24.2MP and incredible image quality

The a6400’s APS-C image sensor with approximately 24.2 effective megapixels uses copper wiring and a highly effective circuit process, resulting in efficient light collection that achieves a wide sensitivity range (Expandable ISO 100 – 102400) and excellent low noise performance even at high ISO. The design significantly increases readout speed, enabling functionality including 11fps continuous shooting3, 4K recording2 with full pixel readout without pixel binning and Full HD 120fps high-speed shooting. A front-end LSI supports the image processing of the new-generation BIONZ X image processing engine. Advances in image processing algorithms have further improved the superb image clarity, texture reproduction and image quality.

World’s fastest autofocus1 with 4D FOCUS

The α6400’s unrivaled 4D FOCUS system boasts the world’s fastest autofocus (AF) acquisition time1 that can lock focus on even the fastest moving subject in as little as 0.02 seconds1. It also boasts an incredible 425 phase detection and 425 contrast detection AF points that are densely positioned over 84% of the image area, effectively tracking subjects as they move across the frame. Moreover, the α6400 takes full advantage of its enhanced fast hybrid AF for movies in both HD and 4K2. With the optimized new-generation subject motion prediction algorithm from the α9. Both AF detection accuracy and tracking performance have been boosted.

Advanced Real-time Eye-AF

Advanced “Real-time Eye AF” employs artificial intelligence to detect and process eye data in real time, resulting in improved accuracy, speed and tracking performance of Eye AF. With a half press of the shutter button, the camera can automatically detect the eyes of the subject and activate Eye AF in all autofocus modes and when in either AF-C or AF-A mode, eye capture is continuously maintained. Additionally, the preferred eye (left or right) of your subject can be selected as the focus point. Choices include Auto/Right Eye/Left Eye, and a Switch Right/Left Eye function is assignable to a custom function as well.

Real-time Tracking AF

“Real-time Tracking” utilizes a special object recognition algorithm that processes color, subject distance (depth), brightness (pattern) as spatial information, plus AI information including face and eye location, ensuring that all subjects can be captured with extreme accuracy and precision. This can be activated by a simple half press of the shutter button, or can be assigned to a custom function as well.

Up to 11fps3 at 24.2MP with AE/AF tracking

The α6400 has been designed to allow for high resolution, continuous shooting at high frame rates. It features a front-end LSI that works with the image sensor, BIONZ X image processing engine and a newly designed shutter mechanism with ‘braking feature’ to enable continuous shooting at impressive speeds up to 11fps3 with continuous autofocus and auto-exposure tracking at full 24.2MP resolution while utilizing the mechanical shutter, and up to 8 fps3 with full AF/AE tracking while silent shooting. The α6400 can also shoot continuously for up to 116 JPEG and 46 compressed RAW frames4, thanks to a large buffer. These shots can be viewed immediately after shooting, even when in high-speed continuous shooting mode.

4K movie2 w/ 2.4x oversampling4, full pixel readout, no pixel binning

The α6400 offers internal 4K (QFHD: 3840 x 2160) recording2 in Super 35mm format with full pixel readout and no pixel binning at 2.4x oversampling4 (6K equivalent) for the ultimate 4K footage with exceptional detail and depth. Additional professional video features include; HDR (HLG), S-Gamut3/S-Log3and 3, plus Gamma Display Assist, the ability to record Full HD at 120 fps for up to 5x slow motion HD video7, both a mic jack and XLR compatibility via the MI shoe, enhanced Zebra functionality, focus peaking, picture profile settings, as well as Time Code / User Bit, clean HDMI output and much more.

Fast Hybrid AF allows smooth focusing for movies

Effective use of the focal plane phase-detection system makes focusing during movie shooting fast and stable. The upgraded Fast Hybrid AF technology keeps your subject in constant smooth focus no matter the scene. This advanced AF plus touch focus functionality on the 180-degree titlable LCD make it an ideal camera choice for many vloggers and video creators that are regularly creating and uploading content online. Touching the subject that you wish to focus on the screen initiates accurate and smooth continuous focus tracking, while analyzing color, brightness pattern, distance (depth) and face information. AF drive speed and AF Tracking Sensitivity are also adjustable to support creative movie making.

180-degree fully tiltable LCD touch screen for self-recording

The fully tiltable (180-degree), 3” (3.0-type) LCD flip screen with 921k-dots of high-resolution allows for simple and effective selfie-style shooting for both still image and video capture. Utilizing this capability, vloggers will be able to check and monitor composition throughout their entire creative process. The LCD screen is also equipped with touch functionality, with options for Touch Pad, Touch Focus, Touch Shutter and new Touch Tracking which quickly activates “Real-time Tracking” through the touch screen.

