I like how it's constructed, feels nice and sturdy. I don't think it's DISGUSTINGLY overpriced either at $60, but you just have to know what you're buying. This mic is a great lapel mic, sure a little big, but not offensively so, given it's sensitivity, you can be a little more creative with where you're putting it as well. So if you're doing a recording where you're standing up but only getting a "bust shot" (chest and above), I feel like you could boost the gain a bit and place this under the camera line with decent results. Then in post pick out which parts of each track (since it is stereo) remove the bad parts and combine into a mono-track. Which is the nice thing about Stereo lapels.
In conclusion; I recommend it, if you're more serious about your recordings and still need a lapel. For the average person, nah. The ECM CM3 is a great $20 option that sounds good, little bigger, still stereo, but more affordable. This is more for the step above amateurs, but not full pro. Enthusiasts? I don't know what the inbetween would be. It's a great mic, great sound, a little pricey; saw that I picked up a pair of these at $50 and I think that's a better price for this product, but it might be discontinued by Sony so, that'll also increase the price. Good for enthusiasts, not good for amateurs, and not pro-grade. It does its job, does it well, and looks nice while doing it.
I bought this with my Kodak Zi8, and I thought it was going to be something I could use to record me without clipping on my shirt, but no... and that was my fault, but oh well.
This has good quality and I used it to record vocals on some songs I did, if you go to [...] then you can search for my A Day To Remember - If It Means Alot To You cover and it is a very capable small mic.
I used it for voicing over a few videos, and once I got a cable and plugged it into my computer so I could hold it and use it as a mic for a webstream.
VERY CAPABLE MIC!
The breakdown of issues in order of least to most severe:
1, It is very quiet. Maybe only 70% of the volume that came from the built-in mic that comes with the GOPRO.
2, Even with the muffler, it picks up any kind of wind and it overpowers the recording which makes it useless in an environment where there is any kind of air movement.
3, This one is the nail in the coffin: It makes a very audible buzzing sound and it doesn't stop. It's a like three or so buzzes, then a pause and then a few more and so on.
I probably could have dealt with the first two issues, but the constant buzzing is a deal breaker. I am sending this back for a refund.
