This camera is big, forget about using it like a pocket cam, or even a traditional Handycam, it's about twice the size of the small Handycams, but it's 4K, so in theory, for this amount of resolution you would need like 4 of the smaller cameras to equal the resolution - this of course is a dramatization. The size though is much smaller then any other serious 4k camera, so don't mark it as a ding. I have owned a Red One original #1200, a BMC Cinema Camera, and several DSLR's. If your doing anything other then weight/size conscious shooting, not an issue, I can fit it in some purses I own.

It's menus are very Sony traditional, just like the previous three generations of top quality Sony camcorders, so if you have used one before, navigation is the same. It offers far more manual shooting control then any of the previous Sony's I have owned, Sony finally got this right for manual shooting "Pro Style". It uses the same camera batteries as the previous Sony's I own, believe it or not really the same battery in at least three generations, again bravo SONY.

The camera is made in China, I have never owned a flagship Sony camera made in China before, don't particularly know if that matters these days, but it's different to see made in China.

The lens is not as wide as my previous Sony's, it's close to 30mm the wide side. I think this is the most major flaw for my taste, thus the 4 instead of 5 star for me. Others may be fine without going so wide, but for me I find it limiting. The camera does have a 62mm threaded filter front ring, excellent for adapting lenses (more on that later). There are also several buttons and slider controls, yes tactile control for human interface, again bravo Sony.

The camera ships with a micro to HDMI cable.

The Sony FDR-AX100 is possibly the most anticipated camera of 2014. I was eagerly awaiting it for so long, and finally got it last week! I've had a long history with camcorders at my young age, and have had camcorders in possibly every single consumer format. I regret making the jump to HD so late (2008), so I knew I had to make the jump to 4K when possible, so I wouldn't regret it in the future.

To make a long story short, the AX100 is phenomenal. The construction and design of the camera is beautiful and very high quality. It's pretty heavy for its size, but for the footage it outputs, it's phenomanal. If you're used to older HDV cams, it won't bother you. The 3.5 LCD is beautiful, the OLED viewfinder is gorgeous, it has every possible manual control you could want (all of them being independent), comes with a free copy of Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum, and the WiFi function is pretty handy! Very easy to set up. The zoom rocker has fantastic control, and the manual zoom/focus ring is AMAZING. So smooth! Love that it has a manual dial like on the high end PJ/CX series, as well as a pro ring around the lense. I also love that besides the touch screen LCD, it has MANY physical buttons for the manual controls! So handy. This camera has almost everything!

The large 1" sensor and Carl Zeiss lense provides gorgeous photos (similar in quality to the RX series) and the 4K/UHD 2160p video is absolutely mind blowing. Beautiful shallow depth of field, but not too extreme. At 60mbps (can peak around 74), the footage is very clean and unbelievably sharp. The XAVC-S codec is very efficient. 2 hours and 15 minutes of 4k video on a 64gb SDXC card is amazing! I have never seen such sharp and beautiful images from a consumer or prosumer camcorder of this size and price in my life.

OVERVIEW
The Sony FDR-AX100/B is bigger than any other Handycam yet. It's big enough to look professional next to any consumer camcorder, yet not so big that it draws unwanted attention when you want to shoot without drawing undue attention. Chances are, if you're reading this review, you are an advanced videographer or perhaps considering this model for a low budget film or video production. If so, this camcorder is up to either task. This model is loaded with almost every dedicated button for manual control a professional could want. The only pro features lacking seem to be the full size HDMI, the XLR and SGI connectors along with double card slots. Otherwise, this camera will produce rock solid professional looking image quality in almost any situation. It should be noted that Sony is introducing a sister version of this camcorder in their professional line that adds XLR, SDI, full size HDMI and double card slots.

IMAGE QUALITY
Straight out of the box the camera is set to shoot in the 4K mode. In the hands of the average user, this camcorder is going to provide excellent video under most lighting conditions. The biggest problem shooting 4K will not be with this camcorder, but with the computer and software used for editing later on. Those who do not have a gaming quality computer power or 4K capable editing software are simply not going to be able to do much with the 4K capabilities of this camcorder until they upgrade their editing capabilities. For those who have the editing capability, this camcorder will knock your socks off with the amount of detail, clean grain free imaging, high dynamic range, smooth creamy bokeh and lack of lens artifacts, even when viewed on a 2K monitor.
