1920x1080 Full HD 24p/60p w/9.2MP Exmor R CMOS Sensor

Create cinematic video in high definition 1920 x 1080 24p/60p and high quality 9.2MP still images. Experience stunning low-light sensitivity with improved image clarity and drastically reduced grain with Sony’s back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor. Designed for compact cameras and camcorders, the Exmor R CMOS sensor relocates the photo diodes above the support circuitry, maximizing the light gathering area per pixel so you can shoot with better results in lower lighting conditions.

Balanced Optical SteadyShot image stabilization

On standard Optical SteadyShot camcorders a single “shift lens” is moved in the optical block to offset camera shake. Balanced Optical SteadyShot w/ Active Mode moves the entire optical block at once, maintaining the integrity of the optical path and reducing shake. It also reduces vignetting (light falloff towards the edge of a scene) and lowers distortion in videos and still photos.

30x Optical/60x Clear Image Zoom to get even closer to the action

Get amazingly close with 30x optical zoom plus 60x Clear Image digital zoom. Most digital zooms use electronic cropping to get closer to the subject, resulting in unsharp images. Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
Last Year's Sony HDR-PJ430 was the #1 Pro Consumer Video Camcorder on the Market. This Sony HDR-PJ540 is the 2014 upgrade to that model. And it got even better!!!

Last year, I wrote a review to showcase all the top features that made the HDR-PJ430 a better choice than Canon, Samsung and Toshiba's top consumer models. Now for 2014, Sony gave us the TOP FEATURE we all wanted in the 430, but couldn't have. This is big news! I see that now Sony has created the perfect consumer video camera with the 540

REASON #1 -- THE SONY 540 HAS A PROJECTOR THAT WILL SHOW ANY VIDEOS!!!! Previous model years would only project videos recorded by the camcorder. Any video taken off the camcorder and loaded back (such as after editing) would not project. Sony finally listened up and gave us a true video projector in a camcorder. And I love it!

REASON # 2 -- TO MAKE THIS PROJECTOR CAMERA even better, the camera can be hooked up to any video source (DVD player, Blu-Ray player, PC, smartphone, tablet) with an HDMI out and project videos from it! NOW WE TRULY HAVE A PROJECTOR IN A VIDEO CAMCORDER!!!

The following "7 Reasons why this is the TOP consumer camcoder on the market" comes from last year's review of Sony's 430 model. None of these reasons have changed. The 540 has all of these features, plus #1 and #2. If you are shopping for a new video camera, this is the best choice for so many reasons.

Hands down, this is an excellent camera and has all the features that any person will use... and more! I'll keep this review short and to the point - giving you everything you need to know to decide if this camcorder is for you. Everything short of watching video samples online.

Verified Purchase
I did a lot of search as everyone before buying my first camcorder and I decided to wait for this sony new release... I bought it on the first day.
I had 2 problems with this camcorder and then I decided to return it back!
FIRST PROBLEM
Recording in the 60p mode was associated with a lot of sound delay and interruption. Recording in 24 and 60i was perfectly fine. I called Sony customer service (very helpful by the way) and we spent almost 90 min over the phone. We tried different solutions...my graphic card was OK, we installed the Sony play memories software and we tried to play videos on it and this didn't solve the problem. At the end the tech gave up and asked me to be referred to an expert.
SECOND PROBLEM
I couldn't use the wifi option to transfer data. Sony tech tried with me as well and we failed. My smart phone is android based.

Here's my review
IMAGE QUALITY (4.5/5)--- very good is day light.
LOW LIGHT IMAGE QUALITY (1/5)--- really sucks. It's grainy and i can't find a huge difference between my smart phone videos quality and this camcorder videos in low light. Low light to me was indoor with lights turned on or outdoor in street light.
ZOOM (5/5)-- impressive.
IMAGE STABILIZATION (5/5)--- impressive.
TOUCH SCREEN (3/5)--- I'm not sure if it will live long. I feel it's cheap when I compare it to a canon touch screen.
LCD --- as any LCD screen, the picture gets washed out in day light. you need a hood or external eye piece
SOUND (2/5)--- you really need an external mic for this camcorder.. sound was bad outdoor without any wind.

We are huge Sony fans, but this camcorder tests our loyalty. We use several Handicams to shoot b-roll footage and to keep at hand for when something interesting occurs during our travels. We make frequent use of Sony's pistol grip/triods with controls and well as Sony pan arms adapted to our Sachtler and Miller tripods for our Z5U cameras. Since these camcorders get hard use in the field, they occasionally get destroyed, hence the purchase of the PJ540. We primarily bought the PJ540 is because it was the lowest price Sony with specs we needed and had threads for mounting filters (now 46mm rather than 37mm) and shades and covers. Update #1 Under 'Accessories on the Sony website' an adapter cable is shown that allows tripod control devices with the d-shaped connector to be used with the new micro-USB on new Sony camcorders. One problem: Sony's tripod control devices don't work with the new camcorders despite being listed as accessories. (Update: this has since been remedied with a new grip/tripod now offered, but now owners of multiple Handicams will need two grip/tripods if adding any of the newer models to their equipment stockpiles)The picture quality is excellent for such a small sensor. The zoom control has a great, smooth feel and the variable zoom linear speed is pro quality.
One thing that is fun is to point the camera at your face and watch the lens track you as you move the camera body side to side and up and down. (Shades of HAL 9000) Optical stabilization hard at work. The image stabilization can be tricked by moving water (river, inlet, etc) and the lens will begin to drift, so beware and watch what's happening on the display.
So, the images look great and the projector feature is a nice novelty.
