I currently am the happy owner of a PRS-950, but I'll try to incorporate the new Sony line as well as the Kindle 3. I've been ereading since the launch of the PRS505, which IMO was the ereader to have for over 3 years. With the Pearl screens I switched to a Kindle 3. While I still preferred most aspects of the PRS505, the Kindle 3's excellent hardware won me over... Until recently when I switched to the PRS950.

Right off the bat, the only real advantage of the 950 over other ereaders is the 7" screen and its more PDF appropriate aspect ratio... If you read only text (ie: novels) you could likely skip to the RECOMMENDATIONS portion of this review. But for some users (like me), this is the #1 issue, and I am happier with the PRS950 than I have ever been with another ereader. If complex PDFs publications are your bread and butter, then you want the 950.

DISCLAIMER: PDFs are not optimal in their native form, you must clip the excess white area margin! I use an excellent program called Briss, the process is outlined in the footnotes. The PRS950 has a "Margin Cut" Page Mode, but it doesn't seem to do anything at all. This is a fairly easy pre-processing step that will yield excellent results... Text PDFs can reflow and zoom (page breaks will be off, best to convert to epub/mobi), but complex PDFs cannot be reflowed and maintain their structure. Period. No PDF software in the world could effectively do this on the fly, so please don't blame the ereader!

I have opened several hundred PDFs on the 950 without issue. Equations, links, tables, footers/headers, images, embedded fonts, special characters. Everything is there, as it should be! The fonts, format, page breaks-everything views just as if on my computer PDF viewer.

I have never had an e-reader, always prefering "real paper" to the electronic versions of anything.
I ordered this after much research. The Sony readers allow you to download books from your local library, something that the Kindle does not do. This was the top criteria for my selection. It is extremely easy to use and has a beautiful screen that is VERY easy to read with no glare (I think there were glare issues with the 900 version) and weighs close to nothing but does not feel cheap or flimsy.
All software to download books from the local library was easy to install and I had books on my reader quickly and with no frustration.
I am VERY, VERY PLEASED with this and would definitely recommend it to anyone!

This is my first ereader so I'm a newbie but I have to say I love my Sony PRS-950! It weighs about the same as the Kindle or the Nook but it has a large touchscreen display and the memory is expandable up to 32gb. I made the decision to go for e-ink as opposed to buying an ipad or waiting for the Nook Color because I didn't want the backlight that comes with color screens. So far I haven't been disappointed with my choice. The e-ink is crisp, sharp, easy to read and easy on the eyes. The touchscreen is responsive and the controls are fairly intuitive. The ereader comes with a stylus for making handwritten notes in the margins of texts or you can use the built in keyboard to type your notes. The Sony uses the epub format, as well as lrf, so you can download books from Sony, Barnes & Noble or the public library without the necessity of converting your downloads (hint, hint Amazon!). If you do need to convert books to epub or lrf you can use Calibre (freeware) to do the conversions and it is already configured to manage your library.

This ereader was created with readers in mind and isn't designed to compete with the ipad (or the Nook Color, I would argue) but then it weighs less than ten ounces whereas the ipad weighs in at a hefty pound and a half. On the downside I have three minor complaints. First, there is no carrying case included and, with a $250 price tag (at Best Buy), you would think Sony could include a case that would provide minimal protection for the ereader. Second, the touchscreen is a little slow to respond sometimes when surfing the net. Third, I do wish Sony had included a hard copy owner's manual with the ereader as jumping back and forth between the preloaded owner's manual and the book or collection you are working with can be a little bit of a pain.

This device is almost technically perfect. I hesitate to do a full review of what I like because quite frankly it is just about everything. But for the most important feature, the screen is stunning. My wife was convinced she could never use an e-reader because they simply don't compare to books, but now that she's seen this model she's on board. Touch screen is flawlessly executed and does not get in the way of using the device as a book at all. Even I thought the aspect ratio was a bit wonky and wasn't sure I'd like it, but it turns out to be very useful and I prefer it over the keyboard on the Kindle. I'll leave a full review of the more esoteric features to others.

The biggest downside is that it only comes in silver. While the screen doesn't glare, the mirror-bright finish on the buttons does. Even the sides which are more of a brushed metal give an occasional unwanted flash. Overall, not worth knocking off a star, but this is an area where the Kindle with its subdued finish certainly beats out Sony. The cheaper Sony models have different colors that help, but they unfortunately do not have any form of wireless access (another win for the Kindle entry level reader).
