5.0 out of 5 stars Best Xperia yet (longtime Xperia user since 2011)
By DQ on March 23, 2021
Overall this has been the best phone I've got so far. Got it about a month ago, and now that the honeymoon phase is over I can write an honest review.

Hardware:

- Body: the built quality seems to be pretty solid, the feeling in the hand is awesome, albeit a little slippery, so I keep it all the time in a Caseology Vault case, which is, IMO, one of the best feeling case for the price, just rock solid. I haven't dropped the device nor I intend to do so, but from first impressions, hopefully it can survive as long as my previous Xperia XZ has.

- Display: it is a gorgeous display, with awesome colors and great contrast that OLED tech brings to the table. The brightness seems good enough, I haven't tested as much on the outside but I have zero complaints so far. The fluidity when 120Hz is enabled is just awesome and very hard to go back to regular 60Hz displays. The touch inputs are precise, but for certain games you might need to fiddle with the Game Enhancer app to reduce its sensitivity since it might twitch under tiny finger movements.

- Performance: tested for several demanding games such as Call of Duty, PUBG, Genshin Impact and others not as demanding titles but equally impressive such as Alto's Odyssey, Monument Valley, Duet, the performance, visual and sound is top notch.

- Sound and Haptics: audio coming from this device is clear and loud enough (with Dolby enabled is even better). The sound is very balanced when holding it on landscape orientation and the tallness of the device provides enough separation between the channel to fully immerse you when watching a movie. I tested playing the first 30 minutes of "1917" and I was blown away by the display but also the sound and Dynamic Vibration system (set to the lowest setting) which made you feel each bomb, gunfire, crash or heavy sounds coming from the device.
Most people turn off this feature since it can be a little distracting but I like to enable it for certain media, and handheld movies fall into the category I enjoy with this haptic enabled. For music I usually turn it off but sometimes I turn it on since it fools you into feeling more "bass" than there is coming from the speakers. I only wish this Dynamic Vibration system was available for gaming instead of just music and video playback, it would definitely feel like HD Rumble if this was implemented.

- Cameras: there are several videos and reviews about this camera system for the Xperia 1II and 5II. It is a system that works best when you put a little effort in learning the basics of Photo Pro Mode, but even if you use the simpler Camera app it doesn't disappoint in my opinion. My wife's Pixel 4a has better auto-night modes and certain scene improvements due to computational photography, but the raw images coming from the Sony are just as nice, and the noise control is astounding, surpassing even my RX10mII in that regard. Colors are nice, and you mostly get what you see... but if you wanna tweak things around, you can with the Pro app. The quality is pretty consistent between the 3 sensors, giving similar results among the ultrawide, main and telephoto lenses, and the digital zoom is quite good.
I haven't use Cinema Pro as much though, and it is a bit more complex when it comes to setting the light and scenes, someone with videography experience can take so much advantage of this though.
Front camera is just ok. My 4 years old Xperia XZ had a better 13MP autofocus front facing camera. This one is just meh but it gets the job done.

- Miscellaneous:
the fingerprint scanner is very good... in fact it is so good that it can be a bit annoying at how sensitive it is. Sometimes I brush one of my registered fingers against it and it will quickly unlock. But overall is just a reliable sensor in the best location possible, I like side fingerprint scanners better than those located on the back or front of the device.
the buttons are all well positioned (except for the Google Assistant button which I dont care much for it). The case I am using though is quite stiff so the buttons are a bit harder to press, which is a positive thing when it comes to the aforementioned assistant button, now I don't get any unintentional presses.
connectivity is great, having the headphone jack is a must for me and it works as it should. WiFi and Bluetooth are strong, I have a WiFi 5 router at home and the device will switch automatically between 4 and 5 gen signal seamless, and it will also connect to and from mobile network without issues.

- Battery life: I usually get between 6 and 7 hours of Screen on Time (SOT) and it involves video playback, browsing, gaming, fiddling around, messaging, getting calls, video calls, etc. I've read experience from others with better performance or worse, but mine seems to be the middle ground and I am quite happy. I have 120Hz enabled all the time. I do have Always On Display feature turned off, and Dark Theme enabled which helps a little bit. Standby performance is also very good, only dropping a single percentage overnight or not dropping at all. And features like Heat Suppression (prevents battery charging while gaming) and Battery Care (stops charges at 80 or 90%) are very welcomed to help maintain a healthy battery in the long run.

On the software side, it isn't free of glitches, something like when performing a split-screen sometimes the middle bar button for adjusting the size will not be shown, but relaunching a split-screen will fix it. Obviously not a deal breaker but just a minor glitch in the UI. And sometimes when a game has Heat Suppression enabled, the Game Enhancer app will keep that profile active when you go to the home screen so I have to check that "Do not disturb" or "Heat Suppression" is not active since it will prevent my device from receiving messages and charging respectively.

I hope that these minor bugs can be fixed in a software upgrade, but in the meantime is just a minor inconvenience. I would detract half a star for that... but overall this is a great phone, totally recommended.

4.5/5 stars.
