What in tha Dark Read kind of book, did I just read?? Well let me just tell you!!
It was fan-tastic!
It was Crazy Wrong!
It was Crazy Good!
It was Crazy Twisted!
It was one of those books that I just wanted to start over and read again, cuz it was that freaking good!!
I have never read one of Nikki Sloane's books before and OMG, before I even finished reading Sordid, I went to Facebook to stalk her. I came on Goodreads to check out her other books, I want to read more of her books!! I love her writing style and how she keeps you reading on into the night. I even woke up at 3 A.M. and read for an hour cuz I just couldn't get enough. I read this book in less then 24 hours..sooo GOOD!!
This book is about Addison, she is a college student studying for a medical degree. She really did not have a social life, she wasn't homely but incredibly average.
On Halloween night, she decided to dress up in something way out of her comfort zone and go with her roommate and her BF to a frat house party. That's when she ran into a guy named Luka. She had not seen Luka in two years and all those old feelings of studying him when she should have been studying the whiteboard came crashing back. She really didn't know him and him her, but she lusted over this boy years ago.
It took me years to find the courage to speak to Luka. He seemed exactly like me. Intelligent. Focused. Serious.
But he’s not the man I imagined.
His reality is cruel and dark. He traps me in his web, his power twisting tighter the more I struggle, until it’s hopeless. I can’t break free.
As he drags me unwillingly into his filthy world, I can’t ignore the terrifying idea circling my mind. What if I belong here with him?
There is an Author's Note in the beginning of the book stating that this is not her typical type of book to write, but she had to get this book out of her head...These characters would not shut up in her brain..lol And I am sooo excited that I got to read this book by her!! I'm soo excited that she wrote this book and it was my first book that introduced me to her!!
Please also be aware that there are situations in this book that may be triggers and scenes which may make some readers uncomfortable.
I gave this book 5 Shining Stars!!! This is one of those books that I would love to give more stars to...Goodness...It was Amazing!!! Thank you for writing this book Nikki Sloane-Cheers to you and ur crazzzy..dark...mind!! : )
** spoiler alert ** 3.25-3.5 stars. This is a tough one for me to rate. I am a fan of Nikki Sloane. She is a good writer and I really loved her Blindfold series. This book was her first dark romance book and I do look dark romance. There were a few things that I liked and a few things that didn't work for me, but not because they were too dark, for other reasons.
This was the story of Addison and Luka. Addison is a pre-med student. She is innocent, smart and sweet, very girl next door, a hard worker without a lot of close friends. Luka was her TA a few years ago and she had a crush on him, but they never actually spoke. Until one night, she is dragged to a frat party with her roommate where she sees Luka and they hang out. Luka is creepy/mysterious from the get-go. You can tell something bad is going to happen. Luka gives Addison shots and takes her to a private room at the party, where he keeps her from leaving and eventually rapes her. Addison is scared and tries to leave, but he roofees her and takes her to his home where he keeps her captive. Luka knows he has made a mistake by raping her, but the only way he sees to correct it is by keeping her captive so she can not tell anyone. He uses brainwashing techniques to make her trust him and they actually do work. Luka's family is in the mob and once his father finds out about Addison, he wants to kill her. But Luka really does like Addison. He has liked her since he was her TA and he doesn't want her killed. So in order to protect her, he keeps her captive until they really do begin to fall for each other. Eventually, when they are in love, he lets her go and they continue their relationship (willingly).
Triggers- There is a detailed date rape scene. And I have read other reviewers say the didn't feel like it was rape, but, in my opinion, it really was. The thing that made it rape, in my opinion, is not just that she told him to stop and he coerced her into just the tip, and kept going because it felt good (to him). It wasn't like they were having a normal night, flirting, chatting, kissing, which led to them both wanting to have sex, but her being scared. It was that Addison was drunk and Luka manipulated her and made it so she was unable to leave the room at the party. Addison was a virgin and she had absolutely no plan on having sex with Luka (or anyone). She would not have just gotten carried away and done it. She would have dated a person for months before she gave it up. Luka planned on having sex with her and would not have taken no for an answer. It was going to happen for him no matter what. So it wasn't like they just got carried away. I definitely felt like it was premeditated on Luka's part once he saw her at the party, but he wasn't thinking about the consequences until it was over and he freaked out. Addison calls it rape throughout the book, even once she and Luka are in a real relationship. She told him no repeatedly. But she was able to forgive him though, because he was truly sorry.
I was able to get over the rape part. It was brutal and realistic but that is not why I didn't love the book. The main reason why I didn't totally-over-the-top love this book was that, in the beginning of the book through about the middle of the book, Luka seems crazy. He acts totally unhinged. The way he runs hot and cold, from caring to a blank face. It seems totally psychotic. Which doesn't fit with the way he acts in the rest of the book and with his reasoning for keeping Addison hostage. As the book goes on, it becomes clear that he is keeping Addison hostage because he is afraid that she will tell that he raped her. And that he is afraid that his father, uncle and their mafia ties, would decide that Addison was not a risk and complication they wanted and that they would kill her. But it also becomes clear that he loves her and that they have found a real connection, despite how their relationship began. Once they start to fall in love, Luka seems normal. They begin a real relationship and it is easy to see how they can have a normal future together. So I liked Luka at this point and I liked Luka and Addison together. He just didn't seem like the same person from the beginning of the book. I don't really understand how he went from insane to normal.
I did like the place where Luka and Addison ended up. I felt like they really did love each other and I was happy with the way their happy ever after turned out. I liked both of their characters by the end of the book. I did feel like their relationship progression was realistic. The story was interesting and different. This book was banned by Amazon for being too dark, which I think was silly, because I have read much darker books. I still love Nikki Sloane's books and I look forward to more from her in the future!
4.25 stars. This was a really book! This is Oksana and Vasilije's story. Vasijile is Luka (from Sordid)'s brother. He is involved in the family business/Serbian mafia run by his Uncle Goran. Vasilije is not happy with a lot going on in the business, including the sex trade, but he is biding his time until he can takeover for his uncle. On a job for Goran, he meets Oksana, who is one of the girls being traded. Oksana is the daughter of a Russian mobster and has big secrets of her own. (view spoiler) Her beauty catches Vasilije's eye and he decides to keep her for himself. She goes home with him and they begin a sexy relationship. Oksana is on a quest for revenge against people from her past. She must decide if she can trust Vasilije to help her get revenge. They find they have a lot in common on the revenge seeking front and together they can accomplish their plans. And they fall in love along the way.
I loved Vasilije and Oksana. For living in a crazy mafia world and suffering through some terrible situations, they were both surprisingly normal. Vasilije was in a lot of ways just a regular guy. Oksana was strong and brave. I loved them together. They had a great connection and chemistry. They were perfect for each other. And super sexy too. Overall, I didn't think this book was as dark as Sordid or as dark as I was expecting. But I liked that. I liked catching up with Luka and Addison. There was even a mention of the Blindfold club.
Overall, I really enjoyed seeing Vasilije and Oksana's relationship develop. This was a great sexy, suspenseful mafia romance! I can't wait for more from Ms. Sloane!
