First off, if you are considering between the XB30 or the more powerful XB40, I highly suggest going with two XB30s (same price as XB40). The sound definition in stereo mode is better, and also being spread out more than the single source of sound, it makes up for lack of volume you would otherwise get from the XB40.
Treble frequencies dip a little at 5khz and start to drop off above 10khz. Extra Bass enhances the low end frequencies well, but may be too strong at close range (3ft) at lower volumes. In other words, they are not crystal clear or crisp, but by no means muddy. For BT speakers these speakers sound excellent.
The speaker will last 15-17 hrs at 75% volume (lights off).
For a good speaker, I feel they lack some functionality. Battery indication is only present by holding down the button and voice announces battery level, or, in the Sony Music Center app.
No power indication lights on unit, or even the BT icon in staus bar. The indication is also only in approximated increments of 25%.
Also, No Micro USB to charge the unit, instead charges with a proprietary A/C pin power adapter (inconvenient).
The Sony Media Center app that is compatible to control the XB30 is also a bit laggy or glitchy and takes a bit of effort to use. But works for the basic function.
Overall really happy with the purchase, and highly reccomend buying two for stereo playback if you are an audiophile.

I love this speaker.
I was going to buy a Bose, but took a chance on this one. I'm glad I did and saved about $70. This sounds great. It's nice to have a separate button for bass boost because it's a feature that I rarely use - it only sounds good in certain circumstances. You can also adjust the sound through the app, so you can tweak it to your preference (within reason).
The lights are fine, but not that interesting to me.. even late at night.
The best feature is its battery life. Rated at 24 hours, I haven't tested it to the end of the battery, but I have used this far more than my last one and still had 50% remaining.
There are 2 minor things that I don't like. 1) compared to my last bluetooth speakers, this doesn't have an independent volume adjustment from the bluetooth setting. My other bluetooth speakers had a volume level, and the bluetooth volume was separate. It's not a huge deal, but... what it does mean is that using the volume + and - on my iPhone is far less useful because the increment is too much. If it had independent volume, I could turn it down on the XB30, which would make the increment less for each click. As it is, I find myself having to use the slider instead (which means I have to pull it out of my pocket and look at it, rather than just using the buttons).
The other thing that surprised me is that it doesn't have a USB charger. I use this remotely.. I have USB chargers on 12v batteries in the two places I use this the most. But when it comes time to charge, I have to bring it to a 110v outlet. Curiously, the charging port is 5v, so it would mean they could throw in a USB adapter and have both options. Of course, I plan on making one, but I shouldn't have to. It's not the end of the world, but it is puzzling to me. This seems like something only an electronics giant like Sony would do. Old school thinking is that everything runs off of AC. But these days, USB ports are everywhere.
EDIT: this USB cable works for charging: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01KPN1NKM/

I love good quality audio and was a little leery of purchasing a bluetooth speaker as I figured I would have to go for low quality to meet my price needs or that I would spend a small fortune on something I would only use for 45 minutes a day in order to get decent quality. I have several thousand dollars in headphones and have spent thousands for surround sound speakers, plus the amps to run them all to specs. What should this mean to you? Nothing, there is so much snobbery in the audiophile world that you really should take everything with a grain of salt... or pile... yes... pile of salt.
I bought all the JBL models, sent them back. I bought a bunch of the Anker models and I sent them back. I finally went for this Sony model and have no reason to go elsewhere. I paid $73 for it, which was very affordable for me.
I will say this. I use this speaker outside while I jump rope every day. This review is largely based on that, as I have good sound equipment inside the house. The bass boost was very necessary for me since I wanted to hear the bass thump (helps keep my rhythm while jumping rope) and living on a farm with a lot of potential wind blowing across the farm field and/or farm equipment noise can drown out the music quickly.
The loudness of this speaker is great. It is able to compete with the wind under 10 mph (kind or hard to jump rope at higher winds anyhow). This speaker needs the bass boost for outside venues, or the "thump" will get drowned out quickly. For those of you who are less versed in how bass works, bass thumps when there is a good seal or containment of the soundwaves. For a headphone to have better bass, all you have to do is get earpads that seal the phones to your ear. This is why Beats have too much bass, the seal to the ears doesn't leak the soundwaves out. The fact that it still has bass outside, while not distorting the mids and highs much is a testimony to the engineering.
Yes there are snobs in these reviews who claim that you shouldn't like or want "boosted" bass... whatever... you like what you like. I hate boosted bass on my headphones because I have good amps and good headphones that will amplify that distortion and make it sound worse. I don't get that from this speaker. It doesn't sound distorted to me.
I did need to use the EQ from the Sony app to get it to sound the way I wanted. I think out of the box it was a little average sounding, but once I balanced some of it out, it really shines.
I went for the blue model which sells for a lot less than the other colors. I am about to buy a second pair to get some stereo sound for those days I have too much ambient sound for the speakers to compete with.
Edit: June 2018... I bought a second speaker... this thing is amazing in stereo sound. I bring them both everywhere outside when I'm working in the garden too. It does such a great job with outdoor venues. Indoor, it's great as well, though it barely needs volume with two of them. Outside, you will lose sound quality once you get past 10 yards or so. Just to put it in perspective.

