Seriously reconsider your purchase

This product is by and large a piece of junk. Like most reviewers here, I purchased this unit to replace an older Sony mp3 player that had been very reliable over several years. I was disappointed to see there wasn't an updated version of those older players - something with 32 or 64gb considering the price of components has dropped so much. But what Sony have done is reduce the quality of the build, remove features, mess with what was a very intuitive interface and ultimately sell an inferior unit with poorer sound quality and usability than previous products. I hate to jump on the bandwagon, but I agree with the other reviewers that Sony is no longer a company to be associated with quality audio products - whoever signed off on this Walkman was only concerned about the bottom line (perhaps for the mid-tier Asian markets). I will use this unit until I find a better product at a similar price point, and I will not make the mistake of buying another Sony device without thoroughly researching it and checking recent reviews first. Sony - you used to be world renown for your audio. Now you're just known for ripping your customers off.

Worthy successor to previous Sony models.

I got this Sony Walkman (16 gb) to replace my older model that was only 4 gigs. That and I think that the battery was failing on the old one as it would only hold a charge for half the time it did when it was newer.
That being said, it was a little workhorse that I used at work and doing yard work that never let me down. So when it started giving up the ghost a few weeks ago, I knew that I would replace it with another Walkman.
Like the previous one, it has easy to use controls even though the volume control is on the side as opposed to being on the front as with the last model. Some reviewers have complained that the face is plastic and not metal, but honestly...how much abuse is this thing supposed to be put through? It is an mp3 player not a sledge hammer. So that was not an issue for me. Second, I think that the sound quality is just fine. This is another point of contention in some of these reviews. Again, this is a small mp3 player...not a high fidelity sound system with EQ's and a 15,000 dollar built in mixing board. With a good set of ear buds or head phones, you will be pleasantly surprised.
The one issue I did run into was when I tried to upload my playlists to the player. Using Windows Media Player, I did the usual click and drag into the "sync with device" routine. My music was on the player but not in playlist format. When I went to "Playlists" on the player it said something to the effect of that there are no recognized playlists. After some searching online, I ended up downloading the Media Go app which is compatible with all Sony devices and after seeing and using it, is far superior to WMP in my opinion. I don't know if others have has this issue or just me or is it my WMP being problematic. Either way, Media Go solved that problem.
In summary, I am happy with this purchase as it fills my need to have music and only music on the go. I don't want to use my large and expensive phone while at work around chemicals or working outside in my yard with dust, dirt and debris flying everywhere.
If you have or have had a previous Sony Walkman and are looking for a replacement, I think that you will be satisfied with the latest incarnation of this device. Some of the controls have moved and maybe there's no pig iron on the face to stop bullets, but you'll find the same great battery life, ease of use and ease of loading music into it...and that's exactly what its supposed to be. After 35 years of owning Walkmans, some thoughts on the Sony E395 mentioned in comments and questions.

Playlists and transfer of files:
There are many of us that prefer to organize our pictures and music manually by creating folders and via the "drag and drop" of files, rather than depending on an app such as iTunes or Windows Media. I put my files in folders and use the "play folder" option at the "very" bottom of the Walkman home screen menu. It plays all the songs in the folder, thus no lost playlists and no proprietary software required. The Sony Walkman is a master at simply appearing as another drive on the computer. If you so decide, just put your folders in the music folder of the Walkman. Just another option.

Reduced features:
Sony has, indeed, removed many features from the Walkman. Most of these features, along with the video ability probably will not be missed on a bike ride, jog, or exercising.

Menus:
Navigating the E395 is simple and intuitive. The new E395 seems slower moving through menu functions and between songs. Sony decided to add a "browse by album cover" feature. The album art is not displayed very well. Unlesss you have memorized, visually, the album art itself or you have less than, say, a dozen or so albums, this, it seems to me, is not a useful feature.

Build quality:
The build quality is certainly less "jewel" like, but I think its lighter weight might just make it less susceptible to damage if dropped. The controls are sensitive, but the return of the outside "hold" switch is nice. Power it down and set the hold. To turn it on, it's one step, just release the hold switch, the unit turns on immediately (no more long double press and wait). Sadly, unlike its immediate predecessor, the front controls on the E395 are now flat (lack relief) again.

Volume:
The volume control is now back out on the side. I like this as you can adjust the volume while songs are playing and you are browsing other menus. The volume with the enclosed earbuds is fine. In fact, at higher volumes, it is uncomfortably loud. Turn off the Bass Boost. If you want to hear the lyrics and accompanying subtle orchestrations, play with the equalizer settings including the custom function.

Vehicle use:
Using it in the car has two options. On my vehicle it is recognized via usb and I can use the vehicle touchscreen, etc. If your vehicle does not recognize it, use the 3.5mm headphone jack to enter the vehicle's aux input. This also allows you to use all the menu functions of the Walkman home screen as well. If you want to charge your Walkman simultaneously, use the vehicle's 12v power outlet and a USB converter. (I've attached photos of both setups). The latest Walkman has the Android type micro usb. Buy a 12v usb adapter, a short male to male 3.5mm headphone cord, and a (I prefer retractable) usb to micro usb charging cord for older vehicles.
