If you have the 16mm NEX pancake, you should have the wide-angle and the fish-eye converter. The .75x wide-angle really does make a difference. The fish-eye is even wider than the wide-angle... and you can also play with your creative side with the curved fish-eye effect. These attachments are very practical in actual use. If I have the 16mm on, I'd usually either have the wide-angle or the fisheye lens on as well. If I don't want to use it, I simply take it off and hold it in my left hand, take the photo, and snap it back on. It's very easy. Image quality is good though you won't get that tack-sharp image. Not with the pancake and this attachment. But it's great for what it is and the real genius is that these are designed to be used with the 16mm, which cuts down on the bulk of having all three as separate lenses. And if these were all separate lenses, I'd probably never buy them all. However, for about $100 for each of the attachments, why not? It's a bargain. If buying only one, then I'd probably pick the wide-angle over fish-eye b/c it's more practical for more shots... however that said, the fisheye literally changes the shape of the photo and gives your photo a cool effect while the wide-angle makes the pancake more, well, wide-angle. Up to you. I also like that the fisheye's curve effect is more mild than typical fisheye lens, which makes it more practical to use in more shots.
There are a few annoyances:
- The attachments are a bit big and heavy *relatively*. Attaching it essentially doubles the 16mm pancake size and weight and it's like carrying the 18-55 lens.
- You can't attach a filter. Also when you attach it to the 16mm, you must take off the filter from that lens. I have to take off the UV filter and it's annoying.
- The front and rear caps are not the standard caps but are more like soft plastic lids. The front cap is especially prone to falling off.
- Comes with a nice case, which I suppose is a good thing, however it adds to the bulk and weight when you carry the lens around. Of course you can leave this at home.
- Not image stabilized. This a limitation of the 16mm lens, not this attachment, however, since the attachment can be used only on the 16mm, it is impacted. Can't have it all I guess.
Regarding performance, after taking and critically viewing several test shots both indoors and out, I was highly impressed with the excellent resolution and vivid colors, even on small details of the original pictures. With tight interior scenes, there is relatively little distortion in the form of leaning vertical lines at the edges, which used to plague me with the 21mm ultra-wide angle Leitz lens that I used with my Leica M-series film camera decades ago.
As for minor drawbacks, I could find none other than that there is no way to attach a filter. I had assumed that the basic flash attachment might not be able to illuminate the full width of the image, but found on testing that even the edges received quite even lighting. The converter is noticeably heavier than the small 16mm lens when held separately, but when mounted on the camera the total weight is about the same as with the default 18-55mm lens.
Overall, this Sony converter combines with the 16mm lens to form an excellent ultra-wide angle lens at a very attractive price.
