Works fine with open-source interface library under Linux

I purchased this USB temperature sensor without being certain that it would work under Linux, but I'm pleased to report that it does. I set up a udev rule to open permissions on the /dev/hidraw# device that's created, and I'm able to read the temperature using TEMPered/libtempered.

The sensor is marked with "TEMPer1" and identifies itself with vendor ID 0x0C45 and product ID 0x7401.

I purchased this item to log the temperature and time it takes to heat a container of water, to help tune a PID controller. I soon noticed the "temperature reading getting stuck" issue that other reviewers have complained about. I returned the item to the seller, who was responsive and courteous. They sent a replacement immediately. The replacement device exhibits the same problem, so this behavior appears to be a "feature" of both devices I have tested.

What seems to happen is that the device has "blind spots" in the temperature curve - small intervals of temperature that it can't "see". While the temperature is inside one of the blind spots, the device shows the value of the lower boundary of the blind spot. Once the temperature passes the upper boundary of the blind spot, the readings return to normal. The problem happens at exactly the same temperature points every time, whether the temperature is rising or falling through a blind spot (i.e. the lower boundary is always shown). The device has several blind spots of up to 1.5 degrees Celsius (3F) dotted throughout the temperature range. (Speculating here, it looks like there are inaccuracies in the A/D conversion rather than a problem with the probe or the hardware in general.)

Apart from the "blind spots", the temperature readings are generally smooth with a resolution of around 0.1 - 0.2 degrees C. Since the blind spot behavior is constant and predictable, the device is still useful for many purposes where its failings either don't matter or can be worked around (by interpolation in a spreadsheet, for example).

The software that comes with it is perfectly adequate and will reliably create a log file with times and temperatures which you can then process in a spreadsheet. You can adjust the time interval between readings, and you can apply a calibration constant to the readings.

IF your specific application can "live with" the blind spots, this item is definitely usable as a low cost temperature logger.

Soondar temperature probe: decent, cheap

I simultaneously bought one sensor with a detachable probe (this one, $20.59) and one without (Jepeak, formerly Ebest, $13.99). They're both monitoring server room temps from the same Linux box, despite the Soondar description specifying "do not support Linux." For the price I got a decent deal.

Neither one performs noticeably better or worse than the other. It boils down to whether you need the probe.

This one has a detachable probe on a cord about 3 feet long--so it can be run away from the front or rear of a server for better monitoring of the actual room temperature instead of what the exhaust is spitting out.

I read enough reviews about the included software that I barely looked at it (would've been five stars) before deciding I could do something better. After installing a couple tools I can poll the devices and a quick homebrewed shell script makes periodic measurements, rolls me rrdtool graphs, and texts me if the temperature varies too much. They aren't incredibly accurate but work consistently enough for my needs--they detected my experimental activity like moving crates, grabbing the probe, and opening the door.

Three weeks strong, I'll update if the hardware fails (or maybe when I dress up my graphs) I'll revisit this review, but for now mainly good news after a bit of elbow grease. Linux and cheap, FTW!

Several references helped me build my project, but searching "Lindqvist temper usb" will be a good start.

UPDATE, 2016 11 08: after ten months they're both still going, no issues to report. However, the Soondar (probe version) I have is no longer available on Amazon.

UPDATE, 2018 03 01: over two years and no issues. Still going...uploading a couple new images.

Very easy to use! Works great with the Raspberry Pi!

I got this for use with the Raspberry Pi, and it works great! I just searched for the model and "Raspberry Pi" and found a site that shows where to get a bit of code to compile and generate a binary (executable) that will grab the temperature! It was so easy to use, and I got something going to monitor temperatures quickly!

I have previously used the 1-Wire system, but that required a bit of wiring, and this just plugs right into the USB port and the compiled binary kicks out a nice line with the time/data/temps! Certainly the easiest way I have found to put a temperature sensor on something and log it with the Raspberry Pi! No drivers needed, just that binary!
