What do you get when you combine a suicidal daughter, a dying mother and a doctor with a dark, sordid past? You get a great book! If you are sensitive to reading about mental illness, rape, suicide or murder this book is not for you. However, the dark and disturbing nature of this book is what makes it so exciting.
Nikki has a dark secret which has caused her to become a medicated, anti-social, suicidal pain addict. Her wealthy, work-alcoholic mother is dying and wants to make sure Nikki is taken care of after she’s gone. Nikki’s mother arranges an “accidental” meeting between Nikki and a mysterious Dr. Eric Brenton, who also has a dark secret.
After her mother’s death, Eric vows to take care of Nikki in his own way. He introduces her to his world of pain and control. He shows her that he is the only medication that she will ever need. Nikki finds a new addiction in Eric. Eric seems to be the perfect man for Nikki but his past keeps springing up and causing trouble. It seems his past lovers also have an addiction….Eric. They will do whatever it takes to keep his attentions away from Nikki. Nikki has her own problems with her family trying to get a piece of the fortune her mother left her.
This is not your typical “everybody falls in love and lives happily ever after” kind of novel. I couldn’t put this book down. I couldn’t wait to find out what happened next! What is going to happen to Nikki? How far is Eric willing to go to keep Nikki under his control? What will happen to Eric’s past lovers? There is only one way to find out…READ THE BOOK!

So here is the freaking deal... to put it simple... this book is hella insane okay... INSANE. Please allow me to explain...

So I found myself going through two different emotions "shocked and confused" and I started to wonder like I am sure everyone else did... "who is really the insane one". Yes please note that until about the 75% mark... I started to think ( I am trying to keep this spoiler free) hmmm maybe this one is overreacting... or maybe this one is really freaking insane... however I did not allow myself to try to guess with this book because it seemed like I was being tossed in every direction and I did not want to expect one thing and the outcome be completely different so I allow the book to take it's course... and of course... S*** started hitting the freaking fan.

Now being that there is a second book that I am itching to get my hands on and start reading I am going to cut this review short and leave by saying... this is a sordid mess.

Signing off.. Questioning my mental health because... I enjoyed Eric's character

Wow! That was an intense read. I think I loved it. I’m not sure if I actually know what I think I know or not. Confused? So am I. But it’s a good confused. The Sordid Promise is not your typical romance. Heck, the author even tells you that, and warns you that it’s not a happy story. She even hints that it’s not a romance, but I have to disagree – it is the love story of two dark and broken people. Because the book is a psychological thriller, it will not be an easy read for many people. There were several times while I was reading that I thought I knew what was coming, but then the Ms. Lane would take the story off in an entirely different direction. I enjoy reading a book that does the unpredictable and keeps me thinking and engaged – The Sordid Promise does this very well.

This is the kind of book that is very hard to review because as you read it and secrets are revealed, you forget when you learned them and whose version of the truth was revealed first. This is a psychological thriller, not in the mystery/who-done/it sense, but rather in that there are just so many secrets being kept, so I was constantly wondering if what I knew was the truth or not. As the reader, I rarely had the “inside scoop” and I think this is why it made it so easy for me to connect with Nikki – I felt her confusion and frustration. This of course only seemed to heighten the feelings of anxiety and attraction she felt toward Eric. The “moth to the flame” feeling was so palpable while reading that I couldn’t wait for her to get burned because the level of sexual tension between Eric and Nikki was unreal. Suffice it to say, Ms. Lane can write sex scenes – the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Ms.

First of all I am a character driven reader, story line is always secondary. I totally loathed these characters. There was not ONE(well possibly the dog) that I connected with. The main characters of Nikki & Eric/Ethan, those two people were so UNENDEARING that I felt nothing. Normally it's a like, hate or indifference toward a character, but the people in this book left me feeling empty, I couldn't care less about them. The entire storyline was odd to me and extremely confusing at times, even the sex wasn't hot because I had no connection with the characters. I have read lots of DARK, DISTURBING, GRITTY romances that I loved, however this was left me feeling disconnected.
