Superb image quality that rivals the best primes
Excellent contrast at high spatial frequencies means superb resolution even at F2.8. Two high-precision XA elements, two ED glass elements, two Super ED glass elements, and a floating focus mechanism control aberration, realize sharp, clear images at all zoom and aperture settings.
Small, light and versatile
This lens is the smallest and lightest F2.8 24-70mm zoom in its class. It weighs just 24.6 oz (695 g), over 20% less than the previous model. It is 16 mm shorter, and overall volume has been reduced by approximately 18%. Excellent mobility makes it a great choice for still or movie use.
Beautiful G Master bokeh
F2.8 bokeh extends throughout the zoom range thanks to advanced optics and a new 11blade aperture unit. Bokeh is enhanced by precise control of spherical aberration during both design and manufacture. Two precision XA elements suppress onion ring bokeh, ED glass elements prevent color bleeding.
Fast, precise AF and excellent response
Four of Sony’s original XD Linear Motors, a floating focus mechanism, and advanced lens control achieve fast, precise and quiet AF with excellent tracking. A new aperture unit also contributes to high speed, enabling full AF tracking performance with the aperture stopped down.
Excellent close-up performance
Minimum focusing distance is just 8.3” at 24 mm and 11.8” at 70 mm, with maximum magnification of 0.32x. Floating focus ensures ideal sharpness throughout the zoom range and at all focusing distances, while inner focus enables impressive close-up stills or movies where space is limited.
Video performance refined for visual creators
Advanced lens design reduces focus breathing, focus shift and axial shift when zooming. Image and angle of view shifts are minimized for smooth movie imagery. XD Linear Motors and a new aperture unit contribute to quiet, low-vibration operation.
Aperture ring, click/de-click and iris lock
An aperture ring provides direct, rapid control. The aperture ring click stops can be turned ON to provide tactile feedback when shooting stills, or OFF for smooth, silent control when shooting movies. There is also an iris lock switch that prevents the aperture ring from being accidentally moved.
Aberration controlled for superb images
Two spherical elements that use ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass, plus two more that use Super ED glass significantly reduce chromatic aberration for sharp reproduction without color bleeding.

This lens is so light that it helps my ARV's weight. It's definitely expensive and I could've gotten a Sigma for about $700 less but I wanted to make this my main lens so I might as well go big and the best.
If you're looking for a main lens, this one can't be beat. Of course the 70-200m is equally amazing and outright better for portrait and other things but it's too heavy...

My alternative considerations, as someone who has back problems and doesn’t like to carry around a lot if stuff or bulky/heavy stuff include:
Replacing with Sony GM 16-35 2.8 when they make version 2, or my Tamron 17-28 2.8. My telephoto needs are already fullfilled with light weight hassle free Tamron 70-300 4.5-6.3, and I wouldn’t have to carry my Voigtlander 15mm. For landscape/travel/wildlife, I rarely use 35-65mm focal range (maybe 10-20% of time, and I feel like I could make those pics work if I didn’t have that focal range). However, being able to go from wide to short telephoto without changing lenses is valuable.
Replacing with Tamron 28-200 2.8-5.6, and I could leave my Tamron 70-300 4.5-6.3 home. Lose some speed and quality for convenience. Seems liberating. But in practice will cause difficulty in the longer end capturing dawn/dusk (low light), getting sharp photos without tripod, birds/wildlife frozen in action (high shutter that low aperture enables), etc.
Tamron 35-150 2-2.8 very interesting, but too heavy (~67% heavier).
Tamron 28-75 2.8 I hear is comparable. Lighter and much cheaper. I would need to test. I might miss the 24mm and possibly snappy autofocus Sony-Sony has.
Sigma 24-70 2.8. Heavier, albeit cheaper. Too heavy for me.

Image quality and low light / speed capability superior. Great focal range from wide to short telephoto. I use mainly for landscape and travel. Great usability (buttons, placement, how it works with camera software). But, still heavy enough to be a burden to carry around everywhere if you are a minimalist. But, it’ll have to do if you want that range with low light and speed. The hood drives me nuts. Difficult to put on, always a hassle.
