24.2MP and incredible image qualityThe a6400’s APS-C image sensor with approximately 24.2 effective megapixels uses copper wiring and a highly effective circuit process, resulting in efficient light collection that achieves a wide sensitivity range (Expandable ISO 100 – 102400) and excellent low noise performance even at high ISO. The design significantly increases readout speed, enabling functionality including 11fps continuous shooting3, 4K recording2 with full pixel readout without pixel binning and Full HD 120fps high-speed shooting. A front-end LSI supports the image processing of the new-generation BIONZ X image processing engine. Advances in image processing algorithms have further improved the superb image clarity, texture reproduction and image quality. |
World’s fastest autofocus1 with 4D FOCUSThe α6400’s unrivaled 4D FOCUS system boasts the world’s fastest autofocus (AF) acquisition time1 that can lock focus on even the fastest moving subject in as little as 0.02 seconds1. It also boasts an incredible 425 phase detection and 425 contrast detection AF points that are densely positioned over 84% of the image area, effectively tracking subjects as they move across the frame. Moreover, the α6400 takes full advantage of its enhanced fast hybrid AF for movies in both HD and 4K2. With the optimized new-generation subject motion prediction algorithm from the α9. Both AF detection accuracy and tracking performance have been boosted. |
Advanced Real-time Eye-AFAdvanced “Real-time Eye AF” employs artificial intelligence to detect and process eye data in real time, resulting in improved accuracy, speed and tracking performance of Eye AF. With a half press of the shutter button, the camera can automatically detect the eyes of the subject and activate Eye AF in all autofocus modes and when in either AF-C or AF-A mode, eye capture is continuously maintained. Additionally, the preferred eye (left or right) of your subject can be selected as the focus point. Choices include Auto/Right Eye/Left Eye, and a Switch Right/Left Eye function is assignable to a custom function as well. |

Real-time Tracking AF“Real-time Tracking” utilizes a special object recognition algorithm that processes color, subject distance (depth), brightness (pattern) as spatial information, plus AI information including face and eye location, ensuring that all subjects can be captured with extreme accuracy and precision. This can be activated by a simple half press of the shutter button, or can be assigned to a custom function as well. |
Up to 11fps3 at 24.2MP with AE/AF trackingThe α6400 has been designed to allow for high resolution, continuous shooting at high frame rates. It features a front-end LSI that works with the image sensor, BIONZ X image processing engine and a newly designed shutter mechanism with ‘braking feature’ to enable continuous shooting at impressive speeds up to 11fps3 with continuous autofocus and auto-exposure tracking at full 24.2MP resolution while utilizing the mechanical shutter, and up to 8 fps3 with full AF/AE tracking while silent shooting. The α6400 can also shoot continuously for up to 116 JPEG and 46 compressed RAW frames4, thanks to a large buffer. These shots can be viewed immediately after shooting, even when in high-speed continuous shooting mode. |
4K movie2 w/ 2.4x oversampling4, full pixel readout, no pixel binningThe α6400 offers internal 4K (QFHD: 3840 x 2160) recording2 in Super 35mm format with full pixel readout and no pixel binning at 2.4x oversampling4 (6K equivalent) for the ultimate 4K footage with exceptional detail and depth. Additional professional video features include; HDR (HLG), S-Gamut3/S-Log3and 3, plus Gamma Display Assist, the ability to record Full HD at 120 fps for up to 5x slow motion HD video7, both a mic jack and XLR compatibility via the MI shoe, enhanced Zebra functionality, focus peaking, picture profile settings, as well as Time Code / User Bit, clean HDMI output and much more. |

Fast Hybrid AF allows smooth focusing for moviesEffective use of the focal plane phase-detection system makes focusing during movie shooting fast and stable. The upgraded Fast Hybrid AF technology keeps your subject in constant smooth focus no matter the scene. This advanced AF plus touch focus functionality on the 180-degree titlable LCD make it an ideal camera choice for many vloggers and video creators that are regularly creating and uploading content online. Touching the subject that you wish to focus on the screen initiates accurate and smooth continuous focus tracking, while analyzing color, brightness pattern, distance (depth) and face information. AF drive speed and AF Tracking Sensitivity are also adjustable to support creative movie making. |
180-degree fully tiltable LCD touch screen for self-recordingThe fully tiltable (180-degree), 3” (3.0-type) LCD flip screen with 921k-dots of high-resolution allows for simple and effective selfie-style shooting for both still image and video capture. Utilizing this capability, vloggers will be able to check and monitor composition throughout their entire creative process. The LCD screen is also equipped with touch functionality, with options for Touch Pad, Touch Focus, Touch Shutter and new Touch Tracking which quickly activates “Real-time Tracking” through the touch screen. |
A wide variety of touch screen operationsThe LCD offers a wide variety of touch operations enabling intuitive shooting and fast focus operation. The Touch Focus function allows the desired focus point to be specified instantaneously by touching the subject on the monitor. Touch Shutter function instantaneously focuses on the subject touched on the monitor and releases the shutter, so that the desired subject can be captured with one touch. The touchpad function allows smooth focus position adjustment while using the viewfinder. Sliding a finger across the monitor moves the focus area position and can be moved smoothly while looking through the viewfinder. Touch Tracking function, works by touching the subject that you wish to focus on the screen and then half-pressing the shutter button activates Real-time Tracking. When shooting movies, touching the subject initiates tracking that maintains focus on the subject. |

