This lens is a specialist in its own way - it has beautiful bokeh, is very sharp, produces vibrant colours, and has good image stabilization, which all come at a price... both in reduced light transmission and $$$.
To get the special bokeh the lens does need to get used wide open, which is f/2.8 for depth of field and f/5.6 for light transmission. The latter is not really a problem since the image stabilization compensates in many settings. You need to get a feel for the lens and how to use it best to get the effect it can produce. The lens shines as a portrait lens (if the subject is not too far away from the camera) but can also be used as a (near) macro for plants etc, where the bokeh and colour saturation really help to produce beautiful and in a way unique photos. The bokeh looks different to a conventional lens, it is very soft and light sources in the front or back of the plane of sharpness are smearing nicely into the background, without any swirl or cateye-style rendering. Of course, it is a matter of taste whether you prefer this special bokeh rendering to that of a conventional lens and whether it is worth the price for you. Personally, I am very happy with the purchase. However, if you are just looking for a portrait lens and don't care much about the bokeh then there are cheaper options out there.

Absolutely, the best lens for portriats. Currently my go to is the 85mm 1.4, but I think this 100mm STP 2.8 will take over as my front runner.. I took a few shots with it and I was blown away at it's performance. Can't wait to use it on a full shoot.