This is a fun but still very pro sounding product.
Reviewed in Canada on May 21, 2017This is no biggie though as it can obviously still be used via bluetooth. (Connecting was simple as most bluetooth devices are. The first time is showed up and paired no problem, however I have found that sometimes I have to press the power button for it to show up and pair.)
The sound is excellent for a relatively small and light speaker. It's clear and yet still goes quite loud without any sign of distortion. I've used it outside to do some yardwork and it still sounded clear and full while I worked away in the distance.
The extra bass button does definitely increase the bass which is nice for most music I find. It gives it a fuller sound.
The flashing lights are fun for a party atmosphere but can be easily turned off and back on, by pressing and holding the bass button down for a few seconds. (The lights initially seemed random to me, but with songs with more bass and drums it does actually sync and light up in rhythm to the music. The outer ring changes colour constantly and then there are also some bright white led lights at either end that also blink on and off. See my video that's in with my photos on this review.)
This speaker is water resistant which is a nice feature to have in a cordless bluetooth speaker, for taking by the pool or hot tub etc. (It's water resistant, not waterproof, so it will not likely survive being dropped in water. It can likely just handle some splashing and spraying. (If it gets wet, wipe it with a dry towel and then simply let it air dry. Don't use a hair dryer or anything on it.) AND ensure the back flap that covers the charging connection is securely closed and sealed.) It has a nice grippy feel to it, to make it less likely to slip out of your hand and drop it while carrying it around.
If you get more than one of these, you can link them up via bluetooth to have music in different zones, which is also nice for a party effect, or if you're just working in different areas. The manual states the maximum bluetooth range is 30 ft (but that depends on obstacles and magnetic fields etc..)
I did download Sony's SongPal app, but honestly didn't find it any more useful than any other music app I already use. I'm sure it's usefulness comes into play much more when you're setting up multiple speakers.
This unit includes:
- a built-in microphone so you can make and answer calls handsfree with it.
- A USB jack OUT, so you can charge your phone with this device - which is a handy AWESOME feature if you're in a pinch!
- a lithium ion battery (also awesome and a must these days) and lasts up to 24 hours depending on volume. (24 hours at a lower volume and the light feature turned off. At maximum volume and light on, the battery life is 4 hours.)
- a charging, power cable
Just a few comments from the supplied Sony Reference Guide:
- When using this (or any speaker really) outside, avoid keeping it direct sunlight as that can obviously get pretty hot and can aversely affect any electronic device. Use between 5ºC - 35ºC. Higher than 41ºC it may shut down to protect itself.
- Do not use any alcohol, benzine, or thinner to clean the exterior as this will likely eat away at the coating. (Only use a slightly damp cloth to wipe it down. No soap. Nothing but water.)
At $179.99 (at the time of this review) it's a solid unit that won't disappoint especially if you're a Sony die-hard fan.
I couldn't find anything wrong with this unit.
I'm settling in at 4 stars instead of 5 because there are simply some features that I can't or won't use. (I don't need flashing lights, and more often than not will turn them off, plus at this point in time I don't have or need multiple speakers that will sync together. So for those reasons, I personally wouldn't spend extra of my hard-earned cash to get those features, but if these are important to you, you might find yourself giving it 5 stars.)

I'm unable to take advantage of the NFC (Near Field Communication) connectivity aspect of this because I have an iPhone. (Apple uses NFC for its Apple Pay and doesn't share it's NFC technology with third party users for security reasons.)Reviewed in Canada on May 21, 2017

Great speaker, you can't go wrong.
Reviewed in Canada on May 10, 2018Color: BlackVerified Purchase
Great speaker, definitely one of my best bluetooth speakers (I have Anker, Turcom, August, etc), and I use it everyday. It has great battery life and is very durable (It fell off of the top of my fridge and it still works awesome). Is it worth the extra dough compared to my other speakers? Probably not (I paid less than $100 for my other speakers) but I got this one on sale, so I can't complain. I would say that this speaker is comparable bass wise with my other speakers. I haven't linked this speaker with other Sony speakers, but it's nice that you can do so. The lights are a little gimmicky, but my son likes them, and I can't knock the fact that they do add to the atmosphere in a dark room.
If you don't mind spending a few extra dollars, you can't go wrong with this speaker.

En cuanto a sonido la mejor de su categoria. Las luces son un plus.
Reviewed in Mexico on April 27, 2018Color: BlackVerified Purchase
