5.0 out of 5 stars Dream lens for astrophotography with a Sony a7 III
By Mark & Jen on November 24, 2020
Certainly the most expensive lens I've ever purchased, by far, but I've found it worth every penny as soon as I saw the results with astrophotography. It's so crisp and sharp edge to edge, no crazy coma or chromatic aberrations to deal with, even at the extreme 12mm which allows you to get so much of the Milky Way in frame per my photos. It's also built like a tank. I dropped it hard once and the built in metal lens hood took a hit hard enough to dent it but the lens still performs flawlessly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing lens
By Thomas Anderson on March 16, 2021
I bought it along with A7RIV as I'm primarily interested in landscape photography. The camera is a beast and the 12-24 mm GM 2.8 lens is another beast. I'm thoroughly amazed. You could go to any interesting areas and get stunning results. You can come home and can relive the whole hiking or adventure experience. Its impressive to print them in poster sizes. With this resolution, you can zoom into the pictures and be amazed at the level of details. With the level of resolution of A7RIV you can crop a lot and still get a good picture. The combination is a lot of money however. The front element of the lens needs to be carefully maintained as any defects will appear magnified

5.0 out of 5 stars The ultimate superwide landscape/adventure lens
By NateintheWild on August 14, 2020
For years the Sony Alpha lineup has been driving a revolution in the camera industry. Unprecedented advances in camera technology drove the brand to the forefront of innovation and sales, but most of the lens releases have been designed to fill the standard lens quiver expected of a major camera brand. While lenses like the 16-35mm GM and 24-70mm GM are spectacular, they’re truly just the Sony iteration of a classic lens, and many of us have been waiting expectantly for Sony to turn their revolutionary engineers loose into the lens design world.

Enter: the brand new 12-24mm f/2.8 GM. The first full-frame 12-24mm f/2.8 lens ever, it not only outstrips the competition in focal length and aperture, but comes in significantly lighter than any similar lens on the market. This lens is a true marvel of optical engineering, and I hope this is an indicator that future lens releases will continue down this path.

My first thought when I heard 12mm at f/2.8 was "horrible vignette?" and I'm very pleased to announce that's not the case. There is some vignette, sure, just about universal for lenses at this focal length, but it's both manageable and palatable as well as quickly dispatched by stopping down.

The lens is fantastically sharp, even wide open. The extreme aspherical elements create beautiful, rectilinear image projections with nearly no distortion at all, and the pixel stretching in the corners (unavoidable with rectilinear lenses) to me looks like an artistic benefit rather than a detraction.

The Sony Nano AR coating proves again to be an incredible advancement, and you can see in my 6th photo above that even shooting directly into the sun there is almost no flare or ghosting at all.

There are dozens of detailed reviews online so I won't go too deep into the technical details here on Amazon, but the real reason you're here reading reviews is to figure out if this is a lens you want to buy. I'm happy to tell you that yes, you do. If you fancy yourself a fan of wide-angle lenses for landscapes, astro, adventure, or action photography then this is an absolute must have for your quiver.

5.0 out of 5 stars Revolutionary wide angle beast
By Autumn Schrock on August 18, 2020
I think most photographers have been waiting for a lens with these specs for some time. Sony upped the game by creating the first 12-24mm f/2.8 lens EVER. I was initially a little worried about distortion and vignetting with such a wide lens, but they're both actually pretty minimal even wide open at 12mm.

It should come as no surprise that this lens produces top image quality given that it's part of Sony's G Master lineup. Images are impressively sharp wide open at f/2.8 and obviously sharpness increases a bit by stopping down.

Sony's new Nano AR II coating does an amazing job at removing ghosting and flares when shooting in difficult lighting. I was shocked at the clarity and contrast in my images when shooting into the sun.

Astrophotography with this lens is a DREAM. There are very few lens imperfections; stars are sharp white dots from center to corners, which made me a very happy astro shooter. It's pretty incredible to be able to use a 20 second shutter speed without seeing any star trails.

As a Sony Alpha Imaging Collective Member, I've been fortunate enough to use just about every G Master lens created, and this has become one of my favorites. Overall it completes my Sony G Master zoom trio from 12mm-200mm, and I highly recommend it if you're in the market for a fast, wide zoom.
