Quite honestly, I would not feel comfortable recommending this book to a 13 or 14-year-old. However, I will tell you that it mostly depends on your personal maturity level. I was kind of a black belt reader, so by the age of 10 or 11, I had pretty much devoured the entire young adult section at my local library. I began reading novels targeted at adults when I was around your age, and being twenty years old now, I don't see that it did me any harm. This book series is MUCH more chaste than the show, but there is bad language and at least one graphic sex scene per novel. Considering that you are in--what--7th/8th grade, I'm willing to bet that you have heard worse in the hallways of your school each day. And when it comes to the sex? Honestly, I have read young adult books (hello, Forever by Judy Blume), that are WAY more risque than any of Charlaine Harris's novels. In the end, it's up to you. If you have an extensive vocabulary, an enjoyment of the supernatural, and parents who don't pay too much attention to your book selections (all qualities that I possessed at the age of 13), you will probably enjoy this book. I was probably about 15 or 16 the first time that I was introduced to Charlaine Harris, so you're not that far off. My advice is to check out the first book (Dead Until Dark) from your local library, and if it is too much for you to handle, simply return it. I don't think that it will scar you for life to read a couple of bad words and a sexual situation or two.
Definitively No. And I'm liberal. This is paranormal erotica - the sex is a bit too bloody and kinky for many adults and I really wouldn't feel comfortable lending this to a 13/14 year old, no matter how mature.
I agree with most all other posters...these are definitely not for that age bracket. No.. No.. No... even a mature 14 yr old does not need to read these books. As others have said, they are not on the level of Anita Blake or J R Ward but it is still mainly adult content, it can get a little graphic with the sex and way graphic with the violence. However, I am a reader of the Sherrilyn Kenyon Dark-Hunter-verse books, while those are not for early teens she has released a teen novel called Infinity....Chronicles of Nick. It is a teen novel about one of the characters that in the adult books becomes a very pivotal character. I read it because I am a rabid Kenyon Minion ;-) and because I love the character of Nick Gautier. In these books he is around 14-15 and the first book, Infinity, is mainly about zombies and it is appropriate for a 13-14 year old to read. These are my thoughts & opinions, no more, no less and I am a mother btw so I feel you. Happy reading !
No, these books are not for young teens. There is graphic violence and sex. There are a lot of paranormal romance authors that write for young adults, and they are good reads, but his series should be considered rated R. It is an excellent series for those who are old enough! I love the stories and mystery.
Psh. I was watching decapitation videos by 13. It all depends on your personal maturity level, as S. Coleman said. Some people can handle things at an earlier age than others can. If you can handle the average horror film, action movie, or spongebob squarepants, you should be able to handle some words in a book.
