OK, Since writing that I realized the reason for the change of spacing. Many of the negative reviews of these racks center on the fact that the cutouts for the bottom end of the bottle did not leave enough room to permit six Burgundy shape bottle to fit properly. Bordeaux shapes were generally OK. After my struggle and frustration over the fact that the cutout spacings for the side pieces have been changed in the newer sets I realized that this was done in order to solve that Burgundy bottle problem. It's remains true the new ones won't fit properly over the old ones, but if you are starting from scratch with newly order sets that should not be a problem. THAT'S ALL TO THE GOO BECAUSE THE RACKS ARE BAS9ICALLY SOLID AND HOLD BOTTLES SECURELY.
Con: several of the end pieces had holes cut to small to fit into the adjoining piece. The smaller ones, I used a file to take the wood down to an appropriate depth. Others, I used a hammer to force the pieces together. Some modification was needed for 3 out of the 4 side joiners I used.
I like this wine rack, it fulfills my needs. However, I would not have been able to assemble without both a wood file and a hammer.
++The racks were super easy to assemble, no tools necessary. It’s just like “Lincoln Logs.”
The biggest minus...
— I ordered a 3-tier. I got 2 front pieces and 4 back pieces. Since I didn’t bother asking for a replacement, I have to set one whole row in gingerly so they won’t fall off the rack. My own fault to be sure, but that probably means so poor customer got 4 front racks and couldn’t put bottles in at all.
