DSCHX99ring

Eye-AF for perfect portraits

The sophisticated Eye AF feature can be activated to automatically detect and focus on the eyes of the main subjects in your shots. It rapidly and accurately detects eyes even under difficult conditions, such as when the subject is looking downward or when faces are backlit or dimly lit.

Fast Intelligent AF to capture decisive moments

The HX99 adopts Fast Intelligent AF using high-speed, highly accurate contrast-detection autofocus. It achieves focus by minimizing wasted lens motion, predicting AF range and accelerating the lens drive, improving response so you can capture even more fleeting moments.

Control ring for advanced photography

The convenient lens-mounted control ring allows you to operate pro-style manual controls such as manual focus, step zooming or selecting shutter speed, aperture, and more for added creative control — so there’s no need to compromise your vision because of the camera’s compact size. The HX99 also features a customizable ‘My Menu’ option for instant recall of up to 30 different settings.

When using the electronic viewfinder, the LCD can be used as a Touch Pad AF to shift focus smoothly and easily, simply by sliding your finger across the LCD screen.

Ok but pic quality was just as good or better on my 7-year old camera; not worth the $
My 7-year old Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX20V is starting to get old (collecting dust inside, which I can get cleaned out, but also starting to make weird grinding noises when it focuses), so I thought I'd look for a new camera. I like my camera, so I thought I'd try an update. On paper, it has everything I want - good zoom in a light camera with decent battery life. But the picture quality wasn't as good, at least the way I use it as a point-and-shoot; it was softer, with more noise, and the colors were a bit off. The pix I uploaded are probably the most drastic example. I took them through a window at high zoom. The one with higher saturation is closer to the true color, and came from my old camera.....

I took this on a month long overseas trip. And I've used it around my workshop to make videos.

GOOD: The flip up display for use from in front of the camera is great. The video quality is good, and so is the picture quality PROVIDED there's enough light. There are a zillion options to tweak the shots, I'm sure I've only scraped the surface with them. The zoom is pretty amazing and the auto-stabilization works really well. The thing is really tiny and convenient to move around.

NOT SO GOOD: The low-light capabilities are pretty atrocious to be honest, and this is widely reported in other reviews and I knew this before I bought it. There's occasions when it struggles to focus even in good light but that's autofocus for you. It does go through batteries, on average I used 3 a day when traveling, just taking happy snaps of things I saw.

TERRIBLE : The wireless/phone interface transfer stuff is truly 18th century and Sony should be embarrassed by it. Without any doubt the only real way to transfer stuff from the camera is to yank out the memory card and plug it into a laptop. I'm glad I bought a huge memory card because if I'd had to manage "remaining shots" on my trip by transferring to my phone it would have been a nightmare.

SUMMARY: This is a highly functional, portable camera with good imaging quality and amazing zoom capabilities. Just don't expect to use it at night, without doubt your phone will do a better job.

I purchased this just before taking a trip to Maine and Canada and was absolutely thrilled with the results. It’s quick, has an amazing zoom, and takes great pictures. It’s replaced a year old, large RX10V IV Sony camera and an older Sony NXR and I’m convinced delivers equally good photos. The two things I’m not thrilled with is the interface with Apple products....just not intuitive; and the second is that it doesn’t appear to have the same ability to download Sony software to enhance the photography options and experience. Otherwise, a great...really great travel camera.

This camera is a great travel camera because it is so lightweight. The pictures are good quality and the zoom is great, although it is a bit hard to hold steady at the long zoom, while trying to focus. I think that this is because it is so small and therefore, doesn't have a large grip. At the longest zoom, the pictures can be a bit grainy,if you don't have it focused exactly. Even then, you lose a bit of detail.

As others have said, my iphone takes better pictures in low light.

It has a wrist stap, but you really need to add something to the strap to tighten it a bit, or it can slip off your wrist, if your wrists are small.

Because it can be a bit difficult to hold onto, I would definitely suggest buying the insurance plan. I recently, tripped on vacation and dropped mine. It was only a few months old. The insurance plan was easy to use and fixed it for free and it is working fine. I would have been sick, if I didn't have the insurance, since it was new.

