I was ready to purchase the Bose Soundlink 3 until I listened to the Sony SRSX7 at the store. I was blown away by the sound quality produced by the Sony. The X7 has a very clear natural sound when compared to the Bose Soundlink 3. I found the sound out of the Bose to be flat and muffled. I was with 4 other people and all of them liked the quality of sound from the X7 better then the Bose. Regarding volume, I would say that the Bose does reach a higher level so that might be consideration if you plan to use it outdoors. For me, the volume from the Sony is more then adequate and not much of a factor.

It is very easy to see that both of these speakers are very well made and are quality products. I would say that the Sony is more elegant in design while the Bose appears to be more rugged so it would be better for outdoor use and travel while the Sony would be better for home use.

I am in the process of testing the battery life of the Sony and it is still playing after 5 hours of use at 50% volume. Bluetooth pairing with the X7 was very fast and easy. I had difficulty reconnecting to the Bose after the initial pairing so I had to repair it to connect again.

I also compared the Sony X5 and X7 after watching a YouTube video that suggested that the X5 was better sounding. I found the X7 to be the winner in both sound quality and volume.

I hope this was a helpful review. Sound quality is subjective but if you try out the Sony I think you will find it to be a fantastic sounding speaker!!

**UPDATE (5/18/14)**
Upon writing my review, I was contacted by a Sony representative and told there was a firmware update that addressed some of the issues described in my original review below, so I went ahead and did the firmware update. Here are my findings.

First the firmware update experience. The firmware update process is a bit convoluted, and the instructions on Sony's own website is not very well written--which I'll get into more later. First thing you have to do is connect the speaker to your wifi network. The update cannot be installed any other way. I would prefer if they allowed a USB connection option, but I believe the USB port is solely a power relay to charge devices. If the data pins are active on the USB connector, the software still doesn't support this type of firmware update.

That being said, here are the steps I had to take to connect the speaker to my wifi router.
1) Download SongPal app from android or apple app stores and install it on the device with which you want to control the SRSX7. I used my Galaxy Note 2 to accomplish this.
2) This next step, I had to figure it out myself. It is not indicated in any Sony literature provided in the package or online. Connect your phone to your router's 2.4GHz band. If your phone is connected to your router using the 5GHz band, your will not be able to connect your speaker via wifi. Both the speaker and the controlling device must be on the same band. The speaker doesn't support 5GHz, so that is the reason behind using the 2.4GHz band.
3) Turn the wifi switch to the "on" position. Also extend the wifi antenna if necessary.
4) Open SongPal on your phone and go to "network settings" and enter the SSID and password/key. The speaker does support push button and pin WPS.

UPDATE 02/05/2015
Well, the SRS-X7's touch control panel is completely unresponsive now, which makes doing anything with the speaker just about impossible. I can pair a device via NFC or use the line-in jack in the rear of the speaker, but that's it. Since the pairing touch button doesn't work, I can't connect through normal Bluetooth and I'm unable to change the volume directly from the speaker. As renowned as Sony is, they've never been a great company to deal with when it comes to warranty repairs. I'm bummed that this speaker has to go to the recycling center.

UPDATE 06/12/2014 RE: Firmware 2.03.2.01

A few days ago, I noticed that the volume UP touch button wasn't responding. I fiddled with it and found that it'd work on occasion, but not always. The speaker was stuck with the volume all the way down a few times, so I had to reset it (press volume down and on/off at the same time for 5+ seconds). Each time it'd come back at a volume that I could hear. The firmware version out of the box was 1.04.1.02, so I decided to upgrade to 2.03.2.01 to see if that'd take care of the issue, even though it's not mentioned as a fix for my problem.

The update, which requires you to connect the SRSX7 to the Internet and plugged into the wall, took about 10 minutes to complete. Unfortunately, it didn't fix the volume button so now I'm forced to keep the volume high (when it does respond) and stick to only using the volume controls on my devices.

I've included links to the Sony firmware page and an online help guide/manual for the SRSX7 in the comment section.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:

The Sony SRS-X7 is a premium wireless speaker with a larger-than-normal feature set and very good sound quality.
