For the price, the MDR 10R is one stylish looking headphones and more than decent build quality although its mostly plastic. These are a bit lighter than the MDR 1R MK2, but I felt the fit of the 1R was better for me since I have comparatively larger ears. The cushion is very different between the two. The MDR 1R is also a bit larger but comes in a relatively better packaging with 3 cables as opposed to 2 for the 10R.
I 1st tried the 10R and they sounded good until I tried the 1R. The 1R simply blows the 10R in every aspect. The 10R has pretty good bass but that's just about it. As other reviewers pointed out, the mids and treble were terribly lacking and they sound very distant. The Bass simply over powers everything else. On the other hand, the 1R has more balanced sound, a tad less bass than what I would like, but definitely more balanced sound with very detailed mids and highs. The 1R tends to be more spread-out, while 10R feels more congested.
Its obvious that the 1R sounds better than the 10R, but I was amazed by the amount of difference you will notice. If you have the money, I would strongly recommend buying the 1R. There are a lot of headphones in the same price range as the 10R which sound much better, but I can definitely say that may be only few might fit as good as the 10Rs. Thats one aspect, where I feel Sony nailed it.
From a Forum "The diameter of the plastic sheath immediately to the left (in the picture) of the connector itself is smaller on the headphone end than it is on the device end. The device end is colored light gray and too thick to fit into the headphone, because the jack is recessed behind a hole that only accommodates for the correct end of the cable. This is to prevent users from accidentally connecting the device end of the cable to the headphone, which makes an awkward connection at the headphone, and in the case of the inline remote cable, the inline remote will end up close to the device end.
I think this is a bad design because replacement cables will be near impossible to find and it won't be possible to use cables from Beats headphones that have inline volume controls for iPods and iPhones."
