Things that make it special
-looks great on the stove. Wife was impressed.
-Mirror finish is much better looking than picture.
-Very high quality thin and real stainless steel. Not the China grade material that typically rusts.
-Handle folds down to the side for easy storage in your cabinets
-Controlled poor with colander like plate at base of inner spout. No dripping. No overfilling/splashing.
-Wide lid for easy cleaning of the inside. You can also look at bubble size for temp control for lower temp green teas and whatnot.
-No whistle. I wake up before my wife and do not need entire house to know when my water is boiling. Very easy to tell when it is boiling without a whistle that has the side affect of producing a half awake but fully enraged wife.
-Made in Japan not China. I am not being slowly poisoned by sub grade materials and leaded weld solder.
-Base has 7 inch Diameter which fits my 15KBTU/H oversize burner. Water boils in 7 minutes for me.
-Lid has 5 inch diameter which makes for easy cleaning
-With handle folded down (awesome feature) and lid removed it is 3.5 inches tall for easy storage
Others reviewers mentioned the lid leaking when pouring. Lid is a good fit and rests with gravity. The only way I could replicate the problem is by way overfilling the kettle and or pouring at an extreme angle (Hint-spout pours from bottom so you do not need to pour an extreme angle, Ever!). I would not worry about it, the complaint is unfounded.
This kettle is the single exception that I have found. It is elegant in its design, simple and functional, solid in construction. It boils water quickly and without any unfortunate side effects. It pours. It boils. It pours. It boils. It may continue doing this long after I am dead. It does not melt, rust, crack, warp or explode. It is also nice enough looking that my wife will let me leave it on the stove all the time.
Revision Added Mid-2015: Sadly, from reading the reviews, it appears that they downgraded their quality standard in early to mid 2014, and I have to revise my review, to "Didn't Suck; might suck now".
Revision Added 2017: From recent reviews it looks like they have picked up their game and are back to making good kettles.
It is made in Japan, not China.
The material and construction are both very high quality, the weld were the spout attached to body looks very robust.
The top fits very loose which some people may consider is not good, but it makes it very easy to remove and absolutely does not fall off when pouring the water.
The opening is very large which makes it very easy to fill and clean.
The handle pivots to one side which also helps with cleaning the inside, Even though the handle can easily swivel it is not a problem when pouring and is very stable.
The first couple of times I used it I put it on the large burner on my stove and with heat at high the handle was too hot to hold without using a pot holder. But I found if I turned the heat down some so that the flames do not reach the sides of the pot I could hold the handle with my bare hands and the water still heated very quickly, more quickly than other kettles I have had.
Some people have complained about rust with this kettle. I have only had a short time, but I think what some people are calling rust may be stains from making tea in the pot which I do not do. It is also possible they have very bad water. Being that this kettle is made in Japan and the stainless steel appears to be high quality if I feel confident that it will not rust.
This kettle does not have a whistle and I had to get my wife to get past that. The only purpose of a whistle is to let you know the water is boiling if you are not watching it. This kettle heats up very quickly so I usually just hang around the kitchen until it is ready. Whistles have many downsides, sometimes I am in another place and don't want to immediately turn off the stove and the whistle keeps on blasting which is annoying. Many people complain about whistles that melt and quit working. An extra mechanism is needed to flip the whistle out of the way which is another thing that can break. So lets all repeat after me "I don't need a whistle on my tea kettle"
This kettle pours very smoothly, all the water goes into the tea cup.
Seriously, don't waste your time and money with fancy or busy looking kettles. This is really simple looking, but it's extremely practical. There are two holes on the side of the lid, which allow the pot to whistle when boiling. I think this will last you for a long time if you treat it with respect. My goal will be to to own it for the rest of my life and pass it on.
