I have only had this adapter for a few days, but i am very pleased with it. I am using it with a Sony alpha 55-200 lens. With the 3.0 firmware update and the firmware update for the adapter, you will be able to auto focus with most Sony alpha lenses. My only complaint is that the auto focus is extremely slow, most of the time it is faster to manually focus, and you can still use the manual focus assist option which is pretty cool. If you are looking for an adapter that will allow you to use other lenses this will do the trick, but if you want the lens to auto focus like the e mount lenses then this is not it. It takes about 5 seconds in most cases for the lens to auto focus as opposed to the e mount 18-55 which focuses almost instantly.

As a backup camera to my SLT-A55, I wanted my NEX-3 to be able to use A-mount lenses on occasions. To that effect, the adapter works well. As a bonus, it came with a tripod mount which is a good thing, considering the heft of many of the A-mount lenses in my collection.

Please note that I said the adapter works well but there are a few things to consider. I use NEX primarily with manual focus lenses. In fact, the only auto-focus lens I have for E-Mount is the 18-55mm kit lens. But, with a firmware update for LA-EA1 (available on Sony's support website), this adapter allows use of auto-focus feature on many A-mount lenses. Please note that this firmware update is in addition to firmware updates released for NEX cameras themselves. The auto-focus feature, however, has its limitations:

Auto Focus Compatibility: The A-mount lenses come with (old-fashioned) screw-drive, (basic) SAM or (advanced) SSM systems for auto-focus. Along with these, I also have a lens with Sigma's HSM drive (similar to Sony's SSM). Auto-focus via LA-EA1 works best with SAM. It works with SSM as well, but appears to take longer. It doesn't work with the Sigma HSM (although, the drive is recognized but the camera continues to try focusing). A screw-drive lens is rendered a manual focus lens as the adapter has no control over the mechanical system that those lenses require.

Auto Focus Speed: As mentioned above, LA-EA1 auto focus capability works best/seamlessly with SAM lens. It is still slow taking a few seconds before focus is set. The capability is about as good with SSM lenses, however it is not as seamless. SSM lens will inevitably try to quickly focus, overshoot and then try to focus in little steps (hence, not as seamless as SAM) taking a few seconds.

I was fully expect that autofocus won't work on this adapter with my older lenses. That was the case for most of them. To my surprise, my Sigma 10-20mm F3.5 EX DC HSM autofocused quite nicely with it. Bonus!

I struggled with the decision to shell out 700 for the Emount 55-200 or buy the adapter and the Sony Alpha 55-200, I'm very happy with my decision. I'm looking forward to picking up some other A-type mount adapters.

Works very well for what I use it for. Autofocus is slow on some lenses, and not available on others, but what I really wanted to do with this was to use my A-mount 30mm macro lens on my NEX-7. In manual focus mode with focus peaking turned on, my A-mount macro is a joy to use on the NEX-7. I've been using this for all the camera "product" photos for my books, and it's a real life-saver because the NEX-7, this adapter, and the macro lens make a great combination. I prefer this over the LA-EA2, which is a *lot* more expensive, and bulkier with its phase-detection AF that I can live without.

Bought this for my NEX-3 so that I could use my Sony A-mount lenses with the NEX and still have AF rather than buying a cheaper adapter that would allow the A-mount lenses to attach to the camera, but would have to be used in MF. I just don't have the patience for this. It takes forever to auto focus when you use this adapter with the SAL55-200 Sony A-mount lens. I guess that is fine for most landscape photography, but with people, animals, or any moving subject, you can just about forget it. The product seems well built though I am certainly no expert. The product works pretty much as advertised--they admit it could take up to 7 seconds or so to focus. But you have to use it to understand just how aggravating it is waiting for it to focus. I think you can definitely get a $50 MF adapter for the E-mount system and focus in manually and shoot a subject just as fast or faster than you can using this AF adapter--- and not have to spend over $125. I am going to try another few days to adjust to it, but it seems pretty certain I will return this item. I just don't think its a viable solution to the problem of using non E-mount AF lenses with this camera.

What to say about this adapter....

If you want to be able to use your Alpha lens on your NEX/E-mount camera, this certainly works. The removable tripod mount on the lens is a nice touch and works quite well, if you add a quick release plate. +1 I tested this with my Alpha A-6000.

Pros:
* Any Alpha/Maxxum AF lens will mount on this adapter, allowing you to use Alpha optics on your NEX camera body. Screw drive lenses' screw drive will just push aside, so they will mount on this as well, just in manual focus mode.
* Will allow AF with SAM and SSM Lenses. I also tested this against a Tamron 24-70mm/2.8 HSM lens and it worked for that lens as well. (see note below)
* No light loss. Since there is no optical element in the middle, image quality is as good as your Alpha lens.

Cons:
* AF is SLOW. Whether I used SAM, SSM, or HSM lenses, the autofocus speed is incredibly slow. It seems the camera switches to using contrast auto-focus mechanisms. This makes even an f/2.8 HSM lens go super slow, making it next to useless for anything that moves. Native E-mount lenses will outperform AF performance here.

If you want to use Alpha/Maxxum lenses on your NEX and you want fast AF, I strongly recommend getting the LAE2 or the LAE4 versions of the adapter. The SLT AF mechanism in those adapters, along with screw drive capabilities, will give your NEX/E-Mount camera full access to those lenses.
