Freaking unbelievable! This dynamic duo broke the mold, hid the pieces, then remade it in titanium. If you're looking for one non-stop, action packed, fast paced, hard hitting, pulse racing, page flipping bombshell that grips you so tightly on a razors edge catapulting this baby to life spectacularly. Congratulations my friends you've struck the motherload. One totally engaging, mesmerizing, enthralling wonder that captures your attention from start to finish. Jacq Cunningham is an aspiring stuntwoman in Hollywood, weary of magic ever since her sister Cass disappeared two years ago. And after going so long with no leads, she sees the race as her way to get her back home, safe and sound. But there’s a lot she wasn’t expecting. I like Jacq; she’s determined, to the point of being reckless (you have to in order to be a stuntwoman), yet snarky at the same time. She’s wiling to help others and has a sense of right and wrong as the story continues. I love the interactions she has with the other characters, all varied and got me a sense of who each of them were. I really like the interactions she has with Ben and Orin the most. Without giving away too much, some of the characters and interactions really surprised me, and at the same time, were exactly as I expected, and each has some depth, but it’s clear that we haven’t seen the full depths of these characters quite yet, but it’s good for the first installment.
The plot is very fast paced, going from concept of the show, to auditions and then the race itself, covering the first of three ‘Trials’. The setting of both Earth and Faerwild is vivid, and the magic has some defined rules set to it, which I like. You get the feeling that you’re witnessing a deadly TV competition (much like The Hunger Games, Battle Royale, etc) in a magical land, and there’s plenty of twists that keep you on your toes. And the race isn’t the only thing going on in terms of the plot. There’s one twist that really got me good the first time I read it, and still was a gut punch. As a bit of a warning, there is a bit of a cliffhanger ending to this one.
Another great read from Luana and Armitage and I highly recommend it for those into deadly reality TV in a fantasy setting!
Jacq is a gopher who dreams of becoming a stunt woman. She moved to LA after her sister disappeared a few years prior to the story taking place. Her boss is looking for his big hit and ticket to the big leagues in Hollywood comes up with an idea for a race with teams of fae and humans. So maybe a bit of a deadly version of The Amazing Race here as well. Jacq wasn’t supposed to be part of the show though she desperately wanted to, but when she saves a potential contestant from near death she’s in. Partnered with Orin a grumpy yet alluring fae (think ultimate bad boy looks with a heart of gold). Together they must pass the trials to win the ultimate prize a boon from the fae king.
Magic, mystery and treachery abound in this captivating tale. Pick up your copy you won’t regret it!
I received an ARC from the author. I voluntarily review this book. This is my honest review.
I still don't know whether I like the main character. She is a midwestern girl who wants to be, not the star, but the action stand-in. My only surprise was that Jacq is not a true survivalist; she cannot hunt. No biggie, Jacq is a scrappy can-do person who noses her way into a Race in Fae in order to save her sister, assuming she can find her.
What I really like is that the supporting characters are all well-developed and interesting in their own rights, that the back-biting is true to the genre, and that the obstacle course itself is wildly creative. The romance partner is not immediately thrust in my face on page 1, so I was pleased that I was kept guessing.
Maybe I need to "accidentally click" on the next book?

I'm deffo going straight onto the next book, can't wait to see what else happens as they love to keep me guessing 😁👍
NOTE: it isn't really a cliff hanger ending, but it isn't a completed ending either. Thankfully the series is complete after the third book.
