This is a review of the OXA CC308+ anti-spy bug and hidden camera detector. I was provided a free sample for evaluation.
I was not sure what to expect with this device. It was priced very low and when I received it, I'd have to say that the quality met the low price.
The user guide is one of the most poorly written/translated manuals I've ever seen. It's rather typical of these imported gadgets. Very disappointing to me that these companies can't hire a competent translator to produce a useable user guide.
This has the capability to detect RF energy and alerts you to RF by a row of LED's and accompanying tone that sounds in their presence and proximity. There is also an circular array of LED's that flash. In conjunction with a view port which you look through, you are supposed to be able to detect pin-hole spy cameras that may be hidden in a room.
On one side is a sliding switch that has three modes: Off, sound, vibration. Operating in the sound mode results in beeps if RF is detected. In Vibration mode, no sound is generated, only a vibration. You can also use the provided earbuds to keep it in sound mode, yet mute the speaker. A rotary dial lets you crudely adjust the sensitivity of the RF function.
Basically you just calibrate the device in a known, relatively RF free area. Slowly adjust the sensitivity until you get a beep and/or one of the LED's light up. Then back it down just a hair. Enter the room you want to scan and slowly walk around the room holding the device in front of you. As you approach a "bug" that might be emitting RF energy, you should get an indication.
This is highly prone to false activtions that can be caused by a router in the vicinity, a cell phone and numerous other possible causes.
As for the spy-camera detection, you push a button labeled "Laser" which is a misnomer. There is no laser but rather 6 LED's arranged in a circle. There is also a dime-sized hole with a red filter in it that you are to look through as you activate the "laser". As you slowly scan around the room, if you are pointing towards a pin-hole camera embedded in something, you will see a bright red dot as a reflection of the "lasers" hit the lens of that camera.
It's a pretty cheesy, cheap device that actually works to a certain extent. But it's not very high quality and the RF discovery is hit or miss and not all that accurate.
This is a really slick device for $13 dollars. I'm buying a few more for work.
To hunt for hidden cameras, you look through the view port, hit the button, and then a circular array of strobes flash in the direction you are looking. The distinctive curve of a camera lens reflects that strobe array in a dramatic fashion: the person looking through the view port cannot HELP but notice the flash. This works whether the camera is off or on: if the lens is exposed, and you are pointed at it, you will definitely see it - no matter how small or well hidden. If it can see you, well... you get the picture.
I tested this against cell phone cameras and web cams - they have quite small optics. I am confident that it could be used (with a little diligence and maybe some manic paranoia - it is a manual process, after all) - to sweep a room of any hidden cameras with a high degree of certainty. I think this product would make a great stocking stuffer: you can cheaply and easily grant some peace of mind to anyone who may be concerned about toilet / shower cams, public changing rooms, secret NSA surveillance programs, etc. On that last one you might also want to consider getting them some professional help, but this of course is much cheaper. :-)
