Full-frame 70-300mm G Series F4.5–5.6 G Telephoto zoomSony's G-Series lenses are designed for maximum descriptive power, maintaining excellent peripheral light characteristics and maximizing contrast even at the edges of the frame. The SEL70300G offers high zoom and magnification for full-frame E-mount cameras equivalent to 70-300mm F4.5–5.6. In addition, when mounted to APS C cameras, the focal range can reach 105-450mm offering reach beyond previously available E-mount lenses. |
Nano AR Coating with nano-precision structureSony’s original Nano AR Coating technology produces a lens coating that features a precisely defined regular nano-structure that allows accurate light transmission while effectively suppressing reflections that can cause flare and ghosting. The reflection suppression characteristics of the Nano AR Coating are superior to conventional anti-reflective coatings, including coatings that use an irregular nano-structure, providing a notable improvement in clarity, contrast, and overall image quality. |
Optical SteadyShot image stabilizationBuilt-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps to reduce camera shake, particularly in telephoto, close-up, and low-light situations where camera shake is most likely to affect image quality. OSS makes it easier to capture clear images when shooting handheld. A convenient on/off switch - on the lens itself - can be used to control internal image stabilization which speeds up operation as there is no need to access the camera menu. |

Class-leading close-up focusing capability less than 3’ (0.9m)The SEL70300G telephoto zoom lens also features class-leading close-up performance, with a minimum focusing distance of less than 3 feet (0.9m) and a maximum magnification of 0.31x, making it an ideal choice for tele-macro photography. This outstanding close-up performance also factors into the lens’ excellent corner-to-corner sharpness. |
9-blade circular apertureThe 9-blade circular aperture forms a nearly perfect circle to create a pleasing and beautifully round background defocus or bokeh effect, especially when the lens is wide open. |
2x ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elementsAs focal lengths get longer, lenses built with conventional optical glass have difficulties with chromatic aberration, and as a result images suffer from lower contrast, lower color quality, and lower resolution. To counter such problems, 2x ED glass elements are included in the SEL70300G. It dramatically improves chromatic aberration at telephoto ranges, and provides superior contrast across the entire image, even at large aperture settings. |

|---|---|---|
4x Aspherical elements control spherical aberrationThe SEL70300G has an innovative optical design to achieve clear, high-quality images by effectively minimizing distortion and chromatic aberration. A double-Gauss configuration effectively suppresses field curvature and distortion, while four precisely placed aspherical elements control spherical aberration for excellent optical characteristics right out to the image periphery, rendering the subject with superior sharpness. |
Sophisticated, solid and reliableThe exterior metal barrel and sealed buttons and rings deliver outstanding operability and reliability in a design that resists the intrusion of dust and moisture which helps to ensure reliable operation in harsh outdoor conditions. Designed for reliability in a wide range of environments, the metal mount adds a sophisticated feel as well as solid durability. |
Linear actuator achieve fast, smooth, quiet autofocusA linear actuator and an inner focus mechanism are used for focus drive, resulting in fast, smooth, quiet focus operation. Lens noise pickup can be a problem when shooting movies, but with this lens operation is so smooth and quiet that autofocus can be used for shooting movies as well as stills. |

Pros:
300mm native to e-mount
Great image quality. Full images and crops seem MUCH sharper than my previous SAL70-300SSM
OSS helps with the lack of a tripod collar. I can use it handheld for a variety of situations that I wouldn't be able to without it.
3ft focusing for macro create excellent close-ups, especially with OSS.
build feels quite sturdy
Cons:
4.5-5.6 aperture means you need a lot of light or higher ISO to use if shooting wildlife.
compared to other e-mount lenses this is quite heavy, but if you use telephotos, you get heavy lenses.
autofocus is not as fast as some e-mount primes, and does miss on occasion. My a6000 has had issues with the autofocus choosing to focus on the closest object rather than the obvious animal in the viewfinder.
Expensive at $1200. My previous SAL70-300 with LA-EA1 adapter had drawbacks but only cost me a total of $600.
Overall, I'm very happy with this lens. The list of cons is completely outweighed, in my opinion, by having native autofocus and a 300mm focal length.

I originally gave this lens 4 stars, but I took it out on the lake yesterday and took some action shots from a bumpy, quick moving boat, of targets that were also bouncing. I was floored with the clarity and had to give it that final star!
Pros: Fast focus. Clear, crisp pictures. Amazing quality on action shots with super fast capture.
Cons: Heavy. When at full zoom, it takes a second or two to focus longer.

