I've been waiting for this converter availability in the US and finally received it Dec 21 2010.
I'm more than happy with it, i don't photograph brick walls and on a notoriously soft (?) 16mm i'm completely satisfied with the converter even at 2.8. The converter locks positively on the 16mm with a bayonet system but there is some play once in place. It's light to carry, the 16mm+FE is about the size of the kit zoom and very convenient to use. Works for me, better than say a Zenitar 16mm or the excellent Samyang-Rokinon-Opteka etc 8mm, both of which are more expensive, bigger and heavier and without AF. Well, AF on a FE has limited use but still you don't have to worry about pre focus and guesstimate with the Sony combo. This goes with the carefree spirit of the NEX. I would recommend the Samyang if you want to use it on the NEX AND another camera (you can get the appropriate adapter for the NEX E mount) but you cannot go wrong with this converter if the NEX is your main fare.
Comes with a cute case and looks good on your 16mm!

UPDATE WITH ECU1/EVF1 ON OTHER NEX E LENSES
A year of rather intensive usage has not curbed my enthusiasm for this converter on the 16mm. Actually I leave it on the 16mm most of the time, just taking care with focus (the AF multi points will focus most of the time somewhere near infinity so i use center focus and lock it on my subject) and middle aperture (5.6/8) whenever conditions permit. This said, the combo is perfectly usable at 2.8 and multi points AF.
I have also acquired the 18-55mm (which came with my Nex7), the VG 55-210mm and recently the 50mm 1.8.
Both the ECU1 and the FE will fit positively on all 3 but vignette heavily at the shorter ends of the 2 zooms (solid black frame).

I am reviewing both the VCL-ECU1 Ultra Wide Converter, which converts the 16mm NEX pancake lens into a 12 mm (35mm equivalent - 18mm) lens with field of view about 100°, and also the VLC-ECF1 Fisheye Converter which gives the 16mm lens a 10mm effective focal length, for a full 180° field of view.

In the past I have shied away from teleconverters and wide angle converters under the assumption they inevitably will degrade the base lens. The set of Sony 16 mm base lens and two converter lenses, which should be considered a three-part modular system, shows this is not necessarily the case. These three units taken together are an absolutely brilliant combination which any NEX photographer will enjoy immensely.

For some reason Sony has an inferiority complex when it comes to camera optics. They have adopted the brand of Zeiss on some lenses to boost name recognition. The truth however is that Sony has some extremely talented lens designers of their own. They should be proud of this wide angle set but for some reason have not explained it clearly to customers.

After using these, it is clear all three pieces were designed as a unit. The mechanical coupling is precise and secure. The performance of the Ultra Wide Converter is quite excellent and gives beautiful results, with no special adjustments required on my NEX 5n for focus or exposure. Is the optical quality as good as a 'big boy' wide angle like the Zeiss Distagon 18mm lens? I don't know and don't really care since at $1400 the Zeiss costs 4X the total price of the three components. My photos tend to suggest Ultra Wide with the 16mm base was designed as the primary optic, since the 16mm base lens by itself is not so stellar - the combined pair is actually sharper.

This has become one of my favorite lenses of all time. It is a full frame fisheye lens Conversion Attachment with excellent sharpness and little light falloff. I can't say enough good things about it. I have a similar Nikon lens that is not better than this and cost me over $600. As mentioned, it must be attached to the wide angle lens to work properly. I also posted an image taken with the zoom lens that looks like a "Lensbaby" image just to show how it works. It works perfectly using the vertical Panorama mode and covers huge areas with great resolution.

This is a beautiful piece of glass just to look at and hold. The images are outstanding. It is a true gem to own and use. There are not many available, so buy it if you can find one.

Let me first say that the the 16F28-SEL; VCLECF1; and VCLECU1 are a SYSTEM and should be purchased together.

They are not super high quality lens. (If you are trying to compare them to Leica or Zeiss... DON'T BOTHER; at $500.00 for all three, they are not even in the same league.)

However if you have an NEX and are looking for a relatively inexpensive investment to expand the usefulness of your camera, THESE ARE GREAT.

My wife and I brought them on our recent vacation and could not have been happier. The Wide Angle Converter (about 12mm) was absolutely wonderful for taking photos of landmarks and buildings that simply never fit into the frame of anything narrower.

If you are going on vacation and want to get photos of famous buildings and monuments and such, I strongly recommend these lens.
