Customer reviews
Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
Back when there was only 5 reviews of version 12, 2 reviewers gave this product 1 star, thus giving the impression of "Buyer Beware!"
This was quite puzzling after I had done research on this as a quality product.
Thus, I purchased the product, and wrote the following "review", which I later updated, below the original.
If someone was researching what Amazon reviews said about the product, and thus read the negative reviews,
I wanted to reassure them I was ordering this without hesitation!
Also, there was a lot of strong evidence, it was a superior product, at a comparitively low price!
( No I don't work for Sony. see my other reviews.)
Thus my original review:
OK, don't be put off by the low scores. Perhaps because, so far, there are few reviews?
I researched and have purchased this from Amazon. I think my decision is reasonable.
I have yet to receive it by mail. Am I taking a chance? Sure, but the evidence shines through to the positive.
Of course I will update my 4 star rating up or down, once I recieve it and use it a bit.
I rated 4 stars because, I didn't want to put more people off, from seriously considering this product.
Here's the logic;
1.) This software is exactly the same as version 11, with the exception of being 64 bit and it can be adjusted to use popular brand GPUs.
In other words, some one familiar with version 11 sees very little difference in the layout except some additional plugins.
Version 11 has a nice user base, and a good rating from people who use it.
Users of lower versions of this product, who have upgraded to this 64 bit version have reported a huge difference in speed. Look for yourself.
2.) Version 12 "stand alone", has a good rating right here on Amazon. This suite IS version 12 stand alone, with additional programs included!
Judge the ratings by viewing Music Studio Platinum 12. But also check out version 11's reviews. Look elsewhere besides Amazon for more reviews.
3.) Included with the "stand alone" version of "Music Studio Platinum 12", is "Sound Forge Audio 10".
This also is a stand-alone program that seemlessly melds into the video program.
The 2 combined stand alone prices, are well above the Suite price. Check it out.
I already own and use Sony's Acid Pro 7, and the layout of both Sony products in Movie Studio PL 12 have the same work flow.
4.) I have asked questions about this product from a certain person who makes instuctional videos on how to use this and other "Sony Vegas" incarnations.
His videos are easily found on the internet.
I asked him about the compatability between the suites 64 bit Movie Studio, and the 32 bit Sound forge.( I bet you never thought of that! )
He explained, Both programs are working with manipulating files. And they work together very well.
A 64 bit program or a 32 bit program, do not change an MP3 file into 32 bit or 64 bit! Video files are the same!
He explained that it has to do with speed. Music files are small. So a 32 bits is fast for rendering music.
Rendering even complex music files, is nothing compared to rendering video. Especially the video Movie Studio is capable of producing. Thus 64 bit is an upgrade!
Yes this is "Sony VEGAS Music Studio HD Platinum Production Suite 12". Sony just decided to remove the words "Vegas", "HD", and "Production".
I will update my opinion, as soon as I receive and use the product. I may have to eat Humble Pie, but I don't let that deter me from what I expect to be a good upgrade
after mastering Windows Movie Maker. LOL!
Let's Face it, most people examining this product are looking to upgrade from something simpler, but they're not looking for something as complex as "full on" Premier or Vegas.
Secondary review: I was not surprised when I recieved Sony Movie Studio Platinum 12 Suite, that it was what I expected, and more.
The main disk includes 3 Sony stand alone programs, that can be purchased separately at a higher cost.
1.) Movie Studio Platinum 12
2.) DVD Architech Studio 5
3.) Sound Forge Audio 10
The bonus content disk contains:
1.)NewBlueFX 3D titling and Video effects
2.)iZotope Vocal Eraser
3.)Red Giant Magic Bullet Quick looks
Each of these disks are accompanied by a corresponding pamphlet, that contains all the serial numbers for your programs. Very nice!
Besides the extras on the bonus disks, the main program contains many many different video transitions, video effects, as well as the same for audio.
You really don't need any of the things on the extras disk. But they are powerful tools, that allow for creative freedom.
But, if you dig deeper on the original program disk, after you have installed, you can open and explore the folders, and find 50 royalty free Sony music tracks.
And something I didn't see advertised; 1001 high quality sound effects.
The main program is easy to use, if you have an interest in video editing. But just like buying a guitar will not make you know how to play it, you have to want to edit your videos!
