Great combination of size / weight / image quality. I also think it just has a nice design.
While I will say that the image quality is spectacular, it depends what you’re used to. My Leica APO Summicron glass legitimately blows this away, but the price differences make them non-comparable. If I had to critique it from the actual best FF 35mm in the world:
- the transition area just outside the DoF looks a more like some sort of optical aberration rather than simply going out of focus
- mild CA and softness visible wide open at closer ranges
- mild CA in high contrast areas (think tree branches) at larger apertures
- I wish it had deeper micro contrast
Honestly, none of this really matters. This is what you’ll find if you go pixel peeping, which I know a lot of users of this lens will do. Ultimately, if you make any photos with this you don’t love, it will never be the lens’s fault.
(Also yes I’ve seen the DXO reviews and have no idea what they’re smoki… er, doing. I currently own both lenses along with an A7RIVa and SL2, sitting in front of me, and have tested them back and forth. Multiple copies of the Leica prove consistent.)
