First look summary from DPReview

DPReview First Look
The Sony a9 is the company's fastest camera to date in nearly every way. The incredible burst speed combined with the complete lack of viewfinder blackout should make it not only an extremely capable sports photography machine. Sony's sensor technology should also promise great overall image quality and low light performance, and the oversampled 4K video looks to be impressively detailed.

The a9 can shoot high-speed bursts without any viewfinder blackout, and for many, the ability to see just the right moment as you're capturing it will be a revelation. In terms of video, the lack of log gamma, Picture Profiles and usable touchscreen implementation is a shame, particularly so given the a9's incredibly detailed 4K. I'm looking most forward to using the a9 for weddings and events as well as more sports-oriented work to see how it stacks up.

The a9 showcases the true potential of mirrorless: an uninterrupted feed of the action in bursts, something no DSLR can claim. The live feed also means uninterrupted focus measurements (60 times a second), meaning the camera rarely misses focus due to incorrect prediction of subject motion. Meanwhile, pro-level customization means instant access to many camera features, getting the camera out of the way so you don't miss the moment.

Trading resolution for speed, the Sony a9 is aimed at photographers that need to capture fast action. Whether or not Sony can succeed in persuading professionals to switch to the E mount is uncertain, but the high-tech a9 is certainly the company's most serious sports camera to date – including previous SLT models. I'm very curious to see how it compares to pro DSLRs in our testing.

Reasons to buy

  • 20 fps bursts with AF/AE: The a9 can shoot at 20 frames per second with full autofocus and autoexposure. 93% frame coverage means the camera can track your subject to extremes of the frame, and the camera remains completely silent thanks to its electronic shutter.
  • Extensive buffer: You can shoot at 20 fps for up to an impresive 12 (Raw) or 18 seconds (JPEG) before the a9 slows down. While the buffer clears you can change most settings and view your shots, but you can't shoot movies.
  • Ergonomics: The joystick makes AF point selection easy, and most dials and buttons have been updated to provide more feedback. Extensive button customization and the addition of a My Menu make the camera a breeze to operate in fast-paced scenarios.
  • Battery life: A new high capacity battery means the a9 has the best battery life of any mirrorless camera to date. A vertical grip doubles this capacity.

Things to consider

  • Unintuitive video AF: While autofocus in movies is extremely responsive with no hunting, it's not easy to specify your subject, forcing you to use a fully auto mode or keep a single point over your subject. This negates some of the subject tracking benefits of the AF system.
  • Slanted images/video in fast pans: When using the fully electronic shutter for fast burst shooting (above 5 fps), there's some - albeit impressively little - rolling shutter effect that can slant straight verticals during fast pans. It gets worse in 4K video.
  • Compressed Raw artifacts: While you can shoot uncompressed Raw to avoid high contrast edge artifacts in compressed Raws, it comes at the cost of shorter bursts and larger files. Lossless compressed Raw - offered by the a9's peers - is overdue.

Product description

Style:Base  |  Configuration:Base

In one game-changing leap the revolutionary image sensor and high-speed processing of the α9 reaches performance levels far beyond the incremental improvements gained through decades of mechanical refinement. There is no viewfinder blackout. Continuous shooting speeds exceed those possible with mechanical shutters. Higher shutter speeds are available, and all without noise or vibration. The ability to keep an eye on moving subjects at all times leads to faultless AF and AE tracking, and the photographer’s view is consistently up-to-date with an absolute minimum of lag. In short, the digital promise has been realized at last.
