11x zoom lens with high-quality exterior
From the Manufacturer
E PZ 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 OSS Power Zoom Lens
This "Powered Zoom" lens produces smooth constant-speed zooms that can be difficult to achieve manually. Other features that make this lens an excellent choice for moviemaking as well as stills include a wide 11x zoom range and Optical SteadyShot image stabilization that can keep your subjects sharp at all focal lengths, even when shooting handheld.
When changing your aperture to defocus the background, the light sources appear blurred. This ‘bokeh’ effect of the blurred background can be enhanced with circular aperture blades used in this lens. Conventional aperture blades have flat sides creating unappealing polygonal shaped defocussed points of light. α lenses overcome this problem through a unique design that keeps the aperture almost perfectly circular from its wide-open setting to when it is closed by 2 stops. Smoother, more natural defocusing can be obtained as a result.
ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass
As focal lengths get longer, lenses built with conventional optical glass have difficulties with chromatic aberration, and as a result images suffer from lower contrast, lower color quality, and lower resolution. ED glass dramatically reduces chromatic aberration at telephoto ranges, and provides superior contrast across the entire image, even at large aperture settings. Super ED glass provides enhanced compensation for chromatic aberration.
Lens-based optical image stabilization
Gyro sensors built into the lens detect even the slightest movement, and the stabilization lens is precisely shifted to counteract any image blur that might occur. The use of precision, quiet linear motors and technology inherited from high-end Sony professional camcorders results in exceptionally quiet, effective image stabilization that contributes to high-quality movies as well as stills.
Only the middle groups of the optical system move to achieve focus, so the overall length of the lens does not change. Other important benefits include fast autofocusing and a short minimum focusing distance. Also, the filter thread at the front of the lens does not rotate, which is convenient if you’re using a polarizing filter.
Optical image stabilization with Active Mode
Moving around while shooting movies means more camera shake that can cause blur. Although conventional image stabilization systems were not effective at compensating for this type of movement, “Active Mode” employs a wider range of motion for the compensation lens, achieving improved stabilization over a greater range of camera movement. Stabilization at the wide end of the zoom range is significantly improved, facilitating handheld movie shooting with minimum image blur.

Putting these E mount Sony lenses on the FS100 and 700 is the way to go. Auto exposure. Very good auto focus. And an image steady system that is simply amazing. And the lens shade that comes with it is very robust and effective - and looks way more professional. I can't believe they don't show it with the shade!
In the limited shooting that I have done thus-far, autofocus seems to be faster and more reliable, esp. when zoomed, than my old SEL-18200 lens - so am very happy there.
There are only three, relatively minor, flaws that I see. First, a wide-screen style rectangular video hood is included in the kit - GREAT. But there is no photographic hood. Putting this large video hood in a camera bag is a pain. If you are putting this lens on a photographic camera body (as opposed to a video camera), then you might want to consider purchasing an aftermarket 67mm lens hood. (In my case, I have the old photographic hood from my dead SEL-18200, so I am going to just use that. It will be nice to have the video hood for some things...but i don't want to carry that thing around most of the time.)
Another flaw is that with all the electronics in the lens, the controls and the servo motor housing create large bulges. This means that you CAN'T put the hoods on "backwards" for transport and storage. (A backwards mounted hood takes almost NO space, since the lens is "in" the hood. Even with the video hood, the amount of storage/transport space would be much reduced if you could reverse the hood.)
Finally, no surprises here, the lens is heavy. This is really not a flaw. Good glass and heavy-duty servo motors will be heavy. BUT...that makes the camera a bit front-heavy relative to the on-camera tripod mount for the NEX. I DO wish that they had found a way to put a tripod mount on the lens...so that is the flaw really... it is missing a tripod mount.
All-in-all though, it does all the important stuff very well and I am quite pleased with it. My complaints are just nits that perhaps add up to a total of a 1-star deduction...so there you go. Not perfect - but very very good.