Image quality: 10/10
The images I've taken are very sharp, even at 300mm. Corner sharpness is really solid. Slight vignetting effect, but it's easily corrected in Lightroom. Lens flare is very well controlled, and I've not noticed any chromatic aberrations. I haven't noticed anything that would reduce my satisfaction with image quality.
Build quality: 9/10
Solid construction. Doesn't feel cheap at all. The focus ring could be smoother though. It's nothing like the 90mm Macro lens (which has my favorite adjustment ring). The zoom ring is pretty tight and not as smooth as I'd like, but apparently not tight enough as the lens will still creep if you walk around with the lens facing downwards (more on that later).
Usability/Convenience: 8/10
Everything seems to be in the right spot. It's got switches for AF/MF, focus limiting, and OSS. It also has a reprogrammable focus hold button and a zoom lock switch. The zoom lock switch isn't very conveniently placed, but what really irritates me is that it can only lock the lens at 70mm. This is a serious inconvenience for me, but might not bother some people. If you don't use the lock, the lens will creep quite considerably, so I'd recommend always using it.
The OSS is very good. I don't have any issues taking photos at slower shutter speeds. I've taken plenty of hand-held, 300mm 1/60s (or slower) photos that turned out to be perfectly usable.
Price: N/A
This is subjective, and totally up to you and your budget. For me it was well worth it. For people on a tight budget, it might not be.
I've included images, and each has has the focal length included (something which people should really consider doing more often...). The photos are not cropped unless specified, and I didn't do any processing/editing in Lightroom. Lens correction profiles were not applied. All photos were taken with the Sony a7 II.

If you do wildlife photography, this is the one to get. Don't suffer with your 55-210mm or 18-200mm. Buy this, put it on your camera, and don't look back.

Absolute Kaufempfehlung. :-)
FE 70-200mm F4 G:
Essentially the trade off is a wider aperture (only a stop more at 70mm) for less focal length on that lens. If you're using the lens for wildlife photography, I'd likely recommend the 70-300mm over the 70-200mm one as you can always "add exposure" in post, but you cannot add more focal length and you may find you cannot zoom in enough on your subject with the 200mm.
FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM:
Again, less focal length in exchange for a much wider aperture, so you're going to be getting sharper and lighter shots with better contrast in exchange for focal length. Furthermore, the £1600 price hike for that lens is simply not worth it in my opinion.
FE 100-400 F4.5-5.6 GM OSS:
If money were no issue to me, I likely would have gone for the 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 GM OSS because that is close to being the pinnacle of Sony telephoto lenses right now, but you are looking at around £1400 more than the 70-300mm for an extra 70mm of focal length (as that lens starts at 100mm not 70) with the same aperture.
Other:
I'm not even going to talk about the lenses that go over 400mm in focal length simply because they go into "I just won the lottery and want to spend it all today" territory (looking at you 600mm F4 GM at £12000 and 400mm F2.8 GM at £10500).
So, I'd say this lens is a must buy for anyone using an E-Mount Mirrorless, looking to take photos of animals or the moon or things that require such a long focal length.
Why 4 stars then?
The AF on this lens is really quite finicky. It very much likes to focus on what's direct in front, rather than the main subject. Had many missed shots due to the fact it was focussing on leaves or foliage, rather than activating the "Animal AF" and focussing on the animal I was looking at.
I did manage to "fix" the issue by going into my camera settings and using "centre focus" rather than wide or full-frame, but that only works if your subject is dead-centre; if you want shots with subjects on the side of the frame... well, good luck in a "crowded" environment.
A lot of people care about weight too; I had my A7iii with this lens attached around my neck all day at the local zoo and barely felt a strain. Because of the in-built OSS, barely any of my shots came out blurry (unless of course due to the weird AF) and they were all taken hand-held.
Don't get me wrong, the lens packs some weight, but nothing that is unusable or too clumsy.
tl;dr: Weird finicky AF, a tad heavy, excellent shots, fantastic price, MUST BUY for wildlife photographers.

The fly by wire focus is ok but not as good as manual direct focus. However the auto focus is excellent if you're likely to use that (on my A7R2).
I have confidence in this lens.
Verwendung an a7II
ansonsten Standardobjektiv: SEL2470GM
Kurzzusammenfassung meiner Eindrücke:
solide Bauweise, weich laufende Ringe, geräuschloser Autofokus,
