Jun 17, 2022 - well ... these were with my laptop for two years give or take a month or two (about 22 months) ... never went outside more than once while i was waiting for another pair of headphones to arrive ... today they started acting really wonky (only the left side worked ... then sometimes only the right) ... now IF i am lucky only the left side works but when i thought it was the device or adapter I was using going bad ... it turns out it was these headphones SUDDENLY not working .... feel with the use case i had and being inside and protected they should have lasted longer than this ....
One pair of cheap priced Sony headphones lasted me from April 2013 to Sept 2021 ... these while being a different model that failed me ... is the second Sony pair that lasted less then 2 years .... BUT unlike the other ones it at least lasted longer then a single year.
I do love the memory foam earpads i put on these and will be reusing them somewhere else.
Early June 2022: still loving these with the new pads and despite (I cant remember if they seemed a little "tight" when i first got them a few years ago i think it was) ... but now they seem "loose" but ... at my PC .... they are a-ok and if i see a deal on these i like ... I will totally buy them again just to have a backup pair at least (and yes the memory foam pads is one of the reasons i love these so much)
Feb 2022: loving the new memory foam earpads I have put on these and while I wouldn't (esp with the build quality for that price) pay the say $35 + tax I have seen these go for, I also say I got a steal at $9.99 + tax for a "used-like new" open box of these ... they could be better but with a light U to V EQ these sound great, and I use them daily ...
NOT to get off topic but I do have a new pair of the "MZX 110's" from Sony about a month and a half old now and they are 100% tuned differently then they use to be (I have older pairs and the new pair without EXTRA EQ help sounds a bit muddy ... i mean none of the Sonys in this price range are audiphile stuff, but even for what I expected, they sounded muddy, but I EQ'd them to a point i like now.... I mention ALL of that due to some other reviewers saying some models sound different possibly based on color of the plastic ... that doesn't make sense to me HOWEVER i have experienced new pairs of the same models not sounding as good as pairs from years ago
April 2021 Update: I have to say even i am shocked (not reading my entire review) at the first line I wrote about the sound. I am not going to say the sound will please an audiophile but comparing them to other headphones and admitting I "EQ" my audio no matter the headphones to get the best sound ... sometimes I feel other headphones have better base or better treble but going back to these after that ... I think these are WELL balanced when EQ'd "just right" ... I am someone who rather have good balanced sound across the board vs "great highs/treble" but say "meh" lows and mids or something.
While not in the worst shape, I finally decided to replace the slightly flaking pads while keeping them for possible other headphones down the road... they are not bad but I replaced them this month with Geekria Earpads that remind me of the earpads on my Samson SR850's but softer. The only issue is (I am pretty sure I did it) i slightly ripped a part of the right pad when putting it on, but oh boy are they better than the default pads on these headphones. I am not sure if i said it in my intial review but not being ultra picky and noting cheaper Sony's have better default pads ... I had to add extra foam inside the default pads and had been using them this way for the entire time until these new pads came this week.
One last thing I can think of ... I remember thinking these had some clamping force when i first got them and I see I mentioned these "hurt" after awhile (I had an update saying what I am now, in a more long-winded way, but i removed that to clean up the review)... now I cant say they fall off my head but .. they REALLY stretched out .. i mean that doesn't truely sound right ... they just sort of "sit" on my head .. whatever clamping force was there before when these were more new... doesn't exist anymore and is no problem
-------
These are based on using the Sony MDRV150 for about a day now and testing it on my laptop with media player EQ's set as I usually set them and also some of my Sony/Sansa Mp3 players with the same idea ... EQ and sound settings set to where I usually would have them
My experience: I have to note that I have had experience with two pairs of Sony MDRZX100's and two pairs of Sony MDRZX110's (one losing all sound on the right side, is why I picked up these MDRV150's).
My First impressions:
Build - for the price point, I like these. Of course it's not going to be top-of-the-line material but the cable is thick and the wire DOESN'T feel cheap or anything .. the part where the headphones connect to the earcups seems like the MDRZX100's which seem to have more "support" than the 110's do (what I think happened to my 110's that broke after 2 years).
Sound - oh boy ... this is strange .... I .... I am not happy with the sound. It depends on the song/genre really but no matter what I do to adjust say the EQ settings ... the mids or the highs (I cant tell ... Mids I think, but maybe both) seem muddy/muffled/too low. I mean I wouldn't use the other model headphones I like (mentioned already), without setting the EQ on the device, but these while not terrible, made me go "oh :( ... I expected more" ... it's like ... it doesn't feel as "air-y" as the 100's or 110's I have ... not like reverb wise but just like these are regular speakers I am listening to with something in the way of me and said-speaker.... again I do admit I sit back down, listen to a song, and go "eh ... these are not bad".
