Noise Canceling Technology
Noise canceling headphones reduce ambient noise to provide a quieter environment for audio entertainment. The headphones have an inside microphone on each earpiece that works with electronic circuitry to create oppositely phased sound waves that reduce, or phase out, the ambient noise sound waves.
The MDR-NC7 reduce up to 87.4% (9 dB at 300 Hz) of ambient noise when the noise canceling circuit is switched on, ideal for loud, noisy environments like planes, buses, dorms, etc.
Listen With or Without Noise Reduction
Convenient dual-use capability gives you the option of listening to your music with or without the noise cancelation feature, so you can enjoy unaffected music in quiet environments. This also allows you to keep using your headphones (minus noise reduction) when the batteries run dry.
Many of the noise canceling headphones out there are earbuds; these are ideal for someone who prefers an external phone. The phones rest gently on your ear, with an adjustable headband to get a good fit. And good sound--a neodymium magnet provides excellent power-handling, and 30-millimeter drivers deliver quality sound with a frequency response of 20 Hz - 30 kHz.
Ready for Travel
The MDR-NC7's noise reduction is powered by a single AAA battery, and when not in use the phones feature a foldable, swivel design. Fold small and compact and slip into the included carry pouch and you're good to go. An airplane adapter is also included for in-flight entertainment (stereo or dual jack).

Top customer reviews
Price = 5/5. I'm happy with the price.
Comfort = 2/5. They make my ears feel hot and I have to take them off after 30-45 mins of use and take a 5-minute break. Also, the middle top which rests on top of your head, is hard plastic and curves down a bit. This might cause some discomfort for some as well but does not bother me.
Sound Quality = 2/5. The highs are okay and the lows are lacking. Seems to have more bass with the noise cancellation on.
Noise Cancellation = 3/5. I have tried my a pair of Bose before and these ones do not work quite as well. However, they did cancel out a lot of the repetitive noises like fans/vents/refrigerators. However, a cough or a loud co-worker will still come through at lower volumes. Sometimes an electronic noise can be heard at low volumes or during a quiet part of the song. This hasn't been too bad but I have noticed it.
Accessories = 4/5. Includes a AAA battery, a carrying pouch (fabric) and an airplane adapter.
Overall = 3/5. If you have the budget, maybe go up to the next price range. If you don't mind the discomfort/pressure of the headphone against your ear, this might not be an issue. The product does work as advertised which is to cancel outside noise and also isolate environment noise as well. Also, because the product is made to be stored, there are a lot of hinges and joints that make the product change shape. This is not an issue when worn on the head.
Would I buy these again... yes.. in a heartbeat!
After looking at reviews, I decided to try the NC7 instead of the newer NC8. Price was still decent and although I was hesitant to get it from a 3rd party seller, I gave it a go.
At home, I tried them out. Sound quality was pretty good (I'm no audiophile and in any case, this are NOT headphones for an audiophile), but I could not even notice the noise cancelling feature - it seemed non existent. The NC6 had a louder hiss noise when the NC is activated. On the NC7 you could barely hear it.
But on the airplane, the NC feature did work. Not as good as the NC6 (and hence one star taken off) but it did work. You do need to make sure you have a loud source as well. The first movie I watched had a low sound (an old rip attempt from a few years ago was probably the cause) and I had to adjust the headphones and almost push them into my ears to shut out the external noise. But when the second movie started, which had a proper sound and loud enough to remove all external noise, it was a much better experience. I did tested by turning the NC feature on and off and you could notice the difference so NC does work.
After two movies in a row, it was bothering my ears a little bit, specially on the first flight which I watched the low sound movie and kept pressing it to my ears. Overall pretty comfortable even when used for 5 hours.
BTW, battery life is still working good after 10 hours of use.
Will keep them. But if I would fly often, I would spend the $200+ on a pair of Bose.