For those upgrading from an older Sony camera, the biggest new features are a touchscreen, effortless Eye AF, and Real-Time Tracking. The touchscreen is great for repositioning your Eye-AF point quickly, allowing you to tap or drag a finger across the back LCD. This functionality is available viewing the LCD or EVF and is a huge step up from the old four-way directional pad. The upgraded Sony Eye-AF is incredible and allows you to focus on composition without worrying about where your camera is focused. Lastly, Real-Time Tracking allows you to pick a moving subject and hold onto them like glue.
On its own, I feel like this is a great travel camera. I can fit the 18-135mm zoom, 35mm prime, and 10-18mm zoom in a very small bag and carry them all day with ease on a hike or through a crowded city. The image quality is quite good without the bulk and weight of a larger camera.
There are only a few downsides to this device. I wish that Sony had included a joystick and another exposure dial in the design to allow for even better control. Sony only included a slow UHS-I card slot, and the camera takes FOREVER to clear its buffer. Lastly, Sony did not fit IBIS into this model, instead reserving the feature for their future top-of-the-line A6600.
Overall, I love this camera for travel!

Sony's Unmatched Realtime Eye-AF
The Stupid fast AF for both Photo and Video
Weight and Usability and Customizability!
My favorite Setup so far is the a6400 + Sony 85mm 1.8(127.5mm Effective Crop Sensor) or the Sigma 16mm 1.4 (21mm Effective Crop Sensor). So practically getting a 24mm and a 135mm with an amazing body! Just add the flash of your choice!(I'm a portrait Photographer)

There is no IBIS in this camera but my lenses have OS or IS image stabilization and works very well.
There is an Auto ISO feature which takes 3 pictures in rapid succession and combines them like an HDR image for you. I love this feature and it is awesome in low-light without a flash.
The clear digital zoom is another feature that extends your lens range to double and is handy at times if you want that shot but lack the reach. for ex. if you have a lens that can zoom upto 200mm the clear zoom will make it 400 mm if you choose that option in menu settings.
The learning curve on the Menu can be a little overwhelming but there are excellent tutorials to help you out. I personally like Mark Galers youtube channel. Just FYI.
The ability to customize the menu is awesome for your taste. The menu and controls are on par and similar to an A9.
The camera is growing on me definitely and 10 days later I love the camera even more. I will push it to the limits this spring and see how it performs. I am almost confident that I will not be disappointed.
I come from canon after being 15 years loyal to them and I still use canon lenses. I believe Sony gives more value for your money at-least in their camera lineup.
Edit: Added one more image and the battery life is also pretty good.

But what really convinced me was that it does not shut down after only a few minutes of recording as the other alpha models and it has no recording lenght limit.
Other great new features are the upgraded eye autofocus and the ability to power it directly via the micro USB port.
Finally, image quality is deffinuteky better than the a6000. I can finally use ISO higher than 1600 knowing my images will look good.
And lastly, I really like the silent shutter. It is something I really need sometimes snd now I have it.

UPDATE: Got the replacement from Amazon. This is indeed a good camera, with lots of features for a beginner like me to play with, well worth the money.
I wanted a camera that's small and lightweight for taking pictures of my dog on the walk/hike. Yeah, this is my 'dog cam'. Without IBIS can be an issue for some but most of my lenses either have the build-it image stabilizer or prime lenses with f1.4/1.8 wide open aperture, so getting reasonable shutter speed is relatively easy. The high ISO performance of this camera is only mediocre.
Surprisingly, I think Sony's menu system is great. I use the customized menu most of the time but I also never had issues finding a setting from the menu system, at least it's not better/worse than Nikon and Canon, and it is a lot less confusing compared to Fuji's menu, which is the worst IMO.
Here are some tips for getting the most out of the A6400:
1. Turn off the Picture Profile when shooting still.
2. Only shoot with manual exposure, manual WB. AUTO WB is all over the place when shooting outdoors.
3. Can't trust EVF or the screen, learn to read the histogram.
4. Shooting with MF lenses should pair with external monitor.
5. Get good lenses and fast lenses to avoid boosting ISO beyond 1600.
* Spare batteries
For video:
1. Only shoot with manual exposure, manual focus and manual WB.
2. Use HLG if you are not good with colour grading, or SLOG-2 if you are. Adobe PP has the colour banding issue with SLOG-2 when pushing too far, Davinci Resolve 17 does it better.
3. Make sure to turn on Project Color Management in Davinci Resolve and use Wide Colour Gamma.
4. Get a good gimbal and forget about IBIS.
5. Rig it out to shoot handheld and forget about IBIS.
6. Use an external monitor.
7. Spare batteries/dummy battery with an external battery pack.
Get out and take some pictures and stop worrying about the features you don't have.
Enjoy your A6400!
