Probably the best $20 mic you will find

The mic has been very reliable so far. It does produce a fair amount of noise, but nothing comparable to using your camera's built in mic. It is omni-directional so it will pick up background noise in all directions. But as long as it is clipped to your shirt, the background noise will not over power your voice. It does pick up wind as well, but that can be reduced by clipping the mic backward (on the inside of your shirt) or buying a separate attachment for wind reduction.

Check the video for sound quality.

Update: I found that if I set the levels correctly, the amount of noise is much less using my Tascam DR-05 recorder. But I actually starting using Adobe Audition to remove the noise from the Audio. It takes less than a minute, and I find that I don't care to, or need to do any audio corrections after that. So the Sony mic, in addition to Adobe Audition's noise correction, has proved to be a winning combo for me. Couldn't be happier with the purchase.

The BEST low cost Lavalier microphone!

I recently did a video review of 3 different inexpensive Lavalier mics - this one, the Olympus ME15 and the Azden EX503.
The Sony was by far the best.

Here is what I liked about it:
- Sound quality for me was "good enough" In other words after I used it, I had no desire to look for something more expensive.
- Right angle plug - perfect for attaching to a small recorder and putting in a pocket - (I use a zoom H1)
- Short cord, but long enough. The cord I think is about 4 feet - that's plenty yo get from your shirt to your pocket.
- Stereo Mic - not a huge deal, but very convenient in that it avoids any needed follow up editing.
- LOUD - this was the loudest of the 3 mics I tested, this means that you will hear less noise with this mic vs the others.
- it requires some power, which the Zoom H1 provides and I believe most small voice recorders do as well. It does not work with the macbook pro's built in headphone jack, but I don't believe any of the mics do.

Why I bought this - I wanted to record myself giving a lecture, and I wanted something that I could put in my pocket and walk around the room with. The Zoom H1 is the perfect (small) size for that and it seems a lot of Video people are using them for just that purpose. To do the video, I recorded the video on an iPhone and the audio went to the Zoom H1. The iPhone is also recording sound. I brought the two together in Final Cut Pro, where there is a feature to synchronize the sound from the zoom with the sound from the iphone - at that point it was easy to shut off the sound on the iphone and just hear the mic through the zoom. No Audio processing was done, however I did have to compress the heck out of the video to get it to fit here on amazon, there is a less compressed version on that popular tube video site...

This is a Stereo microphone with two inputs (L & R). This microphone works nicely and records my voice with minimal background noise. The audio level is descent with some fine tuning. Feels like an economy microphone and it is plastic. But overall a good value for money.

This mic requires only the power provided from the line level (the 3.5mm jack). No need for batteries. Make sure you're connecting this to an output that provide that power.

I use this for making simple instructions videos and to do live commentary on my video games. I shall update this with a video review later.

This is a good value for money if you want to use 3.5mm microphones. You can step-up from here by using microphones with XLR interface, and although those are relatively cheap, you would need some sort of a sound card/audio recorder or a camcorder that has XLR input. You will also need to be wary about power requirement like Phantom Power, or battery power (some of those mics come with batteries in them!)

COMPATABILITY

Compatible out of the box with my Canon 6D. I added an extension cable ( C2G / Cables To Go 13787 3.5 mm M/F shielded Stereo Audio Extension Cable (6 Feet/1.82 Meters) to get more range!

Does not work directly with MacBook Pro. I got this to work with MacBook Pro 15 Retina by using a cheap adapter Mobile Phone Audio Splitter Cable with one 3.5mm Male (TRRS) and two 3.5mm (TRS) Female connectors, one for external 3.5mm Speaker and one for external 3.5mm Microphone by ZaxSound

UPDATE:
I have successfully used this with TASCAM DR-40 4-Track Portable Digital Recorder by using an XLR male to 3.5mm female adapter CamDesign Stereo 3.5mm Mini Female to Male XLR Audio Adaptor for Tascam recorder, Zoom H5N , Rode Videomic ,Videomic Pro , Sennheiser Mke400, Canon XA20 XA25 . However, you will have to set TASCAM DR-40 to Mic + Phantom Power. Do NOT use Phantom power with 1/4" male to 3.5mm adapter. This could damage your microphone. I think the adapter adapts phantom power to line power. Not sure.

Less than impressed!

I bought a rather elaborate wireless microphone system -- the kind with a single receiver and two transmitters that you could plug a lapel microphone into.

Though the kit I bought came with its own mic, I just happened to read the raving reviews about this one from Sony. I decided that perhaps I would purchase and use these instead of the ones that came with the microphone kit.