What makes a great travel camera? Small size. Good picture quality. Flexible range. Good auto mode. Some manual controls. The Sony HX99 has all these features. Its hard to beat a tiny point and shoot that can fit in your pocket and can take everything from modestly wide landscapes to long telephoto shots. About the only strike against it might be the price. If you want a "take everywhere and do everything" camera that can out do your phone camera, I would recommend taking a good look at the HX99.

This was an expensive "pocket" camera, and I was disappointed, sending it back after about a week. First, the so-called instruction "manual" was woefully inadequate, only a small piece of paper with some very basic information, for a rather complicated camera. I imagine if I were more of an engineer type person, or if I spent many hours doing trial and error to find out how to program and understand it, I might have kept it. Some photos I took were amazingly good. And many were not. The flash stopped working after a very short time. It was an exercise in frustration for me, and I was not willing to spend more time deciphering what to do for more consistent good results. I went back to Canon, with a much better physical manual, as well as a very detailed on-line manual. And cheaper. I'm happy with my new Canon SX 620 HS. Caveat emptor.

I bought this as an upgrade for my son who gad a previous Sony superzoom that fell into the ocean. It was backordered a long time but worth the weight. Despite a small sensor, the images are great. Even when zoomed in there is virtually no barrel or ouncyshion and the images are incredibly sharp

We bought this to take with on vacation instead of our full size DSLR (Sony 3500) to cut down on weight. We took it out with the DSLR and took pictures side by side before we left and it was amazing how well it did! It was super light weight and everywhere we went it took great photos. Its not a full replacement for our DSLR but on the go and for traveling, not having to lug around a bunch of lenses really makes a huge difference.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great walk around camera-complimentary to my Mobile Phone
Reviewed in Canada on December 4, 2019
PRO: This is a great little slip in the pocket walk around camera with an amazing zoom. My Samsung Galaxy 10+ is just terrific but often there are situations that even my PRO setting on the phone cannot handle what I am wanting to capture. So out I whip the Sony and shoot in Manual mode. I'm a photojournalist and have the Canon Flagship DX 's cameras for studio, theater, sports events that the Sony could not handle. However I cannot carry the heavy gear around all the time plus its very intrusive for street shots and that's where the combination of my cell phone and this Sony comes into play. I can honestly say the image quality of th Sony and indeed my Galaxy 10+ are on a par with my pro cameras (I tested it) BUT but under the right circumstances. I can even shoot in RAW so post work in Lightroom/Photoshop dos not degrade the fnl image image. It has a wealth of functions that use to be found only in Pro-level cameras. The wireless wifi/Bluetooth network setting are a mist in today's world. I can instantly post to Instagram or the news room of various journals (my phone in hotspot mode). I can really recommend this camera.

CONS: Almost non. The on-off button is too small and difficult to turn on and off so instead of using it I pull up and out the electronic viewfinder and this switches on the camera and push back into the camera the EV when done. Faster and easier than using the on off button. I have seen complaints that the buttons and the control wheel are too small well lets remember this is a super compact camera with very advanced features.

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazing zoom and great pocket camera
Reviewed in Canada on September 20, 2021
I have own a version of this camera for a while, the DSC-H60, H80 and now HX99. The zoom on this camera has always been amazing and now comes with a dial disc that can be customizable for different functions. I use it for exposure time. In general it is a great camera, the zoom is really good and it is very portable. On the bad things, the auto settings for auto+ could be a bit better. Some times i need to adjust colour and exposure after having taken the shot. The camera is good for night shots when there is somewhat background lighting (i.e. nightshots on a city street at night) however its aperture of 3.5 wont let you get great quality pictures on very low light environments. It is an 18.2 megapixels camera, i think with the several iterations this camera has had they could have upped the pixels a little bit. But quality is good enough as it is though. In my opinion it is a bit pricey for the type of camera, but still i think it is a great purchase. I like to have it for a specific function which is very close up shots from far away. And an overall good alternative to my phone camera. It does this job very well. I recommend this product
