After two supposed all-region players (one Panasonic and one Pioneer) had to be returned to another supplier because of malfunctions, I tried this, and have been using it for roughly the last month or so. It works as advertised, connected to my Sony Bravia 32" TV, plays both NTSC (N. America) and PAL (European) DVDs flawlessly (I'm currently watching some French disks, and have no problems -- except for words outside my limited French vocabulary, that is!). I have only tried it with US Blu-ray, but these disks work beautifully too. The hook-up to the internet is reasonably simple, though Sony unfortunately prefers to give the directions through a video rather than spelling them out (awkward if the TV is in one room and the computer in another).
The hook-up is via an HDMI cable. Actually what I have is a) an HDMI cable running from the Comcast box to an HDMI switch; b) an HDMI cable running from the Sony player to the same switch: and c) a third (and very short) cable running from the HDMI switch to the Sony TV.
So I am -- so far -- very pleased with it. I hope I still am a year from now. My only cavil is that the instruction book is pretty bare bones, and it would have been nice of Sony to have provided a bit more information, rather than assuming you'll head for the website whenever trouble emerges.
I happen to have a college library nearby, with many non-American DVDs in its collection; hence my preference for an all region player. If you don't need that particular form, I think the standard BDP-S5100 is a good deal cheaper.

With universal region playback of anything you stick in it, and N wireless speed, it does HD from discs and streaming from ANY decent provider. I use it every day for Netflix/Amazon Prime, and it does Hulu+ and etc. The Sony service blows, but so what? Buy this one. The price is worth it.

After having gone through 2 all region Blu-Ray players that had problems I really like this product. It's features are more than I need now but will be invaluable when I move overseas. I never would have guessed that a player would have wireless capability, and so many types of inputs. I have had no problem with performance or reliabilty. Having a small footprint and pleasing design doesn't hurt either.

I have hundreds of DVD's from all over the world, even Nepal, and they all played perfectly.

UPDATE: This unit does have a short boot-up time. After you turn it on the front display will say 'WAIT'. Please do. Do not try to eject a disc or open the DVD drawer at this time. The player will lock up and only a power reset, unplug it and then plug it back in, will clear it up. Merely waiting for the front display to say 'EMPTY' before opening the DVD drawer is not an issue for me.

I wish I purchased this unit earlier. It would have made buying a Roku box unnecessary.

The Sony BDP-S5100 plays BR, DVD, CD and USB content of any code or region very well. The display settings and menu options, however, are very bad. One particularly annoying problem arises when you need to find menu items in long queues, such as in Netflix, or a collection in a USB attached device or through a network connection, within a reasonable time. In that case, prepare to wait patiently because the BDP-S5100 displays items in a long, single vertical line that takes a VERY long time to scroll down laboriously to the end, or back to the top (no fast scroll option, either). For example, the comparable LG BR player gives you the option to display contents of queues in a grid that extends several columns across the screen, 10 items deep per column. In this setting, it takes me in the LG BR player about five seconds to go from A to Z in my video collection; it takes five MINUTES or more to locate the same item in the Sony BDP-S100 display. So, if you are buying the Sony to play individual discs or have very short queues for everything else, it is a good purchase. Otherwise, until Sony comes up with a better display option, I would give it a miss. There are much more practical choices for code free/alternate voltage players in the current market.

Finally get to watch some DVD's I picked up along my journeys out of country. Player looks great and works great. Connected to the internet easily and watch amazon prime movies through the player. Loads of extras and worth the extra money.

When I first opened the box, there was a warning letter stating that the player could not be firmware updated or it could lose it's region-free capability. After buying this, I noticed that other sellers are advertising the same player with an extra modification to make them upgradeable. Check with the distributor before your purchase!

Other than the above problem, I really love this player. Switching between regions is fast and simple. I have tried region 1 and 2 discs and also PAL and NTSC discs with no problems. Disc load times are super fast too.

If you are a 3D lover like me, you will appreciate some very cool features of this player. You can actually adjust the depth of the picture when playing 3D movies. You can also add depth to 2D movies to give them a 3D look. Of course, this isn't nearly as good as playing a movie recorded in 3D but I do enjoy this feature.

This player also has built in "super Wi-Fi" which is supposed to deliver streaming video faster than standard Wi-Fi. I haven't noticed a huge difference between this and my older Sony Wi-Fi player but this does have a few new features. For example, you can look up YouTube videos on your laptop or cell phone and send them directly to this player. The only internet feature I would like to have that Sony hasn't offered yet is the Amazon Cloud music player.