A wide variety of touch screen operations

The LCD offers a wide variety of touch operations enabling intuitive shooting and fast focus operation. The Touch Focus function allows the desired focus point to be specified instantaneously by touching the subject on the monitor. Touch Shutter function instantaneously focuses on the subject touched on the monitor and releases the shutter, so that the desired subject can be captured with one touch. The touchpad function allows smooth focus position adjustment while using the viewfinder. Sliding a finger across the monitor moves the focus area position and can be moved smoothly while looking through the viewfinder. Touch Tracking function, works by touching the subject that you wish to focus on the screen and then half-pressing the shutter button activates Real-time Tracking. When shooting movies, touching the subject initiates tracking that maintains focus on the subject.

    Back to business!
Just awesome! This camera is just what I was hopping it will be. It is the replacement for my old A77 with no functioning lcd and my outdated but still functionals a580 and a850 fullframe. I also got the e mount adapter to work with my A mount lens collection from my Minolta times. All works great 👍🏼 . Even my old flash mount adapter workrd! I tested my HVL-F56AM and HVL-58AM flash units and both works great with the new a6400. The camera came in very good condition and well protected. It also came with the firmware updated version 2.0 A great product and great price. If you have an old lens collection and Minolta adapters this will be your best and affordable choice to go with. You will not be disappointed... Now, to have fun with it.

Wanting to leave my more expensive gear at home for a recent cruise to Alaska I picked up the 6400 with the kit 16-50mm lens. While I’ve heard lots of praise for the 6400 the kit lens is often dismissed, but in my experience it was well above its price point. The image quality was crisp and colorful. I was so impressed that I usually left my bulky expensive lens in my cabin. Equally impressive was the ClearZoom function - absolutely usable up to 1.6x with no discernible quality loss for standard jpeg images.
Battery life was also much better than my A7Rii but far short of my Canon cameras. 2 batteries basically lasted for a full day of constant shooting.
Even in 2024 this is absolutely a great setup and incredibly compact and lightweight. It’ll be my summer travel camera with zero reservations.
For the money it’s an incredible value and from my experience the kit lens is no slouch. Focusing was fast and spot on.

I had DSLRs for decades and enjoyed them. But I don't travel as much and needed a smaller easy ro carry camera. Tried ZV e10 and it's nice but I missed the viewfinder especially on bright sunny days. Did some more research and got this one. Only been a day but love it already! Easy auto settings with more than enough custom settings. Great quality. The LCD screen will get a bit getting used to but everything else is great fun. Looking forward to testing it in different settings.

I like that this line of mirrorless cameras is lightweight and is relatively compact compared to a digital DLR. As with many of the newer digital cameras the 6400 shoots beautiful video and I am especially happy with it having a stereo mini input that would allow use of high end microphones. The camera is light years ahead of the bulky cameras I used to use on commercial field shoots. Aspiring videographers don't know how lucky they are to have tools like this at their disposal at such a low cost. Not only is the video stellar, the stills are too. I love the continuous shooting mode when shooting wildlife. Sony has a great lineup of lenses to pair with the camera and other lens manufacturers are developing lenses for the Sony E Mount cameras as well.

In short, for those who do not like to read my whole review: This camera is a technical marvel with lots of features. Even more than four years after its release, the photos produced are top-notch and blow every cell-phone picture (even with its AI-augmentations) away. The camera is relatively well portable despite its APS-C sized sensor and an interchangable lens system. A fantastic camera for family, kids and pets due to its remarkable eye-autofocus system. Only notable downsides for me are the (still high) price, the lack of in-body stabilization, the limited (Sony) lens lineup, and some weird button placement for recording movies.

    Long version:
I would consider myself an amateur photographer. While I love photography, I do not have the time, the equipment, nor the money to pursue it beyond using it on weekends for family trips or some events. Thus when I considered getting this camera, I really had to think carefully: Is this camera really necessary in times of tremendous progress and miniturization in cellphone cameras? Is it worth the $1000, am I motivated to carry it around, is it giving me photos I would not likely get on my cellphones? All of that I will go into in this review.

After three years of consistent usage, over 20000 photos taken, I am still happy to have invested in this system. Sony solidified its position in the camera market with the NEX APS-C interchangable lens system and made traditional reflex-mirror systems for consumers basically obsolete. The a6400 is a natural evolution with tremendous improvements from its predecessors. Marketed to vloggers initially, I find the most impressive feature the Eye-AF (eye autofocus).

My main motivation to jump on this camera was that particular focusing feature. I wanted to capture my kid jumping and running around and capture and freeze this joy in place in a photo. Previous cameras and cell-phones produced blurry or out of focus photos due to the rapid movements, often sub-par lightning and the bad sensor. The eye-AF improved this to a point where the vast (95+%) majority of photos taken are tack-sharp on the subject, regardless of movement and lighting. Absolutely fantastic.

