I am not an audiophile by any stretch. I have several sets of headphones and my favorite are the Sony MDR 7506 and V-Moda. I have been using a set of JVC which according to the reviews, are comparable to the Bose Quiet Comfort. What attracted me to these Sony headphones was the claim of 99.4% ambient noise reduction. Moreover, I like the single detachable cord plus the AAA battery. This eliminates the headphones going dead on a long flight or having forgotten to charge them prior to departure. Moreover, even if you don't have a AAA battery available you can still use them. In short they are everything I have ever wanted in a set of headphones plus they sound great! They are as every bit as crisp as the MDR 7506 and extremely comfortable. I bought them at Costco for $179.00 plus tax. A real steal!

I bought these since they were a lot cheaper and similar to the more premium MDR 1R and MDR 1R MK2. I wanted to compare the MDR 1R and MDR 10R myself for fit and sound quality since there are not a lot of reviews comparing them.

For the price, the MDR 10R is one stylish looking headphones and more than decent build quality although its mostly plastic. These are a bit lighter than the MDR 1R MK2, but I felt the fit of the 1R was better for me since I have comparatively larger ears. The cushion is very different between the two. The MDR 1R is also a bit larger but comes in a relatively better packaging with 3 cables as opposed to 2 for the 10R.

I 1st tried the 10R and they sounded good until I tried the 1R. The 1R simply blows the 10R in every aspect. The 10R has pretty good bass but that's just about it. As other reviewers pointed out, the mids and treble were terribly lacking and they sound very distant. The Bass simply over powers everything else. On the other hand, the 1R has more balanced sound, a tad less bass than what I would like, but definitely more balanced sound with very detailed mids and highs. The 1R tends to be more spread-out, while 10R feels more congested.

Its obvious that the 1R sounds better than the 10R, but I was amazed by the amount of difference you will notice. If you have the money, I would strongly recommend buying the 1R. There are a lot of headphones in the same price range as the 10R which sound much better, but I can definitely say that may be only few might fit as good as the 10Rs. Thats one aspect, where I feel Sony nailed it.

I really like these. First, they are extremely comfortable. I wore them yesterday for 4 hours reading, and no fatigue at all. I'm usually sensitive to such things, so that impressed me. Also, the sound clarity is amazing. I am no audiophile, but I hear things in songs that I don't usually hear. Listening to Diamond's Holly Holy was something else. And the Rolling Stones You Can't Always Get What You Want is truly spectacular. There are, however, two downsides that should give you caution. First, the drivers aren't terribly efficient. This means that if you're using a smartphone, it might not be quite loud enough for you. I listen to music relatively loudly, but even when I have the volume turned all the way up it's not always quite loud enough. This is especially the case on the subway, for instance. It works well enough, but it should be better. I shouldn't have to have the volume all the way up during my commute. Second, despite Sony's claims about bass, there isn't much bass. Bassheads definitely will hate these. But even for a lot of popular music, these don't quite work. The problem is that bass is just too subtle and underwhelming, and sometimes makes songs sound odd because of the lack of bass. So just keep in mind that these really don't do the best job with bass. I mostly listen to rap music and these remain tolerable= and I enjoy them. But for a lot of people than want even minimal to moderate thump, these aren't those cans. I am keeping these Sonys because there just ins't much on the market that's as good. And since I spend so much time commuting, the comfort of these win out in the end. They really are delightful on the noggin. Here are all the other headphones I have tried: Beats are overpriced crap.Read more ›

These sounded good but then we lost the cable that connects them to a Phone or any sounds. You would this it would be a standard headphone cable but it is not. The cable is $50 or $70 dollars depending on which one you get and the size it just a smidge different than a standard cable. That is just crappy so get different headphones.

From a Forum "The diameter of the plastic sheath immediately to the left (in the picture) of the connector itself is smaller on the headphone end than it is on the device end. The device end is colored light gray and too thick to fit into the headphone, because the jack is recessed behind a hole that only accommodates for the correct end of the cable. This is to prevent users from accidentally connecting the device end of the cable to the headphone, which makes an awkward connection at the headphone, and in the case of the inline remote cable, the inline remote will end up close to the device end.
I think this is a bad design because replacement cables will be near impossible to find and it won't be possible to use cables from Beats headphones that have inline volume controls for iPods and iPhones."