Sony provides at a cost, many instructional DVDs use can buy and learn how to use this. BUT, Sony sent me an email providing a link to many free official videos they post on YouTube!
This support is what I've already experienced with Sony's Acid Pro 7. It fulfilled my expectations.
So, if I want to know how to add a title, I watch a video, then implement. EZ! How to fuzz out a license plate? Same.
I don't try to learn the whole thing. I just learn new things as I go. If I wonder how to do something, I look it up.
The program itself is professional grade. It works fast and smooth. Renders are very tight and sharp. It is a good choice.
I give it a "Nigel Tufnel" ELEVEN!
Hello AMAZON Fans E V E R Y W H E R E !!!!
(Note: see comment section for a link to a short test video edited using this software).
When I decided to acquire a video editing application I started looking at something simple and cheap (read: FREE), Windows Movie Maker fit the bill and I played with it a little. The problem I was having though was what instructional resources I could find on the web did not align up with what I was seeing on my screen so I looked further for other options. Reading a magazine review of different editors I found the Sony Movie Studio series to be highly rated and further research showed that there was a wealth of online resources dedicated to the software as well.
Two youtube authors in particular offering great instructional videos and who also have online forums associated with them are Movie Studio Zen & Muvipix. As well, related to Muvipix, you can find this book on Amazon which I just got myself and find it very informative:
The Muvipix.com Guide to Sony Movie Studio Platinum 12: The tools, and how to use them, to make movies on your personal computer using Sony's amazing video editing program
There are some tutorials included in the program. When you first open the program a window will pop up with three options; one for starting a new project, one labeled 'Show Me How', and one to just start using the software. Clicking the second one will guide you through getting started and such. You can also click on the 'Show Me How' option when you have the program already running. Sony has a video on youtube talking about the 'show me how' feature; do a search for: "Review Sony Movie Studio Platinum Suite 12 Software" by Sony Official.
Nosing around on the Application DVD through Windows Explorer I found a folder called 'Jump Start Tutorials' which has 8 tutorial videos in it you can watch; I copied them to my computer from the disc (about 500mb) so I can review them as needed. There is also a folder labeled Manuals and it has subfolders with various languages, I have not tried but you may be able to print one from there.
Having only recently started using the program I can of course only give you a first impression; and that would be that it is a very feature rich application whose vast resources understandably come with a bit of a learning curve; but nothing that should send anyone who has just even a little computer experience running away; there is just too much 3rd party support out there.
If all you want is to get something very simple; point > click > presto!, this would be overkill and you probably will not be happy. However if you are truly looking for something to get your creative juices flowing then this holds a great deal of potential.
There is a newer version available, v13, I chose this one for a few reasons; one being cost; as of this writing v12 is $40 & v13 is $104 here on Amazon; so I figure I am getting more bang for my buck, I read that v13 is optimized for touch screens and so the apps graphics may be a bit larger; I am presently using it on a small Lenovo x200 with a screen only about 12 inches and it is not a touch screen, it also has a older processor and I think the newer version would also be optimized for the more powerful machines coming out now. As well; v12 is something that has been out a while and has had a number of updates to shake out bugs.
Any hesitation I felt when researching this program and seeing the apparent complexity of the screen pretty much diminished after watching a good number of the 3rd party videos on youtube. While waiting for the package to arrive I used both my camcorder (Sony HDR-PJ350) and phone (Moto X) to take some short videos and now that I have it in hand I have been playing with what I captured to practice making simple videos with titles for when I have a real project I want to work on; piece of cake.
The only problem I have had so far was when going through the library of potential titles to use clicking on the NewBlueFX 3D option caused the program to crash; that could be though because of the limits of my particular computer.
If you want to have something you can really play with and explore your potential this would be something I can comfortably suggest you look into; less than that you might want to look elsewhere.
Have a Magical Day
Top reviews from other countries
Good editing tools and very good output quality than some i have tried give it
a try I'm sure you will not be sorry.
Worth the money.
My system Specs: [Windows 7 64bit 8GB Ram] - [CPU Intel i7-3610QM @ 2.30GHz Quad Core] - [GFX Cards Intel 400 & NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M]
The Sony movie studio is first rate, very easy to use and with the drag and drop facility makes production of a video very quick with brilliant results. One of the best.
Many thanks
