This zoom lens collapses to just 3/16" making it the perfect choice for on-the-go shooting when a compact, lightweight lens is ideal. Measuring just 3/16" when fully retracted, this SELP-1650 retractable zoom lens is super compact and easy to carry so you can quickly whip out your camera and spontaneously grab shots as they occur. It covers a 16 mm to 50 mm range for flexible shooting, and is equipped with one ED (extra-low dispersion) and four aspherical elements, resulting in a high-performance lens that is surprisingly very compact.

In this particular case though it’s more than just a few dollars, it’s substantially more than half price. Despite all of the warnings about not intended for sale in the U.S. and possible incompatibility issues, the reality is that this is the identical lens that’s sold in the retail box … there’s no value to anyone to make a special cheaper version. It all comes down to will you get a new unused one or will it be damaged and the fact that there is no warranty of any kind. Is that worth the risk and gamble? With some products, probably not, but with a lens if it works out of the box it’s probably going to continue working unless it gets physically damaged … and manufacturer warranties don’t cover that anyway.
HOW DOES IT PERFORM
This lens has been reviewed in depth in hundreds of places including some very respected and detailed pro photo sites so it would be a waste of time to repeat all that here. If you are looking at this model you know that it is an excellent value for the price and is well suited as a walkabout lens for the NEX series of cameras. It has a lot of potential if used properly and it certainly compliments the NEX series compact size by delivering a 24-75mm equivalent lens that folds into itself and only adds about an inch-and-a-half to the depth of the camera (not even really that since it doesn’t stick out much further than the handgrip). To get a lens with decent optical performance, a motorized zoom with that goes wider than average, and optical stabilization for the price and that has the Sony name on it is quite the bargain. I tried it side-by-side with the official retail boxed version and they were identical in look, feel and performance.
WHAT DOES BULK-PACKAGING MEAN
The term may be unfamiliar to you, most things you buy are in colorful retail containers complete with instructions, warranty info and accessories. In this case what you get is just the lens wrapped in bubblepak. That’s all. You can and should expect it to be clean, new and with both protective lens caps and of course you should expect it to work. All that was true with mine. You have no idea what the region of origin is but Sony has factories all over the world. In my case the country was Thailand. Also important to note is that various different sellers rotate on this page depending on who offers it for less that particular day, some may be better than others but you are the one who chooses which one so it has nothing to do with rating the actual lens.
I didn’t get this for pro studio work, which should be obvious because the lens is intended for a middle-of-the-line consumer point-and-shoot camera. You can’t expect Leica quality for the price. As a general-purpose lens for vacation trips the compactness, zoom range and image quality is highly acceptable and I like it.
Camera body tested: Sony NEX-7
Compared against: Minolta AF 28-135 F4-4.5 w/ LA-EA2 adapter.
-great range for APS-C sensor: equivalent to 24-75mm (standard zoom)
-size: very compact. Lens telescopes down to a size just a bit longer than the "pancake" 16mm. You can probably pocket a NEX with this lens attached. I know I can.
-weight: extremely light, I hardly notice it.
-quiet enough for video: zoom, focus, and stabilization are all driven by motors in the lens, but the motors are very quiet.
-stabilization: includes sony's Optical SteadyShot (OSS) technology, to stabilize your images, extending your shutter speeds safely down by 2-3 stops. This means you can shoot with less light, or with a less steady hand.
-controls: front ring acts as a zoom ring when in autofocus. Becomes a focus ring when in manual focus mode. Zoom can always be done with a W-T sliding switch on the barrel.
-focus: pretty quick, no complaints.
-filter ring: 40.5mm, very uncommon size, not a lot of filters available in this size. Also an uncommon size for a lenscap. I wouldn't mount any heavy lens accessories to this lens, for fear of hurting the tiny motors inside.
-distortion: extreme barrel at wide angles, almost fisheye. Becomes pincushion very quickly.Thankfully, most e-mount cameras come with a built-in correction for this lens, so you shouldn't see it in your shots unless you disable lens correction.
-slow aperture: only F5.6 at 50mm, which is very, very tight for a maximum aperture at 50mm. Many lenses can do F2.8 at 50mm (caveat: those lenses will be MUCH larger) Hard to take good 50mm portraits, as F5.6 will put much of your background in focus.
-sharpness: not the best. Edges are pretty soft at all focal lengths, stopping down helps.
-vignetting: pretty severe at 16mm, a bit better by 25mm, and decent enough by 50mm. Never fantastic.
-power zoom: camera takes a moment longer to 'wake up' as it has to fire up the power-zoom system, and extend the lens barrel. This uses a little more power, too.
Not a pro tool. Great tool for the casual photographer, or as a "always with you" camera configuration.
Remember, the best camera is the one you are actually using, rather than having it collect dust on a shelf. No camera or lens is useful if it stays at home. This one is so small, you'll keep it with you, which means more shots.
drop your pancake lens. I have a NEX-6 which I love and accidentally dropped it maybe 4 feet moving things around. I usually wrap the neck strap around my hands to make sure everything is secure but I guess I did not do it this time or not good enough. Anyway, ever since that mishap my original lens was giving me trouble. Sometime the camera would say the lens was unrecognizable. Other times the lens would not open at all. Eventually while out in Little Italy and SOHO shooting scenes it finally fully stopped working on me. Forcing me to replace it
