Great AM reception. FM's OK too, even the weather channels. I own 3 or 4. I use it daily and I have for years. I do replace the headset with ear buds. It takes a single AAA battery which last a long time. 100 hours is a fair guess. The radio lasts indefinitely. More than 5 years of daily use. (the ear buds not so much). I've not had one fail other than due to major mechanical trauma. I even submerged one, dried it out and it came back to life. This is a replacement for one the puppy ate.

Everything I wanted to replace my old Walkman radio/cassette players. The old Walkman radios were clearly worn out as the controls were no longer functional and the headphone jack connection was intermittent. It was time for a replacement.

Update - the antenna for FM is the wires leading to the headphones. They are probably too short to get consistent reception and must constantly be moved or held with one hand to lock in the FM signal. This was not the case with the original Walkman. What may work is a pair of headphones with a longer wire to the headset.

I read the reviews before buying this unit. There were two main complaints at the time. These were station interference and the power button being struck during storage, causing the battery to be drained prior to the next use.

I bought this unit despite these complaints. I expected interference problems given the power of the unit and thought I could remedy the power button being accidentally struck.

However, the user manual addressed both issues. The unit has a lock switch. This is mainly used, I believe, to prevent an accidental strike of any of the station keys, resulting in having your station accidentally changed. However, this lock switch can be used to prevent the unit from being accidentally turned on. When you turn the unit off, engage the lock switch. As long as the lock switch is engaged, the power won't go on when the power button is pressed. You just have to remember to disengage the lock switch before turning the unit on next time. I forgot and started thinking either the unit was faulty or the battery was bad.

Concerning the station interference, there is a tuning switch that has two settings. I'm unclear of it's purpose but if it's set to the wrong setting, any station will be difficult to hear. I don't believe the tuning switch would corrcct the interference of competing stations, but thought I'd mention it here anyway. I'm next to Philadelphia but no where near downtown. My area largely doesn't have competing stations. But it is possible to have station interference on some stations at certain times and at certain physical locations. I would expect station interference to be commonplace in large cities. But, again, I would expect this given the unit's power.

The weather stations typically are hard to hear, but I've had this problem with past units from other companies. I need to listen carefully, but given how often I listen to weather, this is no problem.

I hope this information helps. I'm very glad I bought this unit and am using it a lot more than I had expected.

Love This Radio!

I got this radio several years ago from amazon and used it when I would take walks. At one time you could listen to both radio and television on it but now you can only listen to radio because the TV stations are digital and the frequency for listening to TV stations on this are analog frequencies. However this came in handy during Hurricane Sandy during the power outage. This was one of the radios in my house that I hooked up a small speaker to through the output for the headphones and we were able to hear what was going on. Ironically several TV stations broadcast their audio signal on the radio. The batteries lasted for a long time before they needed to be changed.

To operate it, you have to see it

If this device came with a headphone-cord remote (as with Sony's D-NF600 CD player, which I also own), it could have been a great commuter's companion. As it is, one really must look at the device to operate it. The Band button, the WB (direct weather band) button and the Power button all are almost identical in size, and trying to manipulate the radio without taking it out of a pocket or a vest is maddeningly difficult. More thought would have made this a much more useful product. For instance:

Pressing the WB button takes one directly to the weather band (of course). But changing back to, say, FM, requires finding and pressing the Band button, which, as noted, feels just like all the other buttons, which have no effect in WB mode. Ideally, pressing the WB button a second time should revert to the previously selected band.

More useful than a WB-direct button would be one that cycled through all pre-set channels -- and that was shaped and felt different from the rest.

Bottom line: Unless this radio is within your line of sight, changing channels or bands is impractical, making it not so useful for walkers, joggers or exercisers -- and not worth the premium Sony retail price. Shop around, and consider other models, like the cheaper (although, yes, more cheaply made) Coby CX-9 Mini (which I also own).
