gathering capabilities. The depth of field is shallow and artistic, with the 7-blade circular aperture contributing to a beautifully natural bokeh. This feature makes it an ideal lens for portrait photography.

Image quality is astounding. The aspherical elements counter various aberrations, maintaining high-resolution performance even at wide apertures. The defocused light sources are perfectly round, adding an aesthetic quality to my shots.

The autofocus, powered by two linear motors, is fast and precise, a crucial factor when tracking moving subjects. The Linear Response MF is particularly impressive, providing immediate and precise control, essential for both stills and video.

Overall, the Sony FE 40mm F2.5 G lens is a stellar combination of portability, performance, and quality. It's a versatile lens that has become an indispensable part of my photography kit. Highly recommended for those who value quality and versatility in a compact form.

Prob the perfect size. I’ve taken just a few pictures so far and it’s stunning. I can def notice the difference from my samyang. Auto focus is superb. Man I love Sony mirrorless.

I struggled for a month decided if I should move forward with this lens. I really wanted a 35mm (trying to sell my Samyang right now). But I do also own a 28mmf2 so I think between that lens and this one (40mm) I’m good.

Im not a pro. Just a major hobby I’ve invested way too much money in. So take it with a grain a salt but I felt there should be a review on Amazon just in case you can’t find any of the 16 reviews online or 16 YouTube reviews on this lens.

Overall it’s tough to justify if you have a 35mm you love.

Nice travel lens for my A7C ii. It has excellent sharpness and depth of field regardless of size actually. 40mm is a fun focal length putting it close to 35mm. My only gripe is the LoCA is very bad in some situations, to point it may be difficult to save the pic in light room. Most cases it works well though. Great to pair with the 24mm, perfect travel companion.

This is an outstanding lens by Sony. What stands out is its build quality, size, and image sharpness. I also love having the aperture ring on the outside of such a tiny lens.
The only unfortunate thing about this lens is that it's only an f2.5, but that's only because I prefer the fastest primes. But honestly, f2.5 is more than adequate for 95% of my work.
I love this lens in particular for street photography. 40mm is slightly tighter than 35mm but I think it's enjoyable.

I've recently switched my camera and lenses to the Sony E-mount system. I've been wanting to keep a decent range of lenses and wanted a good all purpose prime lens for everyday use when taking portraits and family photos. I have a wide-angle prime and a zoom telephoto for landscape and other photography. This 40mm F2.5 helps fill the gap in-between. The pictures from it have turned out very crisp with subjects in sharp focus. The F2.5 aperture really helps with that. It is also quite fast keeping moving subjects in focus. I have also used it as a webcam when I want to keep more of myself in the frame (If I want other things in the frame, I fall back to the wide angle lens). Overall, highly recommend this for everyday use. Its light weight and decent size make it ideal when travelling. Now I just need to add a macro lens to my arsenal.
**I purchased this product at a discounted price, in exchange for my honest appraisal of its performance.**

Incredibly sharp, well built, fast focusing (+ the focus assist feature that works with this lens on A7 cameras) id definitely buy again.
