I bought this to have a dock that I could not only keep by my bed, but that would also travel well, and it delivers. The unit's form factor is well suited to both uses, being slim enough to keep on my nightstand and having a built in handle along with the option for battery power. The unit is relatively compact, but note that the product photo implies it's only about an inch or so thick. Actually, the back of the unit has a semicylindrical projection that's about 2.5 inches deep, and which extends from the base of the unit to about two-thirds of its height. It still has a pretty small footprint, and fits easily on my nightstand. I believe this projection is a tuned enclosure for the speakers, because below each speaker driver I can see what looks like a port that extends all the way into this enclosure. The Lightning connector is on a swivel, and the dock's leaned-back design naturally supports an attached iPhone, so undue stress on both the connector and phone is minimized. Thus far, I have only operated the dock on AC power.
The sound is quite good for a small unit, though it can seem low on maximum volume depending on placement. I was able to work around this by setting my iPhone's equalizer to the "Late Night" setting, which apparently boosts pretty much the entire audio band. Overall, the sound is rich and clear, again for a unit of this size.
One of my favorite features is the included remote control, which is excellent. It levels the footing with Bluetooth docks, allowing you to control your attached device without having to return to it every time. I originally found that it didn't work with the 7th generation iPod Nano, but trying it again proved me wrong.Read more ›
Out of the box, the set up is extremely easy and intuitive. I am not running it on battery (uses four AAA alkaline or rechargeable), just AC power, but the battery method is there if I ever want to take it anywhere, being very portable. My iPod nano sits perfect and snug on the lightning connector, though with the nano design it is off-center. The nano locks into place very easily. Likewise, as the connector angles out, it can be tilted out (straight up) for pulling up and off (holding the nano by the sides).
The remote is fairly standard and small and works as it should, ie with no issues. There is an on/off button, along with play and pause, previous and next track, as well as a menu button with an up and down feature. On top of the Sony there are also on/off and play/pause buttons.
Overall, the device delivers crisp and clear sound. The mid- and high-range and bass all sound very good and I greatly enjoy the music quality that it provides (from a very wide range of genres). With volume maxed out it will not shake the rafters, but I hear no distortion, except for very very heavy bass tracks. That said, the volume is ample to allow me to enjoy music throughout my one story rancher home. Not a five star unit, but very definitely above average in performance.

The sound was decent for a small room. Set your expectations with this. It won't light a room up with heavy sound. Read morePublished 4 months ago by Hal D. Cottingham