The photos themselves are coming from an APS-C sized chip with all its pros and cons. If you are not looking for professional camera (you would not read this review anyway), this camera has likely all the bells and whistles you need. Great for videos, easy usage, great automatic settings, swivel display for selfies, good* lineup of lenses. Sure, many other "smaller" companies have produced innovative cameras (Fuji comes to mind lately) - this camera is still a top-place contender even almost half a decade later.

The camera itself is a bit heavier than the 2010s NEX-generation cameras, but are still highly portable. Even in my small purse-like shoulderbag, I can easily pack the camera, and two lenses in it. My usual setup is just the camera with a fixed-aperture zoom (
Sigma 18-50 F2.8 ) with a shoulder strap from Peak Design ( Peak Design Slide Camera Strap ) - its a noticable weight but not too heavy where it would be impeding even longer mountain hikes or walks.

Speaking of lenses, this is a contentious issue: Sony was not well-known for the lens lineup - they still are not, to be fair. Especially for APS-C systems, their lineup seems limiting. Fortunately, there are many other companies that produce e-mount compatible lenses. Personally, I can vouch for the Sigma prime lenses - I have extensively used the 30mm
Sigma 30mm F1.4 , or alternatively a good constant aperture zoom lens, such as the  Sigma 18-50 F2.8  for more flexibility.

Predominantly shooting family, portraits and landscapes, this was a great purchase. The game-changing Eye-AF aside, I loved the image quality, ease of use and the relatively inexpensive non-Sony lineup of e-mount lenses. If you have time to properly edit the image after in Photoshop or Lightroom, the results can easily match professional-level cameras. A quick note here: If you transfer photos, try to avoid Sony's app - it likes to crash and is very slow on all three of my systems. Instead invest in a good USB-C high-speed SD card reader and get your images.

There are - as usual - always some downsides. I personally would have loved to see in-body stabilization for stability with non-steadyshot (i.e. mostly non-Sony) lenses. Moreover, I am still puzzled by the lack of APS-C compatible lenses. Sure, you can buy now a lot of full-frame e-mount lenses, but the weight (and price) is not appropriate for this system. Finally, something very small, but bothersome is the strange placement of the recording button near the front edge of the camera - if you are not careful you will press it by accident a couple of times. Finally, for this price, you can now (2023) get very well-developed tech in cameras, or cell phones - the competition is not sleeping. I am happy that I was able to get into this system and still did not suffer any significant value depreciation.

    Pros:
+ Image and video quality are still fantastic
+ Eye-Autofocus is nothing short of a gamechanger for dynamic (read: kids, pets) photography
+ Lots of nice features hidden behind a (not-so-great) user interface
+ Great and affordable selection of really suitable lenses from third-party companies
+ Swivel display that can turn 180 degrees to make selfies easy (especially useful for vloggers)

    Cons:
    - No in-body stabilization
    - Limited Sony lenses for APS-C
    - Very limited telephoto capabilities without switching to full-frame lenses
    - Very odd placement of the movie recording button

    Neutral:
+/- The price is basically unchanged on Amazon, which is fascinating for a tech product four years of age
+/- The menu is not very user-friendly
+/- The app to control and download photos via WiFi is very finnicky.
+/- You will be "stuck" in the Sony e-mount system camp, once you invest in some expensive lenses. This makes switching to Canon/Nikon/Fuji systems more expensive (i.e. rebuying similar lenses).

Bottomline: Even after three years of use - I truly enjoy this really capable system for everyday photography brim-filled with features. The eye-autofocus in particular changed my life (and my pictures!) for the better. You won't be disappointed by the image and quality once you go with suitable prime lenses or good zoom objectives. I subtracted a star due to the missing in-body stabilization, the (now) high price, and the sub-par app from Sony.

I have a Sony A7RV full frame, with that in mind this camera does the job very well. I shoot portraits, venues and passport photos and this APSC can do all those just fine.

Post production workflow is much quicker given there is less megabytes to process (from a 61 megapixel full frame to a 24 megapixel APSC). So it's a dream in that regard.

A lot is said about the small size and portability about this camera. I have the Sigma 30mm 1.4 to go with this, and yes, the small size and portability is great.

This camera doesn't have all the bells and whistles that my A7RV has, but that's not impeding my work flow by any means.

If you're on the fence, just get it. Affordable, compact, great autofocus and actually has a faster burst rate than my A7RV.

I umm'd and ahh'd about which camera to buy for several months. Finally i landed on this one. The sony is not perfect, but nothing is unless you want to spend big bucks. This camera produces fantastic images, is portable, doesn't scream "EXPENSIVE CAMERA" and is excellent for photo and video. The main missing thing for me was IBIS and i wish it was full frame, but full frame means mega expensive lenses. Now that the A6700 has been released, if i was buying a camera today i would likely go for that model, but the A6400 still holds its own for the price.
