James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano in a not-so-nice mood For the first time, The Sopranos rubbed out The West Wing to take home its first Emmy® for Outstanding Dramatic Series. Michael Imperioli and Drea de Matteo also earned Best Supporting Actor and Actress honors for some of their finest hours as Christopher and Adriana. From the moment a wayward bear lumbers into the Sopranos' yard in the season opener, it is clear that The Sopranos is in anything but a "stagmire." The series benefits from an infusion of new blood, the so-called "Class of 2004," imprisoned "family" members freshly released from jail. Most notable among these is Tony's cousin, Tony Blundetto (Steve Buscemi, who directed the pivotal season three episode "Pine Barrens"! ), who initially wants to go straight, but proves himself to be something of a "free agent," setting up a climactic stand-off between Tony and New York boss Johnny Sack.

Carmela and Tony These 13 mostly riveting episodes unfold with a page-turning intensity with many rich subplots. Estranged couple Tony and Carmela (the incomparable James Gandolfini and Edie Falco) work toward a reconciliation (greased by Tony's purchase of a $600,000 piece of property for Carmela to develop). The Feds lean harder on an increasingly stressed-out and distraught Adriana to "snitch" with inevitable results. This season's hot-button episode is "The Test Dream," in which Tony is visited by some of the series' dear, and not-so-dearly, departed in a harrowing nightmare. With this set, fans can enjoy marathon viewings of an especially satisfying season, but considering the long wait ahead for season six, best to take Tony's advice to his son, who, at one point, gulps down a champagne toast. Season 5 continues the high level production of the Soprano series. Hard to imagine how they could keep up the fascinating story lines, acting, and atmosphere after 4 years of the series. Steve Buscemi arrives on the scene as Tony Soprano's cousin, Tony Blundetto, recently released after 15 years in prison. His screen presence adds a lot to the drama as we follow his path from the straight life back to the business he was so familiar with before going to the big house (He also directed episode 7). Episode 11, "The Test Dream", written by series creator David Chase and supervising producer Matthew Weiner, is one of my all time Sopranos favorites, with a dramatic accident with Tony's goomar, Valentina, a mob hit on a newly released associate, Angelo Garepe, the vengeance of Tony B., and a surreal twenty minute Tony Soprano dream sequence while camped out at the Plaza Hotel.
Season 5 guest characters include "Feetch" La Mana, Finn De Trolio, Fran Felstein (Polly Bergen), J.T. Dolan (Tim Daly), and Annette Benning. Explosive and exquisite!

Dr. Jennifer Melfi quotes Yeats to Tony: "The center cannot hold." Although Tony doesn't get the reference, it stands as an epigraph to Season Five and to Tony's character in general. The tensions that make Tony a lovable psychopath also, in Season Five, threaten to rip him apart: most importantly, his genuine affection for and desire to protect his family come into conflict with his duties as a crime boss.

A variety of insights emerge as various characters attempt to come to grips with who Tony really is. Silvio: his besetting sin is pride; Paulie: he is a old-style general worthy of respect and admiration; Carmela: his vulnerability makes him worth loving; Dr. Melfi: he retreats from accepting responsibility to the cocoon of sentimentality. A brilliant dream sequence at the center of the series -- a kind of epiphany of Tony -- dramatizes all these features of his character.

This is Tony's season, where we witness his fumbling attempts to take responsibility for his messes at the same time that we observe how easily he is tempted into rage and denial. Deeply complex, the script provides the perfect vehicle for the monumental talent of James Gandolfino. I personally prefer Season Four because it makes more space for the world of the Soprano women, but, in its anatomy of Tony himself, nothing beats Season Five.

The 5th season of The Sopranos may be the best season, based solely on Steve Buscemi's presence. The show hits its stride towards the end of the 1st season and pretty well carries this through the 3rd season (2nd being the best out of those). The 4th kind of slows down and focuses on Tony and Carmela's relationship. Then the 5th season comes along and gets us right back where The Sopranos belong ... integrating new characters seemlessly and surprising us with incredibly normal plots that have the perfect amount of twist to them.

To me, more shows [and movies] should stick to the 'day in the life' formula rather than some convoluted plot with myriads of twisted sub-plots that lead to some hackneyed climatic conclusion. Aside from the 4th the season, The Sopranos entertains us with the everyday life of these NJ mafia greaseballs. The dialogue, clothing and consistent character portrayals makes this great. Throw Steve Buscemi in the mix and you get the eye-popping performance of one of Hollywood's best actors in an already classick mob tale.

Great show, I never had a chance to watch it when it was on TV and now I'm binge watching all 6 seasons.
If you look at dr. Melfi's office then you have seen the inside window sill under the window behind her, it's curved, as is the right corner of the office to her left. Her office looks more like a semicircle sticking out from the hallway more than anything else, so the windows on Tony's right wouldn't be a mistake. Great acting and great stories but, like anything from Hollywood for the last few Generations, a lot of unnecessary sex and a lot of purposeful Catholic bashing and Christian bashing. They don't even know how to make it subtle.

I've never seen a Sopranos season I DIDNT like. I loved Season 4 too, personally don't understand the concept of "spent too much time on problems from the homefront". Just like in real life, some problems take up more of your time and then later they take a backburner.

This season the tensions in the New York families and in the Adrianna-snitching situation come to a climax. Tony and Carmella come to a reconciliation agreement,,which most viewers will know Tony enough to know that he probably had his fingers crossed behind his back during. Anthony Jr is his usual snotrag-teenager self throughout the whole season (he's really my least favorite character) and Steve Buscemi has a meaty role in this season.

Once again, especially with Tony and Christopher, one of the best aspects of the storytelling is how they show us the characters very real and very bad flaws while still showing that they have their human side as well.

Yeah, I know, I heard that most fans were upset with the last episode of this final year...but I found it to be delicious! **SPOILER ALERT** We all knew there would be death in the cards for some of the family, and even though Christopher ran the gamut from heartbreakingly sensitive to heartless killer, he was so wonderfully played by Michael Imperioli that his final moments were gut-wrenching. This has to be one of the best casts ever assembled for a series...from the master himself James Gandolfini and the wonderful Edie Falco to the smallest bit parts the actors gave their all. You care for the family/families because of the superb acting, writing, directing, editing, lighting, music, sets..I could go on and on! As for the final scene in the final episode, I thought it was genius!
