The Sorrows, an island off the coast of northern California, and its castle have been uninhabited since a series of gruesome murders in 1925. But its owner needs money, so he allows film composers Ben and Eddie and a couple of their female friends to stay a month in Castle Blackwood. Eddie is certain a haunted castle is just the setting Ben needs to find inspiration for a horror film.
But what they find is more horrific than any movie. Something is waiting for them in the castle. A malevolent being has been trapped for nearly a century. And he’s ready to feed.

Review
"This is a sure fire winner and one that shows the road that Janz will go down with his career. About the Author
Since then Jonathan's work has been lauded by writers like Jack Ketchum, Edward Lee, Tim Waggoner, Bryan Smith, and Ronald Kelly. Novels like The Nightmare Girl, Wolf Land, Savage Species, and Dust Devils prompted Thunderstorm Books to sign Jonathan to an eleven-book deal and to give him his own imprint, Jonathan Janz's Shadow Side.
His novel Children of the Dark received a starred review in Booklist and was chosen by their board as one of the Top Ten Horror Books of the Year (August 2015-September 2016). Children of the Dark will soon be translated into German and has been championed by the Library Journal, the School Library Journal, and Cemetery Dance. In early 2017, his novel Exorcist Falls was released to critical acclaim.
Jonathan's primary interests are his wonderful wife and his three amazing children, and though he realizes that every author's wife and children are wonderful and amazing, in this case the cliché happens to be true. You can learn more about Janz at www.jonathanjanz.com.

Ben and Eddie are composers who specialize in film scores. They’ve just been hired to score a major new horror movie, but Ben has writer’s block. Eddie thinks that spending some time in a castle on an island off the coast of Northern California will help Ben get his groove back. But no one has lived there since a bunch of people were killed there in the 20’s. Only one way on or off the island...what could possibly go wrong? Horror, gore, and more ensue!
I found this to be a very quick read. The chapters are short which kept me speeding along until the end. Once things hit the fan, they don’t let up and that propelled me through to the conclusion- I think I read the final third on one sitting. Every several chapters, there are journal entries from someone who used to live in the island that provide some context as to why the castle isn’t necessarily where you’d want spend a month completely cut off from the world; these were my favorite part because I really wanted to know more about what haunted the castle and why.
There are a lot more characters then the two I mentioned earlier- both on and off the island, and in the past revealed through the journal entries. While I felt like characters were a little thin, I did find myself invested in the more likable ones. The unlikable ones were extremely unlikable; no redemption in sight for most of them, no middle ground. And at least one truly vile one that you hope terrible things happen to, but I’m not telling.
My only gripe is that I wish we got to find out a little more about the entity and the island’s multiple mysteries (trying to avoid spoilers) as I still had questions in the end; there’s a sequel called CASTLE OF SORROWS and maybe we find out more there. It feels like there’s more to this island and I will definitely be scheduling a return trip!
The things I did like about this story more than offset the few issues I had with it. One of the major plusses going for The Sorrows is that it is NOT your same-old, same-old - and that is such a hard thing to be or do these days, especially in the horror genre. I will not give away any of the storyline or details; suffice it to say that The Sorrows is more original than derivative (IMHO), and I liked that it managed to be different much of the time even where it wasn't "new."
Though I wasn't really ever frightened out of my wits at any point, I WAS certainly disturbed, and there were a fair number of times I cringed. (To be fair, it's been a very long time since a horror book has truly scared me [vs. just disgusted or startled me momentarily] - but I keep searching....)
A few things did bother me a little: for instance, the storyline seemed a tad choppy in a few spots, and parts of the book's basic premise (resting as it does in the realm of myth or fantasy) might be bit hard to swallow for some. On the other hand, it's one of the devices that makes this book different from a lot of others.
Finally, if you like clear-cut and/or definitively happy endings, this isn't the book for you. But even having said that, I do wish we had a bit more in the way of an explanation for the origin of the island's indigenous, uh, inhabitant(s). However, books and movies in this genre that answer all or most of the questions that the story raises have not been in vogue for a very long time and so are quite rare. Some things just..."are" - we don't always get to learn why.
Weighing all the pros & cons, I'd give The Sorrows a solid B+.
I was surprised to realize I had not read this when first published; but as I had acquired the sequel, CASTLE OF SORROWS, to review, I wanted to read this one first. I'm so thankful I did, because I spent two days in the incredible, fabulist, fantastical, reality conceived by outstanding author Jonathan Janz. (I'm using fabulist in the sense of fable; fantastical in the sense of fantasy.) Mr. Janz can stand toe-to-toe in the realm of extreme horror with another favorite author, Edward Lee. Both can pen the most gruesome, gory, graphic, pain, suffering, torture; and explicit sensuality including rape-murder; and yet the writing is so excellent, the characters so intricately defined, that even while the reader cringes, gasps, and tries to turn away, still we are held fast to the page.
If you've read Mr. Janz' THE CLEARING OF TRAVIS COBLE, you know how his stories insinuate themselves into the deepest recesses of your mind and make themselves at home. So grab yourself a cast-iron stomach and blinders, and prepare yourself for the ride of your life, to an unforgettable experience on an isolated island eighty miles from the California coast: welcome to THE SORROWS.
