There is a classic, sleek look about this radio that really catches your eye. Three knobs, no more, no less: volume; tuning; and tone control. There is also a single speaker that does the job well, so mono fans rejoice.
Now, when it comes to tuning, there are better radios out there. With the antenna provided, I get just about every FM station I want, but the internal AM tuner is a bit less satisfying; I have to shift and turn the radio to pick up certain stations... and that wouldn't sit well with AM devotees. I primarilly use this radio with my XM tuner, though, so I never have any reception issues; that is, unless I stop paying the bill.
The clock is easy to set, but the unit lacks battery back up, something that can be a bit annoying with power outtages. Oh, and the light is a bit on the bright side but it doubles as a faint nightlight if you have need for such a thing.
Overall I really like this radio. I even bought a second one when the price dropped to $49.
Update 4/8/2010 - I have taken to using this radio as a portable speaker for my iPod... and the results are wonderful. I can drop it in a bag and later take it out when I get to the hotel where I'm staying. Since the radio has a line-in function, all it takes is a connection cord and you're good to go, which makes this another nice feature about this radio. And probably cheaper than buying one of those inferior portable speakers they advertise for iPods.

The initial reviews of the Sony ICF-M1000 when it first went to market weren't very favorable, at least by audiophile standards. But with a substantial price drop to around $50.00 (from $150.00 or more), the radio you get now is heads above anything at this price. I bought one through Amazon and have had it for about a week.
The radio looks fine, has firm, smooth operating controls (actually very classy), surprisingly basic operations and a very fine sound and reception sensitivity. Ideally, one might have prefered separate treble and bass knobs, but the single tone knob works well enough. It sounds better than all my single speaker radios, including a GE Superadio III and an old Panasonic RF2200.
Reception (both FM and AM) is simply outstanding with the clearest hiss-free sound of any radio I own. The FM antenna is in the power cord, so positioning the cord can effect reception. Because the radio has an internal ferrite AM antenna, weak AM stations can be boosted significantly with a Terk Passive AM-1000 antenna just placed next to side of the radio and tuned to the station frequency. I have the radio in the basement to listen to FM transmitted from my XM radio upstairs--this works fine. Even in the basement without any additional antenna, the AM reception is very clear and clean at night.
Happy with the purchase.

Listening to my local FM jazz & reggae station, the depth of sound is amazing! A finely engineered product. I agree with another reviewer that this radio performs well, without being cluttered with alarm clock, cd player, extra speaker, etc. It does have plenty of input/output plugs, however, if you do want to extend the system (stereo headphone out, aux-in, line-out, external FM antenna connector). Sometimes less is more. Too bad Sony discontinued it (but glad for the price-reduction!)
If you prefer digital tuning, the Sony is a great choice. If you would rather have analog tuning, the Sangean WR-1 is the way to go.
Please note: As another reviewer mentioned, there is a little switch on the back of the radio that says: FM Antenna, Internal / External. It is actually counter to expectations to switch it to External (without actually attaching an external antenna). Instant great reception! No external antenna needed, just slide the switch to External. Try it both ways and see the difference. Also experiment with how you run the power cord (and extension cord), which seems to act like an antenna.

This radio appears to have been designed to compete with the Tivoli Model One, the Music Hall RDR, and other high end mono table radios. As a long time radio nut, I actually have both of those - as well as others - and this simple, elegant Sony outperforms all of them in some areas, and is competitive in others. Sound quality is a matter of taste, of course. The Sony has clear, powerful sound which tends to "warmth," which I find to be very listenable for long periods. The RDR, by comparison, has a more full range sound and slightly better bass, but sounds more like a miniature home entertainment system. The Tivoli has inferior sound, IMO, in all aspects.
But where the Sony really excels beyond every other table radio I've tried is its tuner. It picks up stations none of my other radios can, and this without attaching an external antenna. Tuning is nicely tactile, an interesting combination of digital and analogue. I personally love the prismatic display, and the piano black finish is easy on the eyes. This product was an easy five star rating, especially at the current price.
