About the Author

A veteran novelist, James Byron Huggins' life story reads more like fiction than fact. After working as a newspaper reporter, Huggins left journalism to help persecuted Christians in eastern Europe. From Texas, he worked with the Christian underground in the Iron Curtain, spending his life savings and becoming homeless. Huggins left America to offer assistance to Romanian Christians. He often remained hidden for days at a time in order to survive. After returning home, Huggins again worked as a journalist before becoming a policeman. Huggins then left law enforcement to pursue full–time writing.

This man, James Byron Huggins writes intense suspense with a strong inspirational underpinning. In this book there were so many things said that blessed me and enlightened the eyes of my understanding. Here's just one sample: "If it could confuse me long enough, it could make me afraid and redirect my thoughts, then it would have me. And so I rose up and focused my mind only on what God has written. His words are our greatest defense. Then I prayed and fasted and in the end it departed." The truth that is written in this novel and his others are such a blessing.

This book, as all of his are, is extremely well-written. It is a mysterious book but also exciting and a little scary at times. The characters are great, and the way that the "sorcerer" relates to the Bible and is used in this book is exceptionally clever.

Like many of Huggin's other books, "Sorcerer" is a fast paced action read with a Christian twist, but I think Huggin's true gift lies in giving the reader a non-preachy insight into the nature and forms of faith within the framework of an exciting pace.

His characters are believable as people and in their various approaches to God. Thorn, the hero, is a man who's never given faith much thought until confronted with supernatural evil. During his battles with the sorcerer Jannes, we see the quiet faith of his wife, Rebecca, the faith in action approach of the Assassini Artemis, the more traditional expressions of faith of Father Trevor, and the intellectual approach to faith of Professor Adler. Working together, the expressions of faith provide a united front against unimaginable evil.

In all of his books, Huggin's understanding of the nature of evil is revealing and thought provoking. Evil's manipulation of the ordinary, the mundane, the people next door....classic fiction mirroring life.

"Sorcerer" works on a lot of levels. I highly recommend it.

I have read every one on Huggins books and normally enjoy them. If I had read this book first, I would have never read another one of his. I normally do not read modern Christian fiction because it is of low quality and/or gives a very dumbed down version of Christanity. The writing and the premise was not bad, but how it was carried out was very annoying and I had echoes of Frank Peretti's cheap version of Christanity dancing through my head. I would recomend that you skip this book, but if you're like me, you'll probably read it anyway then regret it.