These are basically condenser microphones, which means they will pick up a lot more ambient noise than dynamic ones. I really should have taken that into consideration when I used them for a two-man interview this past week.

The microphones basically picked up a lot of ambient noise during the interview. In the end, I had to use a noise filter when editing my video to take out that excess sonance.

Perhaps this mic did exactly what it was designed to do. However, for the use of interview purposes, I think a microphone that concentrates more on a person's voice rather than the ambient noise in the room would be a better choice.

O MICROFONE É PERFEITO. para uso profissional, não sei dizer, eu uso para gravar aulas, para reuniões, para tudo e vejo como ficou a gravação depois, ele corta todo o ruído. OTIMO, RECOMENDO.

No different to a £1.50 cheap chinese mic

When I do recording I usually use a desktop yeti mic. However the acoustics can sometimes be a problem, as can positioning the mic unobtrusively when shooting video.

As a result I bought a cheap as chips Chinese mic, which cost me literally £1.50 shipped directly from China. It was very useful, so I ended up making more and more videos using it. The quality was not bad, but there was considerable room for improvement.

I did some research and this mic seemed to have positive reviews. Unfortunately I can safely say the quality of the mic is indistinguishable from the cheap one I bought. I recorded several sentences using both, both plugged directly into the same socket in my computer, held at the same distance from me. You literally cannot tell the difference.

And what's worse, is that the cheap one came with a pop filter (even though it's only a 1p piece of foam), *and* most importantly, it has a 3 segment connector WITH an adapter, which means I can plug it into my phone to record as well as my computer. This Sony mic just has a 2 segment connector, so you cannot plug it into your phone to record.

Considering the cable is around 30cm long, it means this microphone is virtually useless. If you want to walk around or sit more than 30cm away from your mic socket, you need to connect it to your phone, which you can't do without purchasing an adapter.

You're wasting your money on this mic. I've submitted a return. Save yourself some money and just buy a cheap chinese one for a couple of quid, it's much better in every respect.

Good mic, decent results when used with a homemade deadcat windshield, tucked underneath a cheek pad on my Arai motorcycle helmet and plugged into a Drift Ghost-S* video camera. Sensitive enough and seems ok up to around 50mph, haven't been able to go any faster yet due to typical London city traffic.. HEAPS better than a BOYA lavalier mic I bought on Amazon, which picked up wind noise and LOADS of vibration from the bike and roads, was barely useable. I highly recommend this Sony mic, spend the extra and don't bother with the cheaper alternatives if you intend to do anything where wind noise could be a factor.

*Word of warning, if you are indeed using a Drift Ghost camera, with the rear USB-door with the rubber ports for USB/3.5mm jack, the jack on this mic is L-shaped and not quite deep enough to plug into the camera properly. I had to butcher the plug a bit to remove the outer plastic, you'll probably want to do it properly instead and buy a 3.5mm plug that will fit into the port properly however!

This is a fantastic microphone, for not a lot of money.

I use it with a Zoom H1 audio recorder, old now, but does the job very well. Very sensitive, in fact it's very easy to over drive the H1 with this, but thats down to my noobiness with setting the input level incorrectly and not compensating - the mic is perfect.

I sometimes use it as a lapel mic if doing voice over or technical on-bench stuff, but I also use it kinda like a boom mic just out of camera shot for general audio recording when I'm talking to the camera.

It is a little susceptible to wind noise, but you can get those little foam wind shields and pop them over each end which helps a lot. Makes it a little bulkier, but it works, and if you use a small zip tie to hold them on, is pretty secure.

Would absolutely buy again.

Great value for the price

Don't buy headsets. You will be much happier with quality over the ear headphones and a separate microphone such as this.
Pros:
- Great value. Microphones of similar capture quality often cost 2-3 times as much.
- Good capture quality.
- Can record in stereo, although I don't use that feature, because it's my gaming/VOIP microphone. And the sound produced is not as clear as in mono mode. If you want a microphone for your camera you should look for higher grade ones, with better noise canceling.

Cons:
- The wire is too short and too thin. I have to use an extension cable to comfortably move around in my chair with it clipped on. If I lean to the side, the short wire stretches and microphones snaps off. Also the thin wire feels like it will snap at some point, it feels cheap and not sturdy enough for a clip on microphone. Build quality reflects the price so you might want to be extra careful not to break it.
- Not the greatest noise cancellation. Using software side noise cancellation somewhat helps but it still pick up a lot of ambient noise.
- Personally I would have preferred black finish. Silver one stands out too much with my black PC setup.

Overall I'm happy with this microphone. It's great value for what you get.
