Product Description

PAYDAY The Heist is an action filled first person shooter game that lets players take on the role of a hardened career criminal executing intense, dynamic heists in constant pursuit of the next "big score". Navigate diverse urban settings with three partners in crime - controlled by either AI or your best buddies in co-op multiplayer. Load out with an array of weaponry and equipment as you embark on a spectacular crime spree through six high-stake heists, including banks robberies, prisoner extractions and armored car hijackings.

Time for a PAYDAY - Cash in Before you Cash Out!

  • Six High-Intensity Heists: Whether you're blowing the roof off a building to extract a safe via helicopter or emptying the vault at the First World Bank, these action-packed heists will have players on edge and always checking their six.
  • Interactive Co-op Gameplay: Whether AI or live, your crew of four must operate as one to get the "big score." Sharing extra ammo and med kits, helping regen wounded partners, guarding key positions, taking civilian hostages or cracking through various security measures - it's all for one and one for all.
  • Endless Replayability: Dynamic environments, adaptive enemy behavior, shifting entry points, FBI agents repelling down on ropes through the skylights, SWAT teams crashing through the windows and special units crawling through the ventilation shafts makes each play-through of every heist a unique fight.
  • Massive Character Progression Tree: Players choose a specialty - assault, sharpshooter or support - to gain weapons and equipment that fit their preferred form of violence. Unlock trip mines, silenced pistols, machine guns and much, much more.
  • More DLC: Additional heists, weapons and equipment means PAYDAY - a digitally distributed AAA quality title for less than half the price of a retail game - is total OVERKILL.

Published in 2011 by Sony Online Entertainment and Developed by Overkill Software (founded by ex-members of the now defunct Grin Studios), Payday: The Heist is a cooperative first-person-shooter in which you play as one member of a four person professional criminal heist group. Objectives vary from robbing banks, stealing money from drug-lords, busting convicts out of a prison convoy, stealing diamonds from a high-rise security vault, high jacking a gold-filled armored convoy and stealing back currency printing plates from a traitorous accomplice. To accomplish these goals the players arm themselves with a variety of firearms and equipment which increases as you successfully pull of heists. During the jobs you'll encounter multiple levels of law enforcement from security guards to blue uniforms to various heavily armored S.W.A.T. and even spec ops "Sam Fisher" lookalikes. You'll also be responsible for subduing and controlling multiple amounts of civilians found amongst the heists. Combine all of these factors with the main plan of get in, get the loot and get out and you're in for one h*ll of a ride. Here are my thoughts on the incredibly unique and engaging masterpiece that is Payday: The Heist;

Pros

+ Random enemy generation creating a unique play experience every time.

+ Gritty, thrilling and frantic non-stop action that's the perfect emulation of any of your favorite heist movie scenes (Heat, The Town, Dark Knight etc.)

+ Steep but extremely challenging and rewarding learning curve that requires perfected teamwork. The sense of accomplishment after finishing a particularly tough heist is incredibly satisfying.

+ 3 very noticeable levels of difficulty. Normal, Hard and Overkill.

+ Absolutely brilliant soundtrack score by composer Simon Viklund. The music is a perfect distorted electronic combination of breaks, drums, guitars, synth and pulse-pounding beats. I can't wait for the official soundtrack to be released as it will be an instant purchase. By far the best score I've heard for a game of this genre for a long time.

+ Amazing dialogue and flawless voice acting on every level, especially by the four main characters. Profanity is handled perfectly and never feels forced. Character dialogue never feels repetitive or gets tiresome.

+ Some of the best co-op gameplay since the Left 4 Dead series.

+ Dedicated development who are feverishly working on DLC to keep us addicted heisters happy.

+ Experience levels and RPG-style upgrades are well designed allowing players of all levels to play together without terribly noticeable effects. Lower reputation players will simply have access to fewer guns, items and other upgrades but it's not a game changer.

+ Devilishly clever opponent AI.

+ Affordable.

Cons <All very minor>

- Storyline is thin and disjointed.

