A full-frame24mm to 240mm zoom range allows this one lens to cover an extensive variety of shooting situations with 10x effective zoom range, making it ideal for landscape, snapshots, portraits and travel where reducing luggage is a priority. The ability to switch from wide angle to telephoto without having to change lenses also means that more of those fleeting moments that make great shots will be captured. The advanced optics include 5 a spherical elements and 1 ED glass element, achieving high-quality performance in a compact overall design. An advanced linear motor drives the focusing mechanism for quick, smooth response throughout the extended zoom range. Handheld telephoto shots and low-light photography are facilitated by built-in Optical Steady Shot (OSS) image stabilization. Like all other FE lenses, the design is dust and moisture resistant.

The advanced optics include 5 aspherical elements and 1 ED glass element, achieving high-quality performance in a compact overall design. An advanced linear motor drives the focusing mechanism for quick, smooth response throughout the extended zoom range. When changing your aperture to defocus the background, the light sources appear blurred. This ‘bokeh’ effect of the blurred background can be enhanced with circular aperture blades used in this lens. Conventional aperture blades have flat sides creating unappealing polygonal shaped defocussed points of light. α lenses overcome this problem through a unique design that keeps the aperture almost perfectly circular from its wide-open setting to when it is closed by 2 stops. Smoother, more natural defocusing can be obtained as a result.
Aspherical lens elements
Aspherical lens design dramatically reduces spherical aberration while also reducing lens size and weight. Spherical aberration is a slight misalignment of the light rays projected on the image plane. This is caused by differences in refraction at different points on conventional spherical lenses which degrade image quality in large-aperture lenses. Specially shaped “aspherical” elements near the diaphragm restore alignment of light rays at the image plane, maintaining high sharpness and contrast even at maximum aperture and can also be used at other points in the optical path to reduce distortion. Well-designed aspherical elements can reduce the total number of elements required in the lens, thus reducing overall size and weight.
Only the middle groups of the optical system move to achieve focus, so the overall length of the lens does not change. Other important benefits include fast autofocusing and a short minimum focusing distance. Also, the filter thread at the front of the lens does not rotate, which is convenient if you’re using a polarizing filter.
Lens-based optical image stabilization
Gyro sensors built into the lens detect even the slightest movement, and the stabilization lens is precisely shifted to counteract any image blur that might occur. The use of precision, quiet linear motors and technology inherited from high-end Sony professional camcorders results in exceptionally quiet, effective image stabilization that contributes to high-quality movies as well as stills.

Packaging is minimal but the plus side is that it's quick to unpack. Unlike some other Sony lenses and particularly the Zeiss, the box just barely fits the lens. Inside you find the typical literature and the lens itself wrapped in a small bubble wrap bag. No additional cardboard bracing, no lens bag, no extra protection. This is true minimalist packaging. Thankfully mine came from Amazon packed in a larger box with some other items (soft items).
I've used super zooms from Canon, Tamron, Sigma and several others and have never felt that I was getting this level of performance. Of course, this lens costs a good deal more than the others but it shows in build quality and image quality.
Outstanding Image Quality
Excellent Build Quality
Ideal Carry Lens for All Day Outing
A bit on the heavy side can leave a small body feeling unbalanced
Packing was minimal. Thin cardboard box and some bubble wrap
Zoom is stiff right out of the box, hoping it breaks in
The lens performs well, given its native limitations. And the price, it does not break the bank like the tag for the 70-200G lens, especially since it has a 10x range. Very handy when traveling and despite the weight (not a boulder that some people might suggest, but it is more like some portable hard drives), it is a good balance on the Sony A7 II. The balance may be the same for the original 7, 7R & 7S. Image stabilization is nice, especially when paired with the in-body stabilization of the A7 II. Depending on how your camera is set up, barrel distortion and chromatic aberration is controlled for the most part, and shouldn't bring much of a challenge for your edits. Aperture is not constant (3.5 at 24mm, 6.3 at 240mm), but it doesn't make me fiddle with shutter speed or ISO much.
It would take over a year for Sony to compliment the A7 series with a true long range full frame zoom lens, but as I have stated before, it is a much welcome addition to the E-mount full frame selection.
It is a little heavy but I really don't mind it. I've walked around all day before and never felt the lens was too much to carry even at the end of the day.
I've also used this lens on several photography sessions, and I have truly enjoyed the range it offers.
Overall I truly have enjoyed this lens, and my only regret is not purchasing it earlier!