Unlike some headphones I have tried from other brands, the bass is good and strong WITHOUT being overpowering ... it's not the bass being too high that is effecting the mids and maybe highs being too low ... THEY ARE just too low
Something I also have to mention is that I got these to replace my "110's" but I did have another backup pair of 110s and trying them on the same device with the same settings, the 110's ironically do sound better but doing a "side by side" comparison ... even the same song at the time ... they didn't sound "that far" off from each other... it's in the same "ballpark"
Comfort: These do "hurt" after awhile but I do remember on my first pair of this type of headphone ... the 100's I mentioned, I had the same issue and then it wasn't really a problem as they loosened up or something. I just have to pull up at each side to give my "ear a chance to breath" for a second or two and then it's not bad ... I suppose "they could have padded the earcups a tad better" may be the case, but these aren't the most comfortable NOR the most painful or something.
Overall my thoughts/still first impressions:
I am not sure I'd get these again, but I do admit ... despite that sound issue ... I am PROBABLY not likely to return these. I am happy with the build quality and I DID get these for $11.99 vs most other sellers in say the $20-$25+ range... if i paid that much for them, then I would think about returning them more, but unless these break or do something strange before the return window closes, I am probably keeping them ...
I think I should return them, but I keep going back to the "they are not what I expected SOUND wise, but eh they are not bad" too much to send them back.
-------------------------
I bumped the rating from 3/3.5 out of 5 stars to 4 out of 5 stars. Happy I got them for basically 1/2 of the cheapest price I am seeing them for now ... $25.99 or higher, is the cheapest I have seen these for currently and I snagged them in "used - Like New" for $11.99
it also came with its own adapter to plug in to the computer or a stereo type plug.
typical Sony value and sound
=========
I remember when I first decided I wanted, needed V150's. I first took serious notice of them in early 2007. I was perusing Rock Records in The Loop, a music store whose longevity is nothing short of a miracle in the sky-high rent neighborhood of Chicago's business district. I already owned a pricey pair of Koss, but they were so quiet they were hard to hear sometimes, and so heavy that wearing them gave me headaches. Then there's the pair of RadioShack 1225's I had recently bought, a lucky find whose quality defied their relatively generic brand name and $25 price tag. The 1225's extra appeal was individual volume controls for each cup, which allows you to isolate pans. But they made me look like Princess Leia, and the cable was really short.
I normally scoff at Sony's inflated brand value, which I'm convinced is the reason for their ridiculously high prices on most technologies available cheaper from other manufacturers at comparable quality. But the MDR-V150's caught my eye and held it. They were smaller than the massive cans I was wearing at that moment, which looked like boxing gloves hanging around my neck when I slid them back off my ears. And the Sonys were only $20. But even that was an unjustifiable splurge in my undergraduate, big city poverty, and counting the earbuds that came with my iPod, I already had three other pair (which wasn't really a reason not to buy them; indeed, I needed the new pair to solve a problem created by the others. But non-understanders would argue this point).
I held off that day. But last summer, when my girlfriend and I were getting ready to leave for France, she bought a pair of MDR-V150's at retail from Best Buy. Jealous and eager to spite her by doing better, I found a new pair on Amazon for about $15 and bought them impulsively. I went to her to gloat, then returned to the computer and bought a used pair on eBay for $6.
I took the used pair to France, leaving the new ones at home as a back-up. (I like to have two of everything I like. Ever since I was little, I've been afraid of my finer stuff breaking and having to settle for an inferior replacement because the original is no longer available.) The used pair didn't make it all the way through the adventure, but I'll be damned if they didn't sound rich and heavy like dark chocolate cake, and they worked long after their first several breaks.
Audio experts and studio monkeys will tell you (and have told me) that the MDR-V150's are lacking in high-end response and that, consequently, they are too bass-heavy. I set my iPod's EQ to "treble boost" and was satisfied with the compromise.
I recommend them to you without reservation.

I particularly enjoy the detailed mid range on these. The bass is there but not overpowering. The high end could maybe be better but honestly for the money there is nothing to complain about here. They hit above their price range for sure. I bought them as budget DJ headphones and am also finding myself taking them out with me for general music listening so this says a lot. I have another set of Sony headphones that go for twice the price and these are honestly better. They get plenty loud too!
The built quality is good but you must be careful not to damage the swivel brackets.
The headband is not padded but the headphones are very comfortable to wear.
The sound quality is above average for the price paid and there a resonable depth of base.
This Sony product is an excellent purchase for a cheap pair of headphones.
Note: - The white pair are a better product than the black pair.
Nowdays I use earphones all the time, as they leak less sound and are more portable, but I still use these headphones in my piano. They have the best sound quality in my piano compared to every other earphones/headphones I have ever tried out!
I myself don't actually use it for its intended purpose and damage it much quicker than it should wear over time so I can't really gauge if it is durable. However, abusing it by listening to music on my smartphone whilst shoving it in either my jacket pockets or my jeans pockets lasts about 6 months, which is a lot to me especially considering the price.