- No anti-aliasing or other advanced graphics options for PC as I believe this is a port from the PS3.

- Currently there are only 6 heists to choose from although more are on the way with DLC.

- Learning curve may be too difficult and frustrating for the average FPS player.

- Map layouts don't change.

- NPC AI can be sketchy and downright frustrating at times.

- Unable to open or close doors. This would be extremely beneficial when you have to hunker down and survive police assault waves.

- Mousewheel doesn't allow you to switch between weapons (at least not that I've figured out).

- All NPC's can roll, tumble, slide and climb over ledges but the player cannot.

- Smoke bombs are the only deterrents the police use at the moment. I would really like to see more, especially flashbangs that would blind you temporarily and tear gas which would make your vision blurry and eyes water.

- When an out of game player joins a game in play it freezes the current game for all players for approximately 10-20 seconds depending on the new player's connection.

- Could use more guns (also coming in the DLC)

- Primary and Secondary weapon choices are locked in their own trees. It would be nice to choose the Locomotive Shotgun and Compact-5 at the same time for example to work on achievements, rather than only being able to choose one or the other. I don't think this would be a game imbalance.

- Some clipping issues where enemies can take you down between floors and walls without seeing you can be frustrating.

Payday: The Heist is easily one of the best games I've played in years. Its unique premise combined with the random fast-paced gameplay creates a criminal joyride that I've never before experienced in a game. Throwing in the addictive missions and cooperative gameplay and you've got yourself a bona fide hit. The boys at Overkill Software deserve huge accolades for creating a game that brings to life the things one could only dream about doing in real life. Despite some minor technical issues, Payday: The Heist is a masterful co-op crime spree that no one should miss out on. 5 stars, more if I could!

No support for 360 controller. There is a workaround, but this game is best played by keyboard and mouse. Even if you get the buttons mapped on the controller, there still isn't a soft lock aiming option. For the casual gamer who likes controllers, get Payday 2 as it does support controllers. Overall, the game isn't that bad. They could have made some of the earlier missions much easier and it seems like there is an endless supply of stupid cops that love to run blindly into a hostage situation. Not for those that expect a certain amount of realism from their games. It is a true arcade shooter.

So I just tried to return this since it doesn't work and wasn't able to get my money back, so be careful since quite a few others have this same issue as I've discovered over this past 2 weeks of 'ownership'.

I not only have above the minimum reqs, but actually have their recommended system requirements with an ATI HD 1 GB vid card, 3.1 GHz Core 2 Duo, and 6 GBs of RAM. First the game would not start, but there were special 'fixes' that people had tried that managed to get mine to start. After this the game would not run properly and could not scale itself to a normal widescreen 1080 monitor. The game while running will run at very low fps even with everything gfx related is scaled down to their mins.

I am sure if this game worked it would be a fun 3.5/4 out of 5, but its of course unacceptable to have it a) not work, b) get zero response from game company on the current situation and how to fix it, and c)not be able to get a refund for this type of situation.

So if 20$ and this type of business ethic is no big deal, go ahead and buy it, it could be fun...

update 10/17 - changed my video card to a new NVIDIA 2GB DDR 3 card recently and decided to boot this up and install a couple gigabytes worth of updates on steam. No dice, still same issues, still unplayable.

The game sounds fun specially in co op with friends, nothing revolutionary, but quite well done.
There are some nasty issues around, lot of people have problems with drivers what is easily fixed by the users when you follow the guides posted for them.
But there are some worse issues like conflicts with USB peripherals, and you may be forced to unplug all your USB devices to be able to play the game. That's the worse.
I may have understood something like that back in the 90's when USB were a new thing, but now ? specially when there are too many USB devices, keyboards, mouses, game controllers, headphones, etc
In my case the game runs quite well, till at some point it freezes and had to be closed. really frustrating and disappointing.
I have over 70 different games, all but this one runs flawlessly, even games from the windows 95 era what doesn't have any issues with USB peripherals.
Really disappointed with the game and a company what makes a new game with this kind of problems.
