So I found myself going through two different emotions "shocked and confused" and I started to wonder like I am sure everyone else did... "who is really the insane one". Yes please note that until about the 75% mark... I started to think ( I am trying to keep this spoiler free) hmmm maybe this one is overreacting... or maybe this one is really freaking insane... however I did not allow myself to try to guess with this book because it seemed like I was being tossed in every direction and I did not want to expect one thing and the outcome be completely different so I allow the book to take it's course... and of course... S*** started hitting the freaking fan.
Now being that there is a second book that I am itching to get my hands on and start reading I am going to cut this review short and leave by saying... this is a sordid mess.
Signing off.. Questioning my mental health because... I enjoyed Eric's character
What can I say other than I am still a big fan of Courtney Lane! I love her books and this book is no exception.
If you like/love Dark reads then you need to read this book. I will let you read the Synopsis yourself and know that Nikki is messed up. She really does have some issues that make her like she is. Eric is also very messed up so this makes for a “messed up” twisted story.
Courtney does know how to write a story that will just draw you in and doesn’t let you go until you reach “the end” and then she still messes with you because d*mn I found myself not able to stop at the end and thankfully I had the ARC for The Starkest Truth ready to read!
I loved this book and series and even though you can read this as a standalone as stated who would want to when there is so much more.
This book The Sordid Promise was not an ARC. I bought it and it was oh so worth it!
But I didn't know what to expect from the novel. It seemed like some weird, creepy doctor thing but like a parody.
But I was wrong and I really enjoyed The Sordid Promise.
The Sordid Promise revolves around Diouana (Nikki) who moves back to Upstate New York to be with her mother who is dying of cancer.
She meets her new neighbor Eric Brenton who seems like he has everything, good looks, women on his arm and a doctor. But he has his sights set on Nikki and he will do anything he can to have her. Even when his very dark and easily kept past is haunting him and Nikki.
While Nikki is having dark thoughts again, they try and navigate through their tense relationship with Nikki very focused on her mother.
Before I get into my review, I love the fact that Nikki is African-American. This isn't clearly stated, but then again it shouldn't have to be.
But besides that, this book is dark and very physiologically mixed up. I did not know who to trust, and not even Nikki. Only because when Nikki was presented with certain information, she wouldn't react in the way I thought she would or the way I would.
That goes with her already be broken and dark in her own right and just needed someone after her mother. Even when Eric was doing and saying shady things, I in my head was like,
It seemingly seems like all of Eric's friends and acquaintances have something they know about Eric that is very vital for Nikki to know, but tease her answers to have her run away but never tell her anything.
And Nikki was just like,
The Sordid Promise has dark themes; suicidal thoughts and actions as well as of course graphic sex as well as rough sex which I believe is consented but seemed dubious to me.
If you are fine with all of that and want another dark novel to add to your collection, read away.
